“Reid?” Luke asked. “How is he?”

“He’s fine.” Reid had barely managed to say, and then his arms were filled with Luke. He let out a startled noise, nearly dropping Noah’s chart. Luke’s arms were around him, squeezing him tightly, his face buried in Reid’s neck.

“Thank you.” Luke murmured, as Reid self-consciously returned Luke’s hug with his free arm.

“You’re welcome.” Reid told him, his voice just as soft. Reid caught sight of Luke’s parents, both looking startled. Reid pulled back a little, putting his hand on Luke’s cheek. “We’re going to move him to ICU once he’s out of recovery, just for observation.” Luke nodded. “He should sleep through the night.”

“And will he…” Luke trailed off, sounding afraid to ask. “Will he be able to see?”

“There’s no way to know until he wakes up.” Reid answered. “I’m cautiously optimistic that he’ll at least partially recover his sight.” Luke let out a huge breath. “You should go home, get some sleep.”

“No, I…” Luke protested. “I promised.” His eyes met Reid’s, as if he was willing him to understand. Reid didn’t, of course, but he didn’t say that.

“Fine. It’s going to be a long night.”

“You’ll be here, right?”

“I’m not going anywhere.”

“Then I’m staying.”

“I’ll get Rose from the farm and take her home for you.” Lily offered, and Luke turned around to glance at her, as if he’d just remembered that he and Reid weren’t alone.

“Thanks, Mom.”

“Is there anything you need before we leave?” Holden asked. Luke shook his head.

“Keep us posted.” Lily said. Luke let go of Reid long enough to hug and kiss his parents good-bye. Once they were gone, he nearly tackled Reid again, holding him tightly.

“All these months of just…” Luke trailed off, looking into Reid’s eyes. “It’s like I’m free.”

He looked so elated; Reid couldn’t resist kissing him again. He dropped Noah’s chart this time as Luke wrapped his arms around Reid’s neck. His hands found their way into Reid’s hair, tangling in the locks and pulling lightly.

“Dr. Oliv - oh, God, sorry!” A female voice exclaimed behind them.

The flew apart, gasping for air.

“What?” Reid snapped, turning around to see a nurse practically cowering in the doorway.

“I’m sorry.” She stammered. “But you wanted to know when we were moving Mr. Mayer to ICU.”

“Right.” Reid sighed, bending down and picking up Noah’s chart from the floor.

“Hi, Becca.” Luke gave her an embarrassed wave. She smiled back, looking like she was on the verge of laughter. He turned to Reid. “Can I see him?”

“He’s going to be unconscious.” Reid reminded him.

“Please.”

“Let us get him moved first.” Luke nodded.

Reid followed the nurse out with a sigh.

Luke turned the handle to Noah’s room slowly, pushing it open and seeing Reid standing at Noah’s beside, making notes in his chart.

“How’s he doing?”

“His readings look good.” Reid answered, glancing at Luke. “You can come in.” He told Luke with a small smile.

Luke entered the room, and let the door shut behind him. He shoved his hands in his pockets, watching as Reid check Noah’s vitals, and adjusted the medication flow on his IV.

“When do you think he’ll wake up?”

“It’s hard to say. Everyone handles anesthesia differently.” Luke nodded. Reid glanced at his watch. “I have to go make rounds. I’ll come back and check on you soon.”

Luke nodded, sitting down in the chair next to the bed. Reid squeezed his shoulder and then left the room. Luke stared at Noah for a long moment, flashing back to when he was first injured. He was bandaged nearly the same way. A large bandage was on the back of his head, held in place with gauze and a mesh cap. There were also bandages covering his eyes.

“We did it, Noah.” He whispered, taking Noah’s hand. “Reid says that surgery went well. Now all you have to do is wake up.”

When Reid came back from rounds to check on Noah, he found Luke curled up in the arm chair, sound asleep. He stopped and stared at him for a second, realizing just how young his boyfriend was.

Boyfriend. He laughed silently. Reid still couldn’t believe this crazy relationship they’d suddenly found themselves in. His attraction to Luke had been there from the beginning, the minute he’d heard Luke’s voice on the phone. Luke blackmailing him had been kind of a turn on.

Coming face to face with the blond for the first time, he’d been irritated at the way Luke had made him feel. He didn’t want to be attracted to him, didn’t want to feel anything for this kid who dared to drag him away from a successful career. And then he’d watched him - even after trying to keep Luke away.

He’d never in a million years imagined that he’d being dating a twenty-two year old college dropout, who was running two successful businesses, and had tons of money. If anyone had told him this is how his time in Oakdale would go, he would have laughed in their face after telling them exactly what he thought of their intelligence.

He snapped his fingers in Luke’s direction, hoping to wake him quietly, and keep Noah asleep a little longer. The anesthesia would be starting to wear off. Reid sighed and then shook Luke’s shoulder.

Startled, Luke sat straight up in the chair.

“Shh!” Reid warned him, and Luke blinked with sleep heavy eyes. “Come with me.” Reid whispered.

Luke stood, stumbling a little, still half asleep.

“Noah?” He mumbled.

“Still fine.” Reid put his arm around Luke, and led him out of the room, and down the hall.

“Where we goin’?” Luke asked, still trying to wake up.

“My office.” Reid answered. “There’s a couch in there you can sleep on.”

“Mmmkay.” Luke replied.

“You are so out of it.” Reid laughed.

“Mmmhmm.” Reid ushered Luke into his office, pausing a moment to shut and lock his office door, before sitting down with Luke on the couch.

Luke immediately snuggled against him, and Reid stared at him with a sigh.

“What am I going to do with you?” He whispered, knowing he wouldn't want Luke to be any other way.

“Reid?” Luke said, sounding like he was asleep already.

“Hmm?”

“Love you.” He murmured.

Reid sat there frozen, unable to take his eyes off Luke. A moment of silence passed, and the Luke let out a little snore. Reid smiled, leaned back, and closed his eyes.
