Luke stood in the living room, his arms crossed over his still bare chest. He watched as Reid found his shirt and walked back over to him. Luke was startled when Reid bunched up the fabric and then slipped it over his head, instead of handing to him. Luke automatically put his arms through the sleeves and then shivered as Reid smoothed the fabric into place.

Reid had neglected to put his shirt back on, and Luke was momentarily distracted by the hard planes of his chest. He reached a shaking hand out to touch him lightly, and Reid took hold of his hand before he could make contact. Luke let himself be maneuvered over to the couch, and Reid pushed on his shoulders until he was sitting. Reid sat down next to him, scooting into the corner of the couch and turning to the side. Luke was surprised when Reid’s leg slid behind him and even more surprised when he felt Reid’s hands slip around his waist and gently pull him backwards. Before he could blink, he was nestled between Reid’s legs, his head lying back on Reid’s chest. Reid wrapped his arms around Luke, and he shivered again.

He was cold, but it wasn’t the air in the room. He was cold from the inside, and didn’t know how to warm that up.

“Is this…are we…cuddling?” He asked Reid quietly, trying to…he didn’t even know.

“Of course not.” Reid answered. Luke could hear amusement in his tone. “I don’t cuddle.”

“I’m pretty that’s what this is called.”

“I’m pretty sure I’ll deny it if it’s ever brought up in the future.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Never happened.” Luke titled his head back so he could see Reid’s face. The cold inside him thawed a little as he took in Reid’s gentle smile.

“I don’t know where to start.” He mumbled, and one of Reid’s hands rose up to stroke his cheek.

“The beginning is usually a good place.”

*

A hour ago, Reid was the happiest he could remember being. Luke and he were alone, in his house, and he about to take him to bed. He couldn’t even admit to himself how many times he’d fantasized about that very thing.

It was going well, until he’d done the worst thing he could have…and it didn’t make it any better that there was no way he could have known. When he’d called Luke ‘Luciano’ and Luke had frozen, Reid had thought it was because he didn’t like his name. But then Luke had struggled out of his grasp, nearly throwing himself across the room in his panic. When Luke hit the wall, Reid felt the echoing thud in his chest.

This was bad.

Luke didn’t respond for a second, he wouldn’t let Reid touch him. In those moments it sank in, really hit home for him how much what Zoe had done had really affected. It was possible Luke hadn’t even realized how deep the damage had gone until then.

Reid felt like he’d been running a marathon, his heart was beating so fast, and it wasn’t until Luke finally looked at him and spoke that he was able to calm back down.

And now Luke was going to tell him everything.

He wasn’t sure he wanted to know anymore, but it didn’t matter because he needed to know.

“When I was fifteen, I drank so much that at sixteen, I was a full blown alcoholic and recovering from a kidney transplant.” Luke started talking, and Reid tried to hide his shock. He never expected…

He stayed silent, keeping his expression neutral while Luke talked about why he started drinking (his parents), and why he kept drinking after his transplant (his fear of coming out). Reid’s only response was to occasionally tighten his arms around Luke or run his fingers through Luke’s hair. He’d barely paid attention to the transplant scar upstairs, distracted as he was, but he pictured it now in his head and wondered how he’d missed it.

Luke kept talking, and Reid kept listening. Luke told him about meeting Noah, thinking he had fallen for another straight guy, only to steal him away from his girlfriend, one of Luke’s best friends. When Luke began talking about Noah’s father and then how he attacked Luke and his subsequent paralysis, Reid gripped Luke so tightly that he stopped talking.

“Reid.” Luke said, and he looked down at him. “It’s all right. I’m fine now.”

“Yeah.” Reid breathed, and then forced himself to loosen his hold.

Luke told Reid about rigging his college election, getting kicked out of school, and his relapse into drinking. He said that Noah was the one who turned him in, something Reid couldn’t fathom after the mess that was Noah’s fake marriage, and he almost said so, but he didn’t want to interrupt. There would be time for that later.

By the time that Luke had told him about Brian, and getting back together with Noah (and finally having sex after two years), Reid was biting his tongue in order to keep from commenting. The things he wanted to say, not only about Noah, but he wanted to ask Luke.

And then Luke sighed, and began talking about his hit and run, and how Damien came back to town. He paused for a moment, and Reid knew they were getting close.

“Zac and Zoe approached me to be volunteers at my foundation.” Luke began again. “They said they were twins, and while they were a little weird, they had a lot of good ideas.” Reid felt Luke take his hand, start playing with his fingers.

“After the hit and run, weirder things happened - Damien was stabbed, the foundation accounts were hacked, and then…” Luke’s voice cracked. “Noah was just gone. He called and said he went to a film festival in Lisbon, a last minute thing for school.” Luke swallowed. “Damien checked and found out Noah wasn’t there…and then a ransom note showed up.”

“I wanted to pay, but the cops talked me out of it.” Luke sighed again. “After a few days, I got a text from Noah, telling me to meet him at this storage facility…”

Reid couldn’t take it anymore. He had to say something.

“You went?” His tone was incredulous. “You didn’t call the cops?”

“Yes, I went, and no, I didn’t.” Luke glared. “Do you want me to keep talking or not?” Reid gave him a go ahead gesture. “I found Noah, they found me, and ties us up. They came up with some plan to get my inheritance from my mom, and while they were gone we were going to get out of there, but Zac and Zoe showed up with a gun - my mom didn't give them the money. They shot Noah, and left us tied up there for days.” Luke was choking on his words now. “You already know what Zoe did to me, and why.”

“I do.” Reid said, his voice soft. “But you need to tell me what happened after.” Luke inhaled shakily.

“Noah thought he stopped her.” Luke was whispering now. “He managed to get her off me somehow and pin her down with his legs, and then Damian was there, and the cops and it was just over.” Reid watched a tear fall from the corner of Luke’s eye and wiped it away with his thumb. “I couldn’t tell them, I didn’t want them to know. So I kept quiet.”

“Why?”

“I…” Luke trailed off. “At the time, it seemed the best way. Noah was in the hospital, and my parents were just glad I was okay, and I just…didn’t want to worry them. I wanted to forget.”

“Did you and Noah…”

“Have sex after?” Luke finished for him. “We weren’t ever one of those couples who…sex wasn't the main focus of our relationship. Not that we didn't enjoy it.”

“I got the picture, but is that a yes or a no?”

“We did, but not very much, and we haven’t since before his accident.”

“And he never called you anything but Luke.” Luke nodded.

“I think tonight was just a fluke, Reid.”

“Maybe.” Reid allowed. They were quiet for a moment, Luke finally relaxing completely against Reid.

“I can’t believe you’re still here.” Luke laughed a little.

“I told you so.”

“You’ve been waiting all night to say that, haven’t you?

“I enjoy being right.”
