Our first view of Ianto is of him taking notes around the transporter. Later we find out that Jack has been the one researching it, not allowing Tosh to work on it. But Ianto has access to it. Oh and note that in this scene Torchwood seem to have a soccer ball that makes no sound when it is bounced.
When Tosh has the pendant on around Ianto, she hears his thoughts about the pain he feels all over and the rats in his stomach. For someone who is still grieving and physically beaten and mentally traumatized from the last mission he still manages to look quite adorable.
Mary says “and how I love this body. So soft. So wicked. A power such a body has in this world.”
What is Ianto thinking here? His eyebrow flickers when she says “a power such as”. It is the only movement on his face. There are many possible interpretations. Is he considering using a soft, wicked body for power? Seems strange to consider seeing as they catch Mary, and for all her supposed power of her body it doesn’t stop them catching her. Mary had just glanced his and Owens way as she ran her hands down her body. So it could be that he was appreciating the view in front of him. Or another explanation could be that he thinks what Mary is saying is a load of tripe. There are too many variables to try and figure out where he is coming from at this point and there are no other clues within the episode to help us out.
What is interesting is the way that Ianto is mirroring Jack’s stance though out this sequence.
When Mary holds Tosh with a knife, Ianto is shown to be the last to move, after Jack has.
Tosh has the pendant on and she can hear Owen and Gwen, but there is silence from Jack and Ianto. So far this is only the second time she has heard Ianto, the first, when he was cleaning up near the boardroom and he didn’t know she was there. He flinches very slightly when Tosh announces her presence and once he knows she is there, we no longer hear any thoughts from him in between his talking, unlike Owen and Gwen. Again now when Tosh has the pendant on, we can hear Owen and Gwen, but no Ianto.
Finally we hear a second thought from Ianto. “Not again, please god, not again.”
Note the similarity in the stance of Jack and Ianto
Jack promises an exchange of the transporter for Tosh. We finally get another thought from Ianto, “It’s a bluff. That thing can’t still work.” Mary takes the bait and lets Tosh go, who runs to Ianto. Ianto moves just slightly off to the side to allow Tosh to stand near him, his focus still on Jack and Mary, but his hand on her shoulder.
As Jack steps back to observe Mary using the transporter, he and Ianto are again mirroring each other.
Jack willingly kills Mary and yet he also considers Ianto to be the best option to do the report debrief with Tosh.
What does Ianto think of Jack in this episode? Well, again we get very little clues. Unconsciously, when they are in a room together, they mirror each other. Ianto seems to have either a very good control level over his thoughts or possibly some level of psychic training. There is still his grief and regret about Lisa. Also his very recent field experiences. Those are the main thoughts in his mind at this time. Which is very understandable. We are left with many questions and too few answers.
