DG pressed a kiss to Cain's collarbone and took in a deep breath. Cain smiled into DG's neck and kissed her before pulling back to look her in the eyes. His nose touched hers slightly and they both smiled before Cain leaned forward to kiss DG's lips again.

It was beginning to get dark outside, and they were not going to be able to even see each other soon, but neither wanted to move to turn on the lamp next to the bed. Cain began pressing a trail of kisses along DG's jaw and down her neck, moving across her collarbone and shoulder.

DG bit her lip and smiled as she reached up to scratch her forehead for a second. She needed to tell Cain that she was going back to the Zone. And not because of what they'd just done, but because he needed to know. She didn't want him to think, however, that that was the reason she'd- 'Jumped him?' her brain offered.

"You okay?" DG blinked and looked up to Cain, who was staring down at her with concern. She smiled and nodded. "Why do I get the feeling that isn't true?" he asked with a teasing smile. DG smiled again and looked away for a moment. Her hand moved to his face, tracing the line of his cheek and across his lips.

"I gave my notice at work," she said, focusing on that spot where his collarbones met. Cain breathed out and looked at the pillow for a moment, trying to form a response. "And I should have told you sooner," she added, turning her head so the she was now looking toward the doorway.

"Going back, I realized that-" DG closed her eyes again and sighed. "-that my place is in the Zone. It's time I stopped hiding from what I'm meant to be and started thinking about other people instead of just me."

Cain's hand moved to her neck and he turned her head back. "When do-"

"My last day of work is your last day of class." Cain let out the breath his was holding, but his expression didn't change. "You don’t have to-" DG started to say as her hand moved to Cain's chest.

He caught her hand and pressed it to his chest, in the vicinity of his heart. "I can't stay here unsupervised," he said with a chuckle.

DG gave him a nervous smile but was still concerned by his expression. "You shouldn't have to uproot your life because of me. Not again. You can stay here, if that's what you want. It's okay," she nodded.

He wouldn't stay there without her. And he knew that everyone in their families seemed to be okay with the two of them together, but he wasn't sure about how the people would take it. If DG was going to be Queen, she needed the support of the people. How much support would they give her if she was with a man twice her age?

He didn't regret what had happened between them, but it wasn't going to be able to last. She was adult enough to decide it was time for her to return, he could be adult enough to let her go. Taking a deep breath, Cain nodded and looked back to DG. "We've got three weeks. Plus the last two..."

It was making him sick to say it, but he didn't want to force her into being stuck with him on the other side. She would meet some young man and he would make her happy, giving her lots of little princesses, and he would leave; head for some unknown part of the Zone and suffer through life without her.

"What?" DG asked, looking like she'd just been suckerpunched.

Cain swallowed and looked back to her. "You are going to be Queen," he said slowly and he let go of her hand. As his hand came to rest on her stomach, he continued: "You deserve more than I can give you."

"But I don't want anything," DG said, shaking her head. She just wanted Cain by her side, forever and always. Wasn't that enough? What more could she need?

Cain pressed down on her stomach slightly and his eyes locked on hers. "You deserve the chance to fall in love with someone who can give you a family. I can't."

"I already did," she replied. Cain shook his head and gave her that look.

DG shook her head again, not following him, and Cain huffed. "No, DG. I can't," he said again, slowly and simply. It took a second, but DG realized what he meant and she let out a sigh. Her face fell slightly and her hand moved to his cheek.

"Because of you, I have a family," she said with a sad smile. "Besides," she said with a half-laugh. "Have you met me? On what planet would I be a good mother? Hell, the only reason I remember to eat half the time is because Missus Ell gives me food," she laughed. Cain laughed slightly and DG reached up to him again.

"I want you," she said, taking Cain's face in her hands. "I need you. If the Zone doesn't like it, then I'll give up the throne and we can hold an election and the whole place can go to Hell, for all I care. We can move to the boonies and live in a cabin and never go outside. Or we can come back here and-"

Her ramble was stopped by Cain, who'd leaned down to kiss her. He felt like an idiot for thinking she would be disappointed in him for something he had no control over. But he thought she would want a family of her own. Didn't all girls dream of that? Maybe it was another Other Side thing.

They really needed to start talking to each other.

A laugh from DG made Cain pull away and his eyes narrowed as she tried to fight the smile. She noticed his look and smiled again. "I just had a thought," she said, starting to blush. "Well," she said with a nod toward Cain. "If everything went well..." Cain smiled. "That would make Jeb... heir to the throne," she said slowly, pressing her lips together to fight the grin.

Cain's eyes widen a bit as he considered the information. He nodded slightly and blinked once. Turning to DG, he held a stone face, but she could see the sparkle in his eyes. "Queen Jeb?" DG snorted and her hand flew up to cover her mouth and nose as she laughed more. Cain also laughed and shifted his weight, rolling onto his side and pulling DG to him.

As his fingers interlaced with hers, he pressed a kiss to her shoulder blade. "You know who else would make a good Queen?" Cain asked between kisses. DG turned her head slightly and raised an eyebrow.

"We are not adopting Scooter," DG stated with every ounce of seriousness she could muster.

Even if Scooter-Mike was the biggest drama queen on the planet.
