Previous Chapters: Prologue/ 1

“Hey, Allison.” Luke approached his friend, trying to hide his nervousness.

“Hey.” She said, flashing him a smiled. She was behind the nurse’s station, organizing some charts. “What’s up?”

“Can you do me a favor?”

“This sounds serious.” Allison paused, looking up at him.

“It is.”

“What do you need?”

“Get me Gia Pinnarosa’s room number?”

“She’s here?” Allison asked.

“Yeah.”

“Luke, are you sure you should…” She started to say but trailed off at the expression on his face. “I can’t talk you out of this, can I?”

“No.” Luke answered, leaning against the counter. “I have to see her, and I don’t want anyone to know I was there.”

“Luke…”

“Please, Ali.” She sighed, then walked over to the computer, and typed for a few minutes.

“She’s on the maternity floor. Critical but stable condition.” She gave Luke the room number, and covered his hand with hers. “Just…don’t do anything stupid, okay?”

“You know me.” Luke gave her a rueful smile.

“That’s what I’m afraid of.”

“That’s a good boy. Good little baby-making boy.”

“Do you really think you’re gonna get away with this? Even if you do have your precious Grimaldi, you’re not going to be able to raise him.”

“But you will, won’t you, Luciano? You’d never abandon your own son.”

“No, no. I can’t do this. I won’t.”

“Poor Noah. I thought you loved him.”

“I do, you know I do.”

“Then it’s simple. The quicker you give in, the faster he get’s the meds. Trust me. Relax. Who knows, you might even enjoy it.”

“Zoe, Zoe...No.”

“Shh! Just close your eyes, Luciano. Pretend I’m Noah. It’ll all be over in a few minutes.”

Luke hesitated outside of the door. He wasn’t sure he could do this. He sighed and turned the handle, pushing the door open. His mouth ran dry as he caught site of Zoe. She was covered in bruises, one of her eyes swollen shut. Still, she turned her head too look at him when he walked in.

“Well, well, Luciano.” She smiled. “Long time, no see.”

Luke stepped slowly into the room. The sound of the baby’s rapid heartbeat filled the room, in between the beeping of Zoe’s own heart rate.

“Did you tell Monster the good news?” She rubbed her belly. “You’re gonna be a daddy.”

“Don’t call him that.” Luke snapped.

“Fine, Noah.” She rolled her eyes.

“You’re insane.” Luke growled. “That baby is not mine.”

“It’s just like I planned.” Zoe went on as if he hadn’t spoken. “They tried to get rid of me like they got rid of Mama, but it didn’t work.”

“Zoe…” Luke tried to interrupt, but Zoe grabbed his hand. He jerked it out of her grasp. “You’re delusional if you think I’m going to fall for this.”

“You’ll see, Luciano.” She looked smug, and for the first time in his life, Luke wanted to hit a girl. “You know this is your baby.”

“What you did to me, Zoe…” Luke started to say, and choked on his words.

“What we did.” Zoe took his hand again, and put it on her stomach. “Feel, that? He’s kicking.” Luke ripped his hand away as if he’d been burned when the baby kicked against him.

“I had nothing to do with this.”

“You promised me, Luciano, that you’d raise him.” He leaned really close to her, his face inches away from hers.

“This baby is not mine.” He growled, his eyes flashing. Luke jumped back as the door opened. Dr. Oliver was standing there.

“You’d think if hell froze over, it’d be on the news, Mr. Snyder.” He said to Luke, moving into the room.

“Dr. Oliver.” Luke greeted. “I was just leaving.” He brushed past Dr. Oliver on his way out the door. As it was closing behind him, he heard Zoe’s voice.

“Ciao, Luciano.”
