Author's Notes: Here it is, my new wip. Flashbacks are in italics, and there are several lines of dialogue from the show (flashbacks) in the first few chapters. This story picks up right after Luke has promised Reid that his foundation will donate money to the new wing. That means no elevator, no Dallas, etc.

Luke shook Dr. Oliver’s hand, ignoring the tingling sensation that shot up his wrist. After a second, they both let go, and awkwardness permeated the air.

“So, like I said.” Luke crossed his arms over his chest. “Just send over the budget and I’ll get my people on it.”

“I guess we’re going to be working together, then.” Dr. Oliver replied stiffly. “Does that mean I have to be nice to you?”

Luke fought a smile.

“You should save miracles for the operating room.”

He thought he almost saw Dr. Oliver crack a smile, and imagined what Dr. Oliver smiling would be like. He'd bet money it was something. Dr. Oliver opened his mouth to reply, but Margo Hughes approached them, calling Luke’s name.

“Margo?” Luke asked.

“I’m glad you’re here, Luke.” She said, coming to a stop. “I need to talk you about something.”

“What’s up?” Her expression was serious, and Luke knew it was something bad. He could feel Dr. Oliver’s eyes on him.

“We should discuss this in private.” Margo suggested, trying to keep her tone light.

“Margo, please. Just tell me.” She sighed.

“Gia Pinnarosa was brought in about a half hour ago.”

“My patient?” Reid spoke up. “She was brought in with head trauma.” He answered when Luke glanced at him.

“What happened?”

“Are you sure you don’t want to take this somewhere else?” Margo repeated. Luke shook his head. “It looks like the Grimaldi family tried to take her out.”

“What?” Luke was startled. “Why would they do that now? They’ve had plenty of opportunity.”

“Are we casually discussing your family trying to kill someone?” Dr. Oliver wanted to know, looking incredulous.

“You Googled my family, Dr. Oliver.” He sighed. “You should know they’re not a nice bunch.”

“You do come by it honestly.” Luke glared.

“Why now, Margo? Why would they go after her after all this time has passed?” He looked at the detective.

“Gia Pinnarosa is pregnant.” Luke’s eyes widened. “And she’s saying the baby is yours. We think the Grimaldi’s were a little upset about the mother of their new heir.”

“Zoe’s pregnant?” Luke stuttered.

“Nine months, in fact.” Dr. Oliver said slowly, eying Luke carefully.

“Is there something you want to tell me, Luke?” Margo said, her expression gentle.

Luke closed his eyes.

“Why are you doing this? Why won’t you give him the meds?”

“You said you’d do anything I want.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“Don’t be so worried, Luciano. It’s not going to hurt, and you might actually enjoy it.”

“I’ll do whatever you want.”

“I want my mother’s rights restored to her!”

“She’s dead, Zoe!”

“Then it should go to her descendants.”

“What, you?”

“No, my children. I want your first born to be mine. That’s the deal, Luciano. You want me to save your boyfriend; you give me your baby.”

“The baby isn’t mine, Margo.”

“You’re sure about that?” Luke nodded.

“Then you’re okay with the hospital running a paternity test?” Margo wanted to know.

“What?” Luke was a little panicked. “Why?”

“A paternity test.” Margo repeated. “Just to make sure. Memorial already has your DNA on file. When the baby is delivered, they’ll run the test.”

“Yeah, that’s fine.” Luke said softly. He didn't know what else to say.

The two men watched as Margo walked away. Dr. Oliver gave him a long look.

“What aren't you telling her?” He asked.

“Nothing.” Luke stuttered, shocked by Dr. Oliver's accusation. “It’s none of your business anyway.”

“Fine. Whatever.” Luke knew he'd pushed Dr. Oliver too far, because the switch had flipped again. Nice guy gone, arrogant jackass in his place. “It's not like I care.” Dr. Oliver said, turning and walking away.

Luke watched him go.
