To The Last Man - part a

Our first view of Ianto, is of him very comfortable in Jack’s Office.

Here he is being the cheeky, relaxed young man from Sleeper. He knows something that Gwen doesn’t and is happy to be in on the secret with Jack.

But like all good secrets, the fun is in the telling.

As Jack continues to reveal about Tommy to Gwen, Ianto is happy to follow along and admire Jack.

Like in season one, when Jack’s back is turned Ianto will willingly look at Jack with fondness, revealing how he feels about this man.

As Jack moves, so does Ianto.

Ianto serves up the breakfast for Tommy and note which seat has been left vacant.

Again Ianto knows more than Gwen. Happily discussing past Torchwood members. Ianto would have intimate knowledge of these past members as he is in control of the Archives, but this is an area that Gwen doesn’t know much about. She is often only concerned with the here and now and what affects her job and herself. Ianto likes history and knowing as much as he can about everything.

Gwen makes a comment about Gerald being a bit of an all right and when Ianto points out that he was the leader. Gwen comments, “some things never change.” You can see here, the fondness and friendship between Gwen and Ianto.

Ianto makes the comment that Harriet is also attractive and when Gwen asks what her story was, Ianto brings some reality back to the discussion. He is fatalistic and realistic about working for Torchwood. He knows that it is very likely that they will all die young, like Harriet did at 26.

“Nothing changes.”

note the suit he is wearing though….

Ianto is realistic and accepts the world as it is. Gwen though has a different outlook. Ianto has just told her that she will likely die young, so she springs into action, doing something physical instead of thinking about sad things.

From the website there was mention that Gerald did not cope well with the death of Harriet and as such it was alluded to that they were involved in some way. With the discussion that was just had between Ianto and Gwen where links were made between Torchwood in 1918 and Torchwood now, Ianto could have been linking him dying young and leaving behind a leader to cope with his death, hence his sadness and resignation during this scene.

Gwen is being very ‘Jack’ in her reaction.

But Ianto is resigned to dying young.

One of my favourite images of Ianto. He sees a lot of Jack in Gwen’s reactions to things. This is him understanding and not lecturing or correcting. Just understanding.
