“You’re going to be great.”

Reid turned around at the sound of Luke’s voice. They were standing in the lobby of the courthouse, waiting to be called into the hearing. His hands were shaking, and he felt like he couldn’t breathe. He hoped it didn’t show. Luke leaned over and straightened his tie, a small smile gracing his lips.

“That’s easy for you to say.” Reid managed to keep his voice from shaking.

“No, it’s not.” Luke replied. “If anyone told me a month ago, I’d be here with you right now…”

“Things change.”

“They do.” Reid’s lawyer appeared behind Luke, motioning for Reid. Reid gestured with his head. “They’re ready for us.”

“Remember.” Luke started to say.

“I know, I know. Don’t be an ass.”

Luke laughed, and then gave him quick kiss.

“For luck.” Reid took Luke’s hand, and together followed his lawyer into the courtroom.

“The board said they would call with their decision. Put your phone down.” Luke sighed, as Reid checked his phone for the zillionth time since the hearing ended. They were sitting in the living room of Reid’s condo, each with cell phone in hand.

“I’ll put mine down when you put yours down. How many times have you called your mother today?”

“That’s different.”

“Yes, because Rose couldn’t possibly survive without the constant phone calls from you.” Luke’s face fell, and Reid felt back. “Shit. Sorry.”

“It’s okay. I know you’re just worried.”

“That doesn’t mean I should take it out on you.”

“I know you don’t mean it.”

“Do you?”

“What?” Luke scrunched his face up in confusion. “What are you talking about?”

“I’ve said some…not nice things about you before.”

“So? I said some ‘not nice’ things about you too.” Luke smiled. “It’s all water under the bridge.”

“Is it?”

“Reid, spit it out. What are you asking me?”

“You don’t trust me.” Reid said, and the look on Luke’s face made him with he’d just kept his mouth shut.

“Of course…” Reid held up his hand to stop him.

“You don’t, Luke.” He said. “Otherwise, we’d be upstairs right now, instead of down here obsessively checking our phones like a pair of teenage girls.”

Luke didn’t say anything.

“Look, just forget I said anything, okay?” Reid sighed again. “I shouldn’t have brought it up.”

“I’m glad you did.” Luke finally spoke. Reid felt relief wash through him.

“Yeah?”

“Reid.” Luke replied, getting up and kneeling down in front of him. “I trust you. I do. More than anyone in my life. You know the worst…” Luke’s voice cracked, and he trailed off for a second. “And you’re still here. And for some reason, you still want me.”

“And no matter what else you tell me, I’ll want you then too.”

“I want to believe that, but you just don’t know…” Reid trailed a finger across Luke’s cheek and Luke closed his eyes against the sensation.

“You’re under my skin, Luke.” Reid murmured. “I don’t know how it happened, but there you are. I couldn’t walk away now if I tried. Not when I know that you could feel the same way.”

“I do.” Luke looked a little embarrassed as he opened his eyes and stared into Reid’s. “I understand this less than you do. Somehow you’re just there.” He paused. “I never imagined…well, okay, maybe I imagined it…but I never in a million years believed that we would end up like this.”

“So you did think about me.” Reid was smirking now. “Of course you did.”

“Ego, much?” Luke teased. “You know you’re hot.”

“I am.” Reid was smiling now too.

“You challenge me, and you tell me how it is. You don’t sugar coat things, and you don’t lie to me.” Luke kept going. “You don’t know how…new that is.” He paused, biting his lip. “Sometimes, with Noah, it seemed like our relationship was one big lie. Lying to each other, lying to other people.”

Reid knew better than to interrupt. Luke had finally started talking, and there was no way he was stopping this.

“With you, it’s like…all I have to do is show up.” Luke said, a faraway look in his eyes. “The way you look at me. I can’t doubt that if I tried.”

“If that’s how you really feel…” Reid began softly.

“It is.”

“Then what are you waiting for?” He asked. Luke stared at him for a second, and then he slowly smiled.

“I have no idea.” Luke was just leaning into kiss him when Reid’s phone rang. They both sighed, and Luke sat back on his heels while Reid checked the caller id.

“It’s the board.” He said, his mouth going dry.

“Answer it.”

“What if…” Reid started to say.

“Whatever happens, I’m still here, and we’ll figure it out. Answer it.”

Reid flipped the phone open with shaking hands.

Luke listened as Reid talked, staring at his lips. It didn’t matter the outcome of this phone call. He would still want Reid the same way…and Reid would still want him after he filled him in all the details of his life. He knew that now.

He was ready.

Reid snapped the phone shut, thanking who ever called.

“Well?” Luke asked.

And then Reid was kissing him roughly, his hands pulling Luke towards him, holding him tight. Reid broke the kiss long enough to mumble. “Reinstated.”

“Reid, that’s ama...” Luke gasped out before Reid’s mouth covered his a second time. Reid pulled him to his feet, standing at the same time.

“Let’s go upstairs, Luke.” Reid suggested, speaking against his lips. Luke almost didn’t register what he’d said, the feel of Reid’s mouth on his and Reid’s wandering hands making incapable of rational thought. So he said the first thing that came to mind.

“God, yes.”
