Previous Chapters: Prologue/ 1/ 2

Luke was pacing in the hallway, unsure what to do next. He couldn’t wrap his mind around his confrontation with Zoe.

He promised himself, after the whole kidnapping ordeal was over that he would never think about it again. He’d put it out of his mind, like it never happened.

Maybe it wasn’t healthy, and maybe he should have talked about it, but he just…couldn’t. The chances of Zoe getting pregnant with his baby were so small…
There was a very good chance that Zoe was lying. She’d done far worse to get his money.

“Hey.” Luke looked up to see Allison and Noah approaching. She was leading him down the hallway.

“What are you guys doing here?”

“You shouldn’t be alone right now.” Allison said. She reached out and touched his shoulder. “Either one of you.”

“Luke, you said you weren’t going to see her.”

“I know.” He sighed.

“Did you talk to her?” Allison asked.

“Yeah.”

“How’d that go?” Noah wanted to know.

“About as well as you could expect.” Luke answered. “She’s insane.”

“You won’t get any argument from me.”

“Or me.” Allison chimed in.

“I do have one question.” Noah looked confused. “If Zoe was admitted for a head injury, then why is she on the maternity floor? Is she pregnant?”

“Yeah.” Luke replied softly. “She’s holding her own, and as far as I know her baby is fine. Dr. Oliver’s in there right now.”

The door to Zoe’s room suddenly flew open, a loud alarm ringing into the hallway.

“You!” Dr. Oliver pointed at Allison. “Page OB and get in here and help me.” He ordered, disappearing back into the room. Allison jumped, and then rushed into the room.

“What’s going on?” Noah asked.

“I’m not sure.” Luke said. “It didn’t sound good.” Another doctor and a couple of nurses came running down the hall and disappeared into Zoe’s room.

The door of her room banged open and Zoe was wheeled out. Luke moved back, pulling Noah out of the way.

“They’re taking Zoe somewhere.” Luke murmured to Noah.

Dr. Oliver paused, looking at Luke. He looked like he was debating something, approaching Luke and pulling him aside.

“Do you have a minute, Mr. Snyder?”

“Sure.” He glanced at Noah. “I’ll be right back.”

“They’re doing an emergency c-section. I’m going to scrub in and observe. I’m concerned about her head injury.” He said quietly. Luke nodded. “I’ll have someone come out and let you know how it goes…and you didn’t hear this from me.”

“Thanks.” Luke said. Dr. Oliver touched his shoulder, startling him. It was as disconcerting, and Luke glanced down at Dr. Oliver’s hand on his arm. As if realizing what he’d done, Dr. Oliver pulled his hand away. “I’ll let you know as soon as there’s something to know.” He said, turning and heading towards the OR.

Luke walked slowly back to Noah’s side.

“What was that about?”

“It was nothing.”

“Did you two really just have a civil conversation?” Noah asked, sounding shocked.

“Yeah, I guess we did.”

“I thought he hated you.”

“I’m pretty sure he still does.” Luke sighed. “I wasn’t going to tell you about this yet, but the foundation is going to donate money to the new neurology wing.”

“Luke, that’s great.”

“Really?” Luke smiled. “I was worried you’d think I was using it to get you back or something.”

“You wouldn’t do that.” Noah said. “Well, you would, but I don’t think you are.”

Luke laughed.

“I’m going to head out.” Noah told him. “Call me if...if you need to talk.”

“Sure.”

His smile fell as Noah walked away.

*

He was sitting in one of the waiting room chairs when someone sat down beside him.

Luke looked over and saw his mom sitting there, holding out a cup of coffee.

“Noah called.” She said as he took the cup.

“So you know about Zoe?” He replied.

“He said they took her into emergency surgery.” Lily put a hand on his arm. “You can’t blame yourself for what the Grimaldi family does, Luke. This isn’t your fault. After what she did to you and Noah…” Luke flinched as she trailed off.

“I know, Mom.” He said softly. “She hurt you too.”

“How long have you been waiting?”

“Awhile.” Luke answered, glancing at his watch.

“Why don’t we go home?” Lily suggested. “Let the doctors worry about Gia. You don’t need to get mixed up in this mess, especially now that Damian’s in jail.”

“It’s not that simple, Mom.”

“You have such a big heart, Luke.” Lily squeezed his hand. Luke almost told her right then. Nearly told her the truth about Zoe and the baby, and everything that had really happened while he and Noah had been kidnapped. Instead, he saw Dr. Oliver headed his way with Margo Hughes.

Luke stood up as they approached, and he felt his mom put her arm around him. Dr. Oliver had said he would send someone out. Not come deliver news himself. He could only wonder what this meant.

“Luke.” Margo said. “Lily. Has Luke told you what’s going on?” She was clutching an envelope in her hands.

“Just that Zoe was here, and she was in surgery.”

“She was.” Dr. Oliver spoke up. “She had an aneurism during her c-section. There wasn’t anything we could do.”

“C-section?” Lily repeated. “She was pregnant?” She squeezed Luke, whose mouth had dropped open. “That poor baby.”

“Zoe’s dead?” He managed to get out.

“Yes, Luke, Zoe’s dead.” Margo answered.

Luke wished that everyone would just shut up so he could think, but they kept talking. He half heard Margo when she told Lily that Zoe said the baby was his, and it was her sharp intake of breath that forced him to look at her.

“That’s insane.” Lily sounded angry.

“Luke gave us permission to run a paternity test, just to be sure.” Margo answered.

“What?” Lily looked at her son. He was pale, biting his lip. He seemed to be trembling. “Luke, why would you…” She trailed off at the expression on his face.

“Are those the results?” Luke’s voice sounded wrong, even to his ears. It was like he was hearing everything under water.

“Yes.” Margo held out the envelope.

“Did you…” Luke couldn’t get the words out.

“I haven’t opened it.”

Luke took the envelope from her with shaking hands.
