"Are you sure we're not supposed to get her anything?" DG called from the bathroom.

Cain pulled his black jacket off the hanger and stepped out of the closet. "Simon said she doesn't want anything and dinner will be her present," he said, moving across the room. He leaned against the door jamb and watched DG pull her hair up and then let it fall again.

She pulled it back up and turned to Cain for a second before looking sideways in the mirror. "Up or down?"

Cain shifted against the frame and a smile slipped across his lips. "Will it change the course of human history?" DG let go of her hair and stared at Cain through the mirror.

"Too much time with Josh," she stated with a forced smile.

"It looks fine, either way," he laughed. That wasn't the answer DG wanted to hear. "Down," he said, pushing off the wall and pulling the jacket over one arm, then the other. He reached around and under the jacket to pull his shirt down in the back and then swung his arms slightly, turning his head from side to side.

DG moved past him, into the bedroom and reached up to fix the back of his collar. "Thanks," he said, turning as she passed. She popped into the closet for a moment to grab her shoes and emerged, stopping at the dresser and pulling one of the top drawers open.

He watched as she pulled out a small silver chain and quickly put the necklace around her neck and pulled at her hair one last time. "Jacket?" Cain asked as DG moved toward the door.

"It's April, Cain."

"You freeze tonight, I'm not giving you mine."

"Yes, you will," she retorted, sticking her tongue out.

"Nope." DG gave him a look and shook her head. She cleared the bedroom door, stopped and turned, ducking under the arm he raised, as he expected her to change her mind. As she reached into the closet for a sweater, Cain just smiled.

"Shut up," DG said, moving back to his side and pushing past him again.

Cain held the door for DG and they stepped out onto the sidewalk to see a very nice car parked across the street, complete with a man in a suit standing at the end of the car. As they crossed the street, Simon and Jeanie appeared from behind the gate and Jeanie waved to DG.

"Happy Birthday," DG said with a smile, pulling Jeanie into a hug.

"Thank you, dear. You all have gone to far too much trouble," she said as DG stepped back and Cain hugged Jeanie.

"Eh, we didn't go to enough," he said with a smile and looked at Simon, then the car.

"What? You wanted to go in the truck?" Simon asked, offering his arm to his wife and nodding to the man in the suit.

"Good evening," the man said with a polite smile to Jeanie, pulling the door open and offering his hand to help her in.

"Thank you, young man," she said, taking his hand and scooting into the car.

Simon waved for DG to get in next then caught Cain's arm. "You sit in the back with the girls. I'm not as skinny as you are," he smiled, patting his stomach a few times. Cain made a face and nodded to the driver and ducked into the car. The driver pushed the door shut and opened the passenger door for Simon. "Thank you, son."

When they arrived at the restaurant, there weren't many people there. Of course, it was a Thursday, and still fairly early. The four of them were shown to a table overlooking a dance floor and the host informed them that the band would be going on stage within the half hour.

"This place is fantastic," DG said, leaning against the table.

"They've changed something since we were here last," Simon stated, looking at the lighting fixtures.

"I believe the walls are a different color," Jeanie offered, skimming the wine list and offering it to Cain. DG glanced up and looked at the walls, which were a yellowish-beige - made even more yellow by the lighting - and most of the trim and fabric was a darker shade of red.

It made her feel like she was sitting in the middle of a Harry Potter book, really.

The waiter came by the table to take the drink orders. "Do you drink white wine, dear?" Jeanie asked DG.

"I'm not much of a wine drinker," she replied, shaking her head. She'd had a glass of wine or champagne at Huntington functions and Zone functions... Of course, other than the very occasional beer, DG hadn't touched alcohol since the great escape.

"Well, I'll have a beer," Simon said with a nod to the waiter. "Wyatt?"

Cain glanced up from the menu and looked at Simon, then back to the menu, then up to the waiter. "Uh... sure. Why not?" He nodded to the waiter and threw a glance to DG.

"Do you have lemonade?" she asked, wanting to get something a little more exciting than water.

"Pink?" the waiter asked.

"Pink is good," DG replied with a smile.

The waiter nodded and pointed to each of them, repeating the drink order. "Lemonade, white wine, house brew?" he asked Simon and Cain. Cain looked from Simon to DG - who nodded - and back to Simon.

"Sounds good to me," Simon nodded, glancing to Cain. Cain nodded as well and glanced back to the menu again.

DG nudged him a moment later with her elbow. "You gonna be okay?" Cain glanced at her. She nodded to the menu and shook her head. "No chili dogs on the menu here."

Cain forced a smile and she grinned. "Funny." Cain could feel Simon's eyes on him but refused to look up to the man. It wasn't that he was nervous... he just wished there was a way to tell DG without having to actually tell her.

"So, DG," Jeanie asked looking away from her menu and across the table. "How is work going?" Cain breathed and bit his lip, dropping his head slightly to hide the smile. There were really far too many choices on the menu and he was certain half of them were far too fancy for his simple tastes.

"It's okay," DG nodded.

"Those two still married?" Simon asked, giving her a slight wave. One of his favorite pastimes was comparing the Engagements section of the paper with the Divorces, seeing how long some couples made it before breaking up, if they got married at all. He and DG had started taking bets at some point and he currently held a record of thirty-two of fifty-four, proclaiming divorce or no wedding, simply from the engagement announcement.

DG smiled and nodded. "That they are... of course," she added, looking to the other side of the menu. "-there's still a week of their honeymoon." Simon laughed and gave his wife a smile as DG leaned over and pointed to an item on Cain's menu. Cain read over the description and reared back, giving DG a look.

She nodded and he shook his head, then reached over and pointed to another dish on her menu. DG looked at the entry and made a face, then glanced up to see Cain grinning. He could play 'find the grossest thing on the menu', too. "Yuck," she said quietly.

"Yuck," he replied with a slight laugh and returned to looking at his menu. A second later, he felt Simon's shoe tap his and his eyes moved up to see Simon nod slightly toward DG. Cain shook his head quickly and Simon nodded again. A moment later, the waiter returned with the drinks and Cain breathed another sigh of relief.

The band went on just after the salads arrived and DG stole a few of Cain's croutons while he was watching the band play. The music was very similar to the kind played at the gala and he nodded after catching DG's eye. She smiled, because he never even noticed the missing croutons.

Due to DG ordering a rather fancy entrée - pasta with a simple oil drizzle, the house specialty - there was still some time between the salads and dinner arriving. Jeanie glanced over to the floor and saw that a few couples were dancing and looked back to her husband. He was, of course, deep into a conversation with DG about the day's engagements and she rolled her eyes.

"Wyatt," she asked a moment later. Simon stopped talking and turned to Jeanie for a moment. "Would you do an old girl a favor and take me for a spin before dinner?" she asked, nodding toward the dance floor.

DG smiled at Simon and Cain nodded. "I think I would love to. Not that this," he said with a wave between Simon and DG. "-isn't riveting, of course." Jeanie laughed and pushed her chair back and Cain pushed his own chair away from the table and moved around DG to help Jeanie up.

"Continue," Jeanie said with a wave toward Simon and DG. Both of them watched as Cain and Jeanie moved down to the dance floor and they smiled.

"Might want to be careful with that one," DG said, nodding toward Cain. "He could steal her away."

Simon made a face and shook his head. "Nah, she's only got eyes for me," Simon waved toward them and glanced at DG for a moment. "And you?" he asked simply.

DG smiled and shifted in her chair. "Well, of course I only have eyes for you, old man. But I'm not gonna tell her that." Simon chuckled and leaned back in his chair.
