Cain stared at the simple print of his name on the front of the envelope and his mind wandered to that night, months ago, when he saw DG hide the thing. Looking down to her, Cain bit his cheek and glanced back to the envelope.

He'd only seen the thing for a second, but it was definitely thicker than any of the other envelopes that had been in the trunk. Part of him wanted to open the thing up, right then and there. However, there was another part that knew - his name on it or not - it wasn't his until she gave it to him.

He was going to have to talk to her about the proper way to hide something, that was for sure. '...plain sight...' Well, he hadn't noticed it in months, but he also wasn't usually standing in that exact spot. Still...

A second later, he leaned over and put it back where he'd found it. There must be a reason she hadn't given it to him, and he wasn't going to snoop. He gave DG one last glance and pulled himself away from the bed, pulling her door shut behind him.

It became obvious to Wyatt Cain, the following day, that respect for privacy was over-rated. The moment DG called to tell him she had to stay later at work and he had to fend for himself for dinner, he thought about the letter. When Ron sent everyone home early because he had to drive his daughter's soccer team to a regional championship in Riverside, Cain thought about the letter.

He survived a whopping twenty minutes upon returning to the apartment before he barged into DG's room and snatched the envelope. He stared at it for a good minute before flipping it over and seeing that the thing was actually open. 'That makes it easier,' he thought. She'd not know he opened it if it wasn't sealed.

He moved into the living room and sat down on the couch before pulling out a thick set of pages. Raising an eyebrow, he unfolded them and found a collection of pages in different colors and sizes; he could see the logo from the Huntington on the top of one of the back pages and the back page had the distinct look of palace stationery.

Taking a deep breath, Cain's eyes shot to the door for a moment and he shifted slightly, resting his elbows on his knees, and his eyes went to the first page.

-*-

Hey Cain
Saw these and thought of you.
Hi to Jeb. Hope all's well with you both.
DG

His eyebrow rose, not knowing what she was referring to. He glanced at the lower half of the page and realized she was talking about the book she'd given him that night.

I guess I owe you and explanation, as you can't get these books in the Zone.
And, if you got the books, you probably know I'm not there.
And you're probably pissed.
I'm okay. You don't have to worry.
Really -DG

Cain sighed heavily and flipped the page over, setting it face-down on the cushion next to him.

So, I thought of you at work today. We had a movie hero display up at the museum.
I work at a museum, by the way. The Huntington Library.
Anyway, I was walking through the display and looking at some of the action heroes - if they only knew...
Got to the good ol' guys of the black and white-era and thought of you. No-nonsense guys; guys who don't have to say a lot to be completely awesome.
Guys like you.
Hope all is well. -DG

Cain smiled at this one; he'd caught one or two of these movies thanks to Simon. Those were the movies he liked; the stories were easy to follow and there was a clear distinction of good and bad. And they reminded him of life in Central City.

Happy Birthday.
I went to the bakery across the street. The couple that owns the place are fun. Had a cupcake in your honor.
I wonder if you'd like a cupcake...
Probably not.
Anyway... -DG

Cain laughed again. Simon and Jeanie were most definitely fun. He had actually had a cupcake, thanks to Simon stealing him one from a fresh batch Jeanie had made. It wasn't bad, but it wasn’t great either. The idea of DG imagining him trying a cupcake was entertaining, however.

Today's the 4th of July. Independence Day.
Granted, we didn't escape a witch and potential eternal darkness.
Funny that I'm here, celebrating our freedom from being ruled by a king and I'm expected to be a queen one day.
Irony. -DG
p.s. I wonder what you'd think of hot dogs. This lemonade is better, no offense to the Zone. Fireworks are a little more exciting, too. They can make smiley faces now. And stars and hearts. It's kinda cool.

Cain leaned back against the couch and blinked. They'd had this conversation. His class didn't cover the Revolutionary War, so he had to ask DG about the references during the Civil War-portion. She'd told him about how the colonies wanted to break away from England and the king and he made a comment regarding her lineage.

He'd had a hot dog, and the lemonade was better. She was also correct about the fireworks; he'd seen them on New Years Eve and had been rather impressed.

I missed Jeb's birthday, I think. Please tell him I'm sorry. I don't know what he needs or wants... I'll owe him.
Hope everything's well.
Good here. Had a crisis with the new exhibit: they sent the wrong one. They told me it was "a glitch in the system." I laughed.
Pulled out the princess-lessons and raised some royal Hell.
My boss said I was awesome.
Miss you guys. -DG

Having met Michael... and DG, this was much easier for Cain to picture. He would have loved to have been there to see it, that's for sure. When DG got angry, there was a show. And it was one of his favorites.

The next note was actually on a scrap of Huntington paper, taped to the page:

Season's changed overnight. Had to pull the jacket out - haven't worn it in a while.
Hope you’re good. -DG

Cain sighed again and turned the page over, setting it with the others. His eyes moved to the next page and he did a double-take and sat up.

You're here. Here... in California. On the Other Side.
HERE.
I thought I was losing my mind when I saw you standing there. Where is your hat? That's just weird...
You're here.
You're downstairs right now and I left you there.
Will you be there when I go back downstairs?
Why are you here? How did you find me?
Duh, DG. You're Wyatt Cain. You would find a needle in a haystack just to spite the haystack.
And you would do it well.
You’re here...

Cain stared at the page for nearly two minutes, from the Huntington logo at the top to the letters printed on the page. The other notes she'd written when he was still in the Zone. But, this one... he was walking the grounds of the Huntington with a wrapped sandwich and she was writing him a letter.

They barely spoke the entire day. In her defense, he did drop in unannounced.
