Captain Jack Harkness - part a
Although there is minimal direct Jack and Ianto contact in this episode, we get a good handle on Ianto’s feelings about Jack and his own placement within Torchwood.
The episode opens with us seeing that Owen is sleeping away and that it is Ianto who is working in the Hub.
Tosh has left the alert to contact Ianto, not the others, but Ianto. Tosh trusts and knows that Ianto would have the understanding. Ianto is also without his jacket, which is an odd look in itself. He is feeling more comfortable in his role, that he has shed a layer.
He informs Owen what is happening and is being proactive in trying to contact Tosh.
When Owen queries why he doesn’t know about it, you get a little look of sympathy from Ianto. He can identify with Owen about having time off from work and not being kept in the loop.
Ianto then goes back to doing his job.
Owen finds his way into Tosh’s files
As he points out the date that Diane flew back into the Rift, we get another clue that Owen and Ianto have some shared experiences in that Ianto realizes that Owen was in love with Diane. Ianto’s face softens as he asks Owen about it.
But then we get Ianto directly mentioning Jack, “Jack would never allow it” and that he will do what Jack expects or would like.
When Owen walks off, Ianto understands that Owen is on a dangerous path. One that could destroy the world just to get back the woman he loved. Ianto knows the consequences of this and is willing to try and stop Owen. He is Jack’s man through and through and has moved on from his grief. Owen doesn’t see Ianto’s expression but if he did, he might have just paid attention that it is bad idea to mess with Ianto.
Ianto is a little shocked to see Jack and Tosh back in 1941 Cardiff
Ianto again showing that he knows more about each of the team members, he knows that Tosh always takes her laptop with her. Owen is on a single track about opening the Rift. Ianto keeps throwing little spanners in the works.
Gwen and Ianto communicate via the comms and they discover that Bilis is possibly in on it. Ianto suspects a trap and orders Gwen out of there. Owen tries to counterman the order and asks who exactly put him in charge. Ianto doesn’t answer but he does stare Owen down.
Gwen obeys Ianto and leaves the Ritz dancehall.
