Small Worlds
Ianto is back from suspension and has noticed something a little odd. He is working back late in the Hub. Jack notices him before Ianto knows that Jack is watching him. Jack states that he shouldn’t be there.
Ianto looks up slightly startled and very quietly responds with a neither should you. His tone is very different from anything we have heard him speak to Jack like before. They stare at each other for a moment and at Jack starting to move towards him, Ianto drops his head and quickly heads over to Owen’s monitors. This is presumably to continue what he was working on, but his skittishness is more likely to be nerves around Jack.
Jack follows and places a hand on his shoulder.
Ianto is then slightly surprised by the touch and looks at the hand, up to Jack’s face, back to the hand and then back to the screen.
He then straightens up and gives a large sigh, Jack pats him once on the shoulder and removes his hand. Ianto glances back again at Jack before returning his eye line to the monitors and the task at hand.
When we next see Ianto, he is serving tea in the boardroom, while the team meet to discuss fairies.
He serves Jack first. One hand in his trouser pocket and he has moved close to Jack.
He adds his theory that it is magic mushrooms and Jack responds with a “what you do in private is none of our business.”
Ianto has now both his hands in his trouser pockets and is looking down directly at Jack.
The camera cuts away just as Jack glances up at Ianto. A few moments later Ianto is handing a cup of tea to Tosh over Gwen. Owen has collected his own. Ianto gets the final cup for himself and moves out of view.
So Jack and Ianto have moved on after the events in Cyberwoman. Ianto is nervous to be alone with Jack, but is accepting of his presence.
It is only when there is the team around that he feels he can get close to Jack, test the waters so to speak.
Countrycide
Our first view of the team is at a roadside café, Ianto waiting for the cheeseburgers that he has ordered for the team. He is seemingly back in his role of providing sustenance for the team. He wanders around, looking out over the road while the others discuss why they are out there. He brings the food for the rest of the team, minus Tosh. Not a lot of interaction going on here than would be normal for the team. They then move to the camping place. Ianto is, again, doing his normal job of making the place run. Here he is putting up a tent, while Jack is helping Owen carry out his own tent.
Owen states that there are bits missing, Ianto replies, “No. I checked.” So Jack sprung the idea of camping on all the others, but Ianto was in on it from the start.
Gwen starts her little game of who is the last person you snogged. They are still moving things around at this stage and Ianto looks a little concerned when Tosh is asked by Gwen.
He puts the camp bed down next to Tosh and sits down, keeping his eyes downcast for most of the scene. He glances up at the person he is speaking to at the end of each statement when he is talking, but then drops his eye line back down. As Gwen and Owen leave he watches them and then looks directly at Jack.
Ianto normally would look away quickly from Jack when caught looking at him directly, but they each hold each others eyes and then it is Ianto that looks away from Jack’s stare. Ianto has just behaved like a brat and he knows it. He isn’t sorry for what he did, which was to remind the others about Lisa, but to also in way punish Gwen for her silly game which hurt Tosh. Ianto shows a lot of caring for Tosh in this episode, so that has to be taken into consideration when looking at his actions here.
Now there has always been an idea that Ianto lied deliberately here about his kiss with Jack. In going over that kiss, I am of the opinion, he would not have been aware of Jack kissing him. As I explained in part c of Cyberwoman, if we take his breath at the very end as being him coming back to life, then Ianto would not really have been aware of Jack’s actions. He possibly suspects that Jack might have kissed him, but I don’t think he actually knows.
Next time we see Ianto and Jack are when the team is investigating the body that Gwen and Owen discovered. Ianto is putting up the crime scene tape. Gwen questions why it happens, Tosh provides one possible reason then Ianto feels secure enough to put his own thoughts. He does say first “Maybe it was a warning.” He then pauses, while looking at Jack for a few beats, seeing if he will be listened to before continuing with his own theory. He waited for Jack, to see if he would be listened to.
The SUV then gets stolen and the team is off and running after it. While the rest of the team is pottering around a little lost about what to do, Ianto is quietly in the foreground proving that there is a brain in his head.
While he is quite physically separated from the team, and working on his own, he is still listening in and interrupts at the right moment to let them know what he has done. He draws the rest of the team to him. When Jack asks if they fancy a walk, Ianto glances at Tosh and can’t see the harm in a walk…
Ianto takes the lead during the tracking for the SUV. When he is asked by Jack, he is professional and capable and no one would suspect that this is his first time out in the field.
Once at the village and Jack takes the lead, Ianto keeps his eyes on Jack. When Jack addresses him and Tosh he turns his body towards Jack. He motions off to the side, glances at Jack and then Ianto leads Tosh towards where the PDA is telling him the SUV is.
The team is fully separated now until the very end. We get information that Ianto doesn’t feel the same way, the same excitement the others do. He is concerned about who looks after them. He proves that he can and will look after Tosh, that he will keep his head when trouble arises.
Most people consider Countrycide to have quite a pivotal Jack and Ianto moment in the discussion about the kisses and yet to me it is now more about a variety of reasons, the least being Ianto possibly remembering a kiss between he and Jack.
