In the span of about two seconds, many things happened: DG's eyes locked on his and he was certain she could see every though spinning through his head; Her breath caught, because she was certain he could hear her heart racing; and, next to them, an older gentleman spinned his wife just enough that she missed his fingertips and lost her step, which sent her directly for Cain and DG.

Of course, DG and Cain were so focused on each other that they knew every single thing that was happening around them. They let go of each other and stepped back, Cain holding up a hand to stop DG as she reached for the woman. "Gracious," the woman said, rather flustered.

"Are you okay?" DG asked with a slight smile and the woman fanned herself.

"Yes, I think so," she nodded. "I'm so sorry. Must've missed my count," she added with a nervous laugh as her husband moved to her side.

"It's all right," DG nodded. "You sure you're good?" The woman nodded again and gave a nervous smile to Cain. He was now in Tin Man-mode and wouldn't snap out of it until he was certain she had no bumps or bruises and wasn't going to fall over in a faint.

"Sorry, dear," the man said. "I thought my arm was longer than that." The woman snorted a laugh and nodded to Cain and DG. As they moved away, the woman threw a wave to them and DG turned toward Cain with a laugh.

"Well, that's one for the safety patrol." Cain nodded and rubbed a thumb over his forehead. If he were in the Zone, that would be considered a sign of 'not the right time.' While he wasn't in the Zone, he knew enough to listen to his gut. If it was right, it was right... and now was not right.

The band began an upbeat tune and DG bobbed her head. "Care to give it another try, Tin Man?" she asked. Cain breathed another smile and nodded.

Simon groaned at the sight of the woman crashing into Cain and DG. He and Jeanie had returned to the table as the song had ended and now were watching Cain and DG. Well, Simon was watching, anyway. "What?" Jeanie asked.

Simon threw up a hand and stated: "Blew his chance."

Jeanie frowned and glanced down to the floor, where Cain and DG where talking to a woman and her husband. "Who blew what chance?" she asked.

Simon shifted in his chair and looked at his wife. "The young man is trying to tell the girl he loves just that." He waved toward Cain and DG and raised an eyebrow to Jeanie.

She looked down to the two of them and turned back to Simon. "Oh, for the love of Pete," she sighed. "My birthday dinner is their first date?" she asked with a snap. Simon rolled his eyes and sat back in his chair. He knew she wasn't angry, but he let her believe he thought she was.

Pointing over her shoulder, Jeanie offered: "Why don't we just lock them in the coat closet and get it over with?"

Simon's eyes widened and he turned to his wife with a look of surprise. "Have you listened to a single word they've said, woman?" Jeanie glared at him. "She won't get in an elevator and he spent eight years in a box no bigger than my suit. And you want to lock them in a small room?"

Jeanie shook her head and waved. "Simon Napoleon Lowry... don't tell me you actually believe all that rot," she breathed.

"You don't?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "Who would make that up?"

"Everyone tells a story about where they come from, Simon. Makes life a little more exciting," she said with a wave.

"It never changes, Jean." She looked at him. "Their story. It doesn't change. All the little details that can make or break a lie... Look at them," he said, nodding toward Cain and DG. Jeanie turned to watch the two of them and she smiled at the sight of them.

"How long have we known that girl? You really think you would have her over for dinner every week if you didn't trust her?" Jeanie sighed. "And that is the most honest man I've ever met."

"So honest he won't tell her how he feels?" she asked with a smile.

"He's in love, Jean." Simon leaned closer to her. "And so is she. Now," he said quietly. "You look at them and tell me you don't remember what that was like. Hopelessly fallen and nervous as hell..."

Jeanie smiled and turned to Simon. "I do remember," she said, placing a hand on his cheek. "I still say we should lock them in the closet, though." Simon huffed and leaned toward her for a kiss.

"Pee Dee Aae!" DG whispered loudly as she and Cain returned to the table. Simon looked across the table to Cain, who shook his head slightly and moved behind DG, toward his own chair.

"Sorry, darlin'... wasn't gonna last," Simon said with a shrug to DG. She huffed dramatically and smiled, glancing over her shoulder as the band started playing one of the songs from the gala.

Cain looked over as well and caught Jeanie's eyes as he looked back. She gave him a smile and a slight nod and his eyes moved to Simon, who'd suddenly found his spoon very interesting. Sighing, Cain pressed his tongue to his cheek and nodded once.

It was official: the only person on two sides who didn't know how he felt was DG.

"So," Simon started after the waited brought by the dessert. "Big test coming up."

"It's still a month away," Cain said, considering the dish in front of him. He wasn't sure about it, but Jeanie had suggested it, so he figured it was worth a shot. On his left, DG took a bite of her chocolate cake and watched Cain stare at the plate.

She looked up to Simon for a second, who also had the cake, and they both shared a silent chuckle. "Here," she said a second later, passing her cake over and taking his plate. Cain frowned slightly, not wanting to look completely relieved. "I can't believe you got him to order that," DG said to Jeanie, who was laughing behind her napkin.

Cain blinked as the three of them laughed and he nodded. "Ha ha," he said simply and dug into the cake before DG could change her mind.
