Captain Jack Harkness - part c
Owen then starts up again on the Rift Manipulator. Ianto still trying to reason with him. Arms crossed and very closed off body language. Ianto is normally very careful to appear unthreatening around the team, arms at his side or in his default position around Jack of hands in his pockets. He is standing very like Jack does normally when Jack is worrying out a problem. His waistcoat is now undone and so is the top button on his shirt.
Everything Ianto says is being rebuffed by Owen, and as Owen puts in the final piece Ianto comes closer and actually yells at Owen.
Owen wants to open the safe and is going through the drawers on Jack’s desk (I did have going through Jack’s drawers, but thought that would possibly give some people a visual image they don’t really want.)
Ianto tells him that he has no right to open the safe. Owen yells back that he is second in command and has every f***in right.
Ianto physically leans forward to tell Owen that there is stuff in there that they don’t know about and that is the way that Jack likes it. Ianto is being Jack’s loyal soldier. He is obeying Jack’s unspoken orders.
Owen tells him that he isn’t going to play with Jack’s toys. When Owen finds the passcode, Ianto knows what they are without looking. So Ianto has the codes to the safe and yet the second in command in Owen doesn’t. Ianto thinks they shouldn’t know the codes as that is the way that Jack likes it, but he has been told the codes by Jack. Ianto knows that he is different to the rest of the team in how Jack treats him.
As Ianto watches Owen go through the Secure Archives, he is trying to think what to do, how to stop Owen.
You don’t mess with Ianto’s Archives….
When Owen finds the blueprints for the Rift Machine, Ianto has made up his mind and runs out of Jack’s office with Owen right on his heels. Ianto tries to take the blueprints off of Owen. He is showing very aggressive body posture, arm outstretched and pointing at Owen.
He knows it is a trap, he is the one that is clued into what is really happening, but he is also the one showing the most dismay out of them all. Ianto yells and begs Owen to listen to him. “Please listen to me.” This harkens back to Cyberwoman where he asked Jack repeatedly to listen to him, or accused him of not listening.
Owen is tired of living in awe of the Rift. He is tired of living with Jack’s secrets. He doesn’t know who he is. Ianto answers, “He is our leader.” Owen is having none of that. As he walks past Ianto, Ianto shows that he knows how to grapple. He grabs one of Owen’s arms behind his back and as he pulls him down he warps his other hand around Owen’s face. Ianto has totally lost his normal composure and is using his superior size against Owen. But Owen isn’t without a few tricks and elbows him in the stomach.
As Ianto reaches for the book, Owen kicks him in the stomach.
Owen is working through the instructions when Ianto tells him, in a very growly voice, to “put the key down.”
Owen pauses and then discovers that it probably wasn’t wise to kick Ianto and mess around in his Archives. Because Ianto doesn’t look happy.
In fact this is a good reason to listen to Ianto
Ianto tells Owen that he has to let Diane go, like he did with Lisa.
Owen tells him not to compare himself to Owen, even though there are very strong parallels between the ways they both have acted in the face of losing a loved one.
Owen tells him he is “just a tea boy” trivialising Ianto’s position. Ianto responds with “I am much more than that. Jack needs me.”
We aren’t shown Ianto’s face when he says that Jack needs him, but Owen’s instead. Owen is dismissive and has a little smirk on his face, not believing Ianto. “In your dream’s Ianto. In your sad wet dreams when you are his part time shag maybe.” We get an indication here that Owen suspects that Ianto dreams of Jack, he says that second line with no break meaning that he is essentially saying that Ianto has wet dreams about Jack but that he isn’t with Jack. Ianto and we know otherwise. There is a very small raising of Ianto’s lips into a slight sneer as Owen is speaking. As Owen finishes speaking and dismissing Ianto and Jack as nothing more than a fantasy, Ianto cocks the gun and steps closer to Owen.
Note that the back of his shirt is hanging out.
Owen accuses the Rift of taking his lover. There is no sympathy from Ianto anymore, whereas towards the start of the episode he was empathic towards Owen’s grief.
Owen then adds “and my Captain” and we get a change of expression from Ianto when Jack is mentioned.
Owen uses the word duty as a way of explaining his actions, where purely his motives really are grief and loss. Ianto knows this and he is resolved. They stare at each other, waiting to see who will make the first move.
As Owen stretches forward, Ianto shoots him, and is a little shocked at himself.
But, Owen still manages to activate the Rift Manipulator. Again we get an idea of how upset Ianto is due to his tone of voice as he says “You don’t know what you’ve done.”
Jack and Tosh are returned to them. Ianto is sitting at Tosh’s desk, his clothes still in disarray and he is working while Owen tends to himself and puts on the guilt trip by saying “I knew we did the right thing, opening the Rift.” Ianto tosses him a look.
He goes back to looking at the computer and says that there is still no sign of Bilis.
Owen counters with “the world didn’t end after all, did it? Good job you’re a crap shot”. He gets a rise out of Ianto with an angry retort of “I was aiming for your shoulder.”
Tosh intercedes in the bickering, and Jack wanders past, not acknowledging either man. Owen turns to watch Jack walk into his office and Ianto glances back and forth between Jack and the monitors in front of him.
Ianto in this episode starts to reveal more of himself as the loyal soldier to Jack, the majority of his motivation is what would Jack do, how would Jack want him to act. He is goaded into revealing that he believes that Jack needs him, but is dismissed by Owen who thinks it is all just a fantasy in his mind. None of the team suspect that there is something going on with Jack and Ianto. Ianto also shows how upset he is by his change in body posture and tone of voice, not to mention how disheveled he starts to get as the episode progresses.
