“Mom?” Luke called as Reid helped him down the stairs.

“Not so fast, Luke.” Reid cautioned. “If you rip your stitches open again, we’ll have to turn around and go back upstairs.”

“Luke?” Noah appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

“Noah.” Luke gasped, holding his side and moving as fast as he dared. . “Where’s my Mom?”

“She and Holden went back to the police station.” Noah answered. “They were worried that Damian would try to escape custody or something, and they wanted to be there in case Margo got any word on Rose.”

“I know where they are.” Luke managed as Reid helped him down the last couple of steps.

“Where? How did you figure it out?”

“Zac would go somewhere that reminds him of Zoe.” Luke answered. “The police are watching all the ways he could use to get out of town, including roadblocks.”

“So you think he’s laying low until he can leave town?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Where else?”

“The storage locker.” Luke and Noah said together.

Getting Reid on board with the idea of checking out the storage locker took longer than Luke would have liked. Reid finally came around, insisting they call the police on the way. Luke agreed and the three of them were back in the car. Reid was driving, Luke giving him directions.

When they pulled up outside, Reid cut the engine and they stared at the building.

“So this is it.”

“I never thought I’d see this place again.” Noah muttered from the back seat.

Luke was staring at the building, a slightly panicked look in his eyes. Reid must have noticed, because he reached over and took Luke’s hand.

“Hey.” Reid said. “You okay?”

“I will be if she’s in there.” Luke answered, his voice low.

“We should wait for the police to show up.”

“I can’t just sit here.” Luke replied, taking off his seatbelt and opening the door.

Reid and Noah exchanged a glance and hurried to get out and help him.

“He’s armed, Luke.” Reid reminded him. “He already shot you once today. You really want to go for round two?”

“I have to do something.” Luke told him. “Either way, I’m going in that building. I can’t come this close to finding Rose to just sit here and wait.”

“I’m going to regret this.” Reid said under his breath.

Luke led the way inside. Reid and Noah helped him up the stairs, trying to be as quiet as possible.

They were nearing the top when they heard it.

Crying.

Luke felt tears come to his eyes.

“I knew it.” He tried to move faster, to ignore the pain. Rose was here. He had to get to her. Reid seemed to sense his urgency or maybe he shared it, because he did his best to get Luke up the remaining stairs as fast as he could. When they were outside the door, Noah opened it slowly. Rose’s cries were louder now.

The three of them slipped inside, trying not to let in too much light. Zac didn’t seem to have heard them over Rose’s wails.

Needless to say, Zac was shocked when he turned around to see the three of them standing there. Luke tried to move fast, to take Rose from Zac’s arms, but pain shot up his side and he doubled over instead. In that split second, Zac grabbed his gun, pointing it at the three men.

Luke managed to stand up after a moment. Reid was holding him up, looking worried. Noah was staring at Zac, unable to take his eyes off him.

“Don’t you people ever die?” Zac asked, eying Luke. Rose was still screaming, her little face scrunched up. Zac held her tightly.

“You’re just a lousy shot, I guess.” Luke told him. Zac just smiled.

“Hello, Monster.” Zac said, looking at Noah. Noah clenched his jaw.

“Leave him alone, Zac.” Luke ordered. “We just came for Rose.”

“You can’t have her, Luciano.”

“She’s mine.”

“And I’m keeping her. She’s the only thing I have left of Zoe.” Zac said.

“Zac, Zoe wanted me to raise her.”

“That’s a lie!”

“No, it’s not.” Luke said. “She told me.” Zac looked shell shocked. “Listen to me, Zac. All I want is Rose. I’m willing to whatever it takes. You want money? It’s yours. Enough to disappear and live comfortably for the rest of your life.” Luke hoped he was getting through to Zac. “Just give me my daughter.”

Zac laughed.

“How about no?” He said, grinning.

“They’ll find you.” Noah finally spoke up. “They’ll find you and you’ll go back to jail.”

“That sounds familiar.” Zac laughed again. “Stop me if you’ve heard this before. ‘Luke will find me. You’ll never get away with this.’” Zac sighed. “Seriously, you need to get a new book of clichés.”

Reid snorted.

“Who the hell are you?”

“Dr. Oliver.” Reid said. Zac stared at them for a few minutes, his head cocked to one side. Luke knew what he was looking at, the closeness between him and Reid evident.

“Well, well, Luciano.” He smiled again. “A doctor. I guess you and Noah didn’t work out?” He shook his head, clucking his tongue. “Shame. We thought you crazy kids would make, Z and I did.”

“Where do you think you’re going to go?” Reid asked, getting Zac’s attention again.

“I really doubt they’ll track us down.” Zac replied. “Rose and I are going back to Malta. The Grimaldi’s will be very interested in her, I’m sure.”

“You can’t take her there!” Luke exclaimed. His arms itched to hold Rose, to get her away from Zac. “They’ll kill you, and they’ll take her. Or they’ll just kill you both.”

“I’ll take my chances.” Zac replied, his grip tightening on the gun. “And on that note.” Zac began edging around them, keeping his gun aimed high. He moved towards the door, never taking his eyes off them. Rose whimpered, sounding distraught, and Luke couldn’t help the tears that slipped down his cheeks. Rose was right here, and he couldn’t touch her.

Reid gripped his hand, and Luke knew he was feeling the same way. Somehow, somewhere along the way, Rose had stopped being just Luke’s daughter. She was theirs.

Zac slipped the gun into his other hand, and Luke winced as it came dangerously close to Rose. They watched as Zac reached behind him and blindly opened the door, backing up into the open doorway.

He’d just taken one step when he froze.

Luke’s eyes widened and he choked out a sob as Damian came into view, a gun pressing into the back of Zac’s head.
