They Keep Killing Suzie - Part a
When we first see Ianto this episode, he is walking across the Hub floor area to join the others in the boardroom. Jack calls upon him to provide the number of victims they have retconned. Then Gwen badgers Jack into using the glove. The action moves to Jack’s office and the glove. Ianto, who had seemingly left the boardroom before Gwen got Jack to agree to use the glove, is now back with the rest of the team. He stands very still, eyes on the glove that Jack has brought up from the Secure Archives.
Owen and Tosh bicker back and forth around him, but he does not waver in his stance or his look. Ianto then names it the “Risen Mitten”
Ianto has kept his eyes purely on the glove up to now. As he names it, he glances up to Jack, and very quickly changing to look at Owen and Tosh, to see their reactions, after he realises that Jack is looking at him.
He then looks back to the glove, to avoid the possibility of looking at Jack.
Next time we see the team, they are in the autopsy bay with Alex Arwen’s body. Jack and Ianto are again mirroring each other with a closed off body posture. Now Ianto’s hands are clasped in front of him, the same as he had just done in Jack’s office, but Jack is also showing a closed off body posture, with his arms across his chest as Gwen asks if he is ok.
Jack then turns and quickly tosses the stopwatch to Ianto. It is quite a fast movement and it seems that this has happened before.
They then go into professional mode, Jack using the glove and Ianto timing and checking the monitor with Owen. Ianto does glance between Jack and the monitor though. The longest he looks at Jack is when Jack starts explaining to Gwen what it is like to use the glove. When Jack pulls the glove off and offers it to Owen, Ianto lets out a large sigh.
When Gwen offers to use it, Jack looks at Ianto and Owen before handing over the glove. Ianto seems to think it might work.
Jack and Gwen swap places by the body. Gwen is able to revive Alex Arwen almost right away. He lasts for 24 seconds. Now Gwen is upset at this, her natural empathy coming to the fore here, and yet Ianto is almost happy about Gwen’s ability here. He calls her “Amazing” and a “natural”. He is looking at Jack as he says this and it seems that he is happy that it is Gwen that can use it, as it is in marked contrast to the concern on his face and the large sigh he emitted earlier when Jack couldn’t use the glove.
Then Owen makes the comment about give “Ianto a stopwatch and he is happy.” Which is quickly responded to with “It’s the button on the top.” Now Ianto is fairly deadpan in his facial expression as he says this while looking at Owen
But the very end he moves his glance from Owen to Jack and his expression changes. We get one of Ianto’s glances at Jack when he suspects that Jack won’t be looking at him.
Ianto is flirting with Jack in a very roundabout way, but it is in such a situation that he can do so without it really being recognised or understood. Here we get an indication that he is interested in Jack. He is testing the waters.
When Mark Bristow is revived and it is revealed that Suzie was the woman who talked to Max, we get reaction shots from all the team. The last is Ianto, who finishes his job but has a look of complete shock on his face.
When the team next convene in the Boardroom, it is very interesting their placement. Gwen and Owen are seated. Jack is standing at the head of the table, Tosh enters through the door and stays standing to start with as she gives her presentation, but then she sits down. But where is Ianto, he is not seated, he is still standing, just to the right of Owen and up against the wall.
Magicrie has pointed out that Ianto never sits until Jack does. He waits for Jack to lead and then he will follow in respect to placements in meetings. But I also think that there are issues between Suzie and Ianto. It could just be that he never liked her, but once Suzie is revived, Ianto makes himself very scarce for the rest of the episode. The rest of the team all grab a copy of the pamphlet, Ianto stays up against the wall, his eyes darting around but he isn’t moving from that wall.
To further my case of showing Ianto’s discomfort about Suzie, when her body is down in the autopsy, Ianto is standing side on to the body, avoiding looking at it. Tosh retreats and Jack asks if anyone else wants to leave too, Ianto has a nervous look at Jack at this time. But stays standing facing the monitor. Eyes darting back and forth from there to Jack. Once Gwen starts trying to use the glove, Ianto stares at the monitor and only looks up once Gwen has finished.
The decision is made to use the knife on Suzie. The team is back in Jack’s office and Ianto has been separated from them and positioned directly in front of Jack.
Like before with the Risen Mitten, Ianto looks at the object and not Jack. He names it the Life Knife. Jack is looking directly at him and Ianto continues to stare at the knife.
Ianto is again in the room when they plunge the knife into Suzie and use the glove, but again, like before he is turned side on to her so that he doesn’t have to look at her. When Gwen falls, back it is Ianto that notices that Suzie is still alive, but he trusts his stopwatch and the monitor and has his back turned to the body. Suzie also asks if Owen and Tosh are there. She doesn’t mention Ianto at all, and Owen doesn’t include him in the “gang”.
