Unexpected Cain breathed slowly and opened his eyes, letting them adjust to the dim light of morning before turning his head. A smile crept across his face as he focused on DG, who was still asleep.
He was very glad to let her sleep for the first time in a while, not counting the night he found the letters. She'd been so busy the last few months - most of which he attributed to the party and her nerves leading up to their trip back to the Zone - but she'd still been rushing upon their return and he knew now that it probably had everything to do with her magic levels.
Cain watched her face, simply taking in every line and freckle and every other detail that made her DG. There was no denying he loved her; how it snuck up on him, however, he still didn't know. But it had. And she loved him.
Lifting his head slightly, Cain glanced at the clock and sighed; he really didn't want to wake her up. Leaning close enough to let her hair brush his cheek, he whispered: "DG." She made the slightest sound and he continued: "It's time to wake up." DG's face scrunched into a frown and she made a rather disapproving sound.
"Why not?" he asked quietly, a smile forming on his lips.
"'cause you won't be here," she murmured.
Cain blinked and glanced away quickly. "Why do you say that?" he asked a moment later, looking back at her and pushing some of her hair away from her face.
"You always go away," she murmured again.
Cain smiled and leaned closer. "Not this time, Kiddo." DG breathed and turned her head toward Cain, still mostly-asleep. He smiled again and pressed the lightest kiss to her forehead, then let his head fall back to the pillow.
About five minutes later, DG winced as she willed herself to stay asleep. She knew it was Sunday, but regardless of the day, she hated this part of the morning. For most of the last month, she'd fallen into the bad habit of imagining Cain was sleeping next to her. She blamed most of this on their visit to the Zone, and it was getting harder for her not to tell him how she felt.
She also had been working too hard, because that had been her most vivid dream yet. Finally giving in, DG sighed heavily and opened her eyes. She froze at the sight of Wyatt Cain's face, mere inches from hers. 'What the-?' she started to ask herself.
As if on cue, one of Cain's eyes opened, then the other. Giving her a slight smirk, he stated: "Told you I'd be here." DG frowned as her brain tried to process all the information.
The beach. The ocean. What he said...
As Cain's hand found hers, she blinked and her breath caught for a moment. "It wasn't a dream?" she asked quietly. Cain smiled and shook his head slightly. DG gasped and launched herself the few inches between them and pressed her lips to his. His arms wrapped around her, hugging her tight.

They stayed in bed for nearly two hours, talking about nothing in particular, at first. For the first time in a very long time, Cain had no problem with hugging, which DG pointed out. At one point, Cain took DG's hand with his left and she realized the ring was gone.
"Where-?" she asked, looking at Cain with concern.
He smiled and squeezed her hand. "I assume it's with my hat." DG looked at him and frowned. "Jeb took it away from me." He proceeded to tell her about the discussion he and Jeb had in the hallway and she giggled.
"He's Robin Hood."
"Mm hmm," Cain said, kissing the side of her head. "Wait," he said, leaning back. "Is that the one with the fox and the bear and the chicken?"
DG laughed again and nodded. "Well, since we're telling stories about the Zone," she started, and told Cain about the conversation she had with Az. Which led to Cain telling her about the whole dream, as well as the discussion with Raw.
She told him about the talk with Sasha - purposefully leaving out the part about the box in the closet - and he told her about the conversation with Simon.
"We are really kinda pathetic, huh?" she asked with a smile.
"Well, maybe not so much 'pathetic' as... okay," he laughed. "Pathetic."
"Hopeless," DG offered.
"Sad?"
"Slow."
"Thick."
"Brainless?" DG asked, looking up to Cain with a smile.
"Blind," he offered, pushing her hair back.
"Dumb."
"Clueless," Cain said with a smile.
DG grinned and nodded. "Indeed." Cain kissed DG again and the looked over to the clock and frowned.
He groaned and dropped his head to the pillow then turned his head to DG. "You know what I want to do?"
"What do you want to do?" DG asked with a smirk.
Cain lifted a hand and pointed toward the living room. "I want to go out there, sit on the couch and watch a movie with you."
DG smiled and turned to face Cain. "Really?" Cain simply nodded. "I'll ask Simon if he has Brigadoon, then."
Cain lifted his head and raised an eyebrow. "I thought I wasn't allowed to watch that until I finished Josh's homework."
DG shook her head. "I'll help you with the homework." Cain smiled and kissed DG again. She looked at him for a moment and her eyes narrowed. "Seriously: Who are you? And where is Wyatt Cain?" Cain smiled and kissed her again.

DG was flipping through the mail from the day before when Cain came out of the bedroom. "I've been meaning to ask you," he started, taking hold of her shoulders and kneeling down slightly. "How are you feeling?"
DG shook her head and smiled. "I'm feeling fine. How are you feeling?" Obviously, she missed something somewhere. She flipped through the last two envelopes and Cain took them from her.
Holding one envelope in his open palm, he nodded to DG. "Take it." DG raised an eyebrow and reached for the envelope, but Cain pulled his hand back. "Not that way," he said, shaking his head.
DG's eyes darted to the counter and nodded once. "Who told you?" Obviously, she could assume it was one of her family members.
"It doesn't matter," he said, placing the envelopes back on the counter and reaching for her hand. "I should have noticed. And I'm sorry that I didn't."
DG looked up to Cain and shook her head. "You shouldn't be sorry. It's not your fault."
"But, as your friend, I should have considered something past you just working too hard."
DG gave him a smile and placed a hand on his cheek. "Look, my whole life - y'know, the part I remember - I didn't have magic. And I got by just fine. And, for a couple days, I had a perk of the job. But it didn't really do me any good, and I didn't have it long enough to miss it. And, unfortunately, it was dormant for so long that, by the time I needed it to help Az, there wasn't anything there.”
She took Cain's hands and nodded again. "You're right: I do work too hard. But I'm really okay." Cain breathed heavily and narrowed his eyes slightly, trying to decide if he believed her or not.
He squeezed her hands and said: "The second that changes, promise you'll tell me."

As they stepped out onto the sidewalk, Cain glanced at his watch. They still had a good hour before they were expected across the street. "We should go for a walk," he announced, looking down the street.
"A walk, huh?" Cain turned back to DG and nodded. "Where would you like to walk to?"
Cain pointed behind him. "We've never gone that way." DG nodded. That was true, as the diner was the other way.
"That way, it is." DG put an arm around Cain and pulled him along. He put an arm around her and they headed down Mission Street to see what they could see.
