Meat - part c
The next day waiting for Rhys with the van. Again positioned off to Jack’s right.
Ianto doesn’t appear comfortable in dark spaces
He is seated near to Jack though.
Once the mission is underway he does his job with a minimum of fuss.
But then again poor Ianto gets another gun pulled on him. Three times so far this has happened to him. He lifts his hands out in the traditional I am not armed pose.
Ianto silently communicates with Rhys and makes sure that Owen is not detected by the others.
Oh and really not happy about having a gun pulled on him again.
Ianto has been separated closer to the Space Whale so that Jack and the others can see him.
Rhys looks to Ianto to see what he should be doing but Ianto is shocked.
Gwen has appeared and now Ianto remembers what he should be doing
Jack and Tosh get spotted and Ianto is then put in danger, even more, but what is up with his facial expression? What is he up to?
I think he is up to something…
Ianto really isn’t happy about that gun.
But why is he pulling those faces, are they familiar to Jack in any way?
Why is he looking at Jack quite calmly now? There are lots of stupid low class criminals with guns around.
Right, now he is action Ianto! Look, hands are all free…
They tussle for the gun. All the while it discharges all it’s round.
Jack sends Ianto off after the criminals while Jack, Tosh, Gwen and Rhys are trapped.
You do not mess with Ianto Jones when his friends are in danger.
“Pray they survive”
You really don’t want to mess with him.
Advice for Rhys, “next time, let her take the bullet.” This is an interesting comment from Ianto. It is one of snark that is in character for him, but it also makes you wonder if he is putting himself in Rhys’ shoes and thinking out loud to make sure that he remembers to let Jack take a bullet and not to try and protect Jack.
Rhys says “never”
Gwen has been sent off to retcon Rhys. Ianto is with Jack in his office. Ianto has a tumbler of scotch and is watching Jack. Ianto is in a state of undress like we have never seen before. Interestingly Owen is working on his computer and Tosh is pottering about with some tech on her desk, but Jack and Ianto are sharing a drink in Jack’s office.
Gwen comes back to offer up her ultimatum. Ianto tells her “it’s the rules” and he is placed once again at Jack’s back. There to support Jack.
Gwen tells Jack “You all think it's cold and lonely out there, but it isn't for me, because I have him”
Ianto stays glancing down at the floor until Gwen threatens to leave.
When Jack turns towards him to toss the water bottle, Ianto seems to instinctively look down even before Jack tosses the bottle.
Once the confrontation with Gwen is over, Ianto hands Jack back his bottle, but he avoids looking at Jack.
Ianto is perturbed with how it has ended up.
Interestingly, Ianto in his position by the door could be watching Jack right during the final moments.
Meat was a real contrast with the Jack/Ianto relationship and the Gwen/Rhys. We saw a relationship outside of work and one inside. The outside relationship had been spoken about and discussed before but never witnessed first hand. There were clues in this episode that the internal relationship was going on, although it appears that their workmates had not really noticed or remarked upon it.
So how does Ianto see Jack now? Jack is his ‘partner’ and he likes that it is a secret. He knows what upsets Jack and how to make him ‘behave’. Jack does surprise him at times, and at other times he can predict what he is going to do. At no time does he lecture him. He just lets Jack be Jack, and with one statement can cause Jack to adjust his behaviour. He also will fight and be ruthless in revenge for possibly hurting his workmates and Jack.
