Next time we see Ianto and Jack together, is when the decision has been made to use the mind probe on Beth. Ianto is the one to bring it up from the Archives. Tosh was unaware of the decision to use it until Ianto wheeled it in.
“Remember what happened last time you used it?”
Ianto’s focus is on Jack throughout most of this scene.
“Oh right, their heads must explode all the time.” He looks Jack in the eye at the end of his statement, and Jack has turned to face him as he speaks. He is not taking a backward step in correcting Jack.
Tosh gives Ianto a fond, exasperated look. The kind of look someone might give to a friend who is being childish.
He lets Jack know about his own feelings in relation to the use of the mind probe in his own unique way.
Hmmm, now how did I get out of these last time?
Maybe I should let Jack do this later on…
“Stop at the first sign of exploding”
Jack sends Gwen off to get Beth
He is just too adorable being all ‘zapped’
He is being playful and silly but in his own way he is showing Jack what could go wrong. He isn’t being confrontational in front of the team, but using a different method to communicate with Jack and make Jack think about if he really wants to go ahead with this idea.
Jack then just snaps his fingers and points at him to let him know that he got the message, but to stop it now. Ianto does.
Again Ianto gets given a fond, exasperated look, this time from Owen.
He has gone off to get Beth some water, seemingly of his own volition.
When all the team is in position, Jack and Ianto are directly opposite each other, mirroring each other in their stance. Hands on hips.
Talking about Jack’s bedside manner. Ianto is being very open in front of the rest of the team. Again Jack has to stop him.
What is very interesting is the look on Tosh’s face that they cut to when Gwen says “apparently, so I have heard.” It seems that Ianto has talked about Jack’s bedside manner with initially I thought Tosh, who then passed the gossip onto Gwen. Otherwise, why show Tosh’s reaction to the conversation? And why does she have that expression on her face. But I have had it confirmed that James Moran’s intention was to show that Ianto has talked / gossiped about Jack with Gwen. That they are firm friends and share details of each other’s lives. So those that like to claim that Ianto hates Gwen, the writers intention was never to show this but to show that Ianto and Gwen are close and actually like each other.
Jack then states that he knows who Beth is and why she is here. He looks at Ianto as he says it to toss the scanner to Ianto. He could have put it behind him on the desk, or thrown it to Gwen and Tosh opposite him, but he chooses to throw it at Ianto.
As they finish and Jack turns away, Ianto seems to move at the same time. Mirroring occurring again.
