Captain Jack Harkness - part b
Owen has decided to take matters into his own hands and use the Rift Manipulator
Ianto questions him. Ianto actually knows about the Rift Manipulator. He knows how risky it is, even with the equation.
Owen is justifying opening the Rift by the fact that bombs are falling and it is their “duty” to get them out. Ianto knows it is too risky but at the word duty he falters.
Ianto is trying to reason with Owen, about the consequences of opening the Rift and the danger. He is trying to do what Jack would expect of him. We know that Ianto is upset due to the change in his voice.
Ianto has figured out that this is really about Diane and not Jack and Tosh. He confronts Owen. Telling him that Diane chose to leave him. Owen turns it back on Ianto and brings up Lisa. That Lisa didn’t have a choice.
Ianto tells him to “stop it”. Lisa is still a sore point and Owen drives it home that Lisa was a metal monster and not a human being. Ianto responds with “I thought she was still Lisa. I loved her.” Ianto has moved on, he has recognized that the Lisa we met in Cyberwoman wasn’t the Lisa he knew. He also refers to loving Lisa in the past tense. He then leans over Owen, physically dominating him, as he leans in for the kill “you only knew Diane for a week.”
Owen still has a one track mind and shoves some pipes at Ianto. Ianto then paces away from Owen, arms crossed and his shirt sleeves are undone and partly rolled up. Not neatly. So we know that Ianto is under stress here and is starting to show it.
Owen tries to start the manipulator and discovers that it doesn’t work, that there is a piece missing. As he walks past Ianto to head off to search for the missing piece, Ianto actually grabs him and spins him around. Ianto actually touches one of his teammates. Owen is surprised and Ianto is earnest and suggests that to Owen that “maybe you should go home”
Owen isn’t having any of it and tells Ianto that “you don’t have any power over me.” Ianto is resolved. He does not back down from a senior teammate.
Owen then agrees, he sees something in Ianto’s gaze and tells him “Ok Ianto, we will play it your way. Safe and boring.”
Ianto is working away, trying to solve it. Owen comes past and starts to head out the Cog door. Ianto questions where he is going. Again Ianto is acting as if Owen should be listening to him, obeying him.
Owen tells him he is going to Bilis’ office to try and get some clues. Ianto doesn’t think it is a good idea, but doesn’t quite know how to stop Owen. So he says nothing.
But when he turns away, we can see that he is displeased.
Gwen finds Tosh’s photograph and tells Ianto, but he tells her he needs more equations. Gwen is actually deferring to Ianto, trusting his knowledge.
Owen returns with the missing piece just as Gwen finds the rest of the readings. Gwen lets them know that there has been deliberate sabotage on the equation and that Tosh left a message “Tell my family I love them”
