The last two days of March and the first two weeks April moved along as they had before the visit to the Zone. Cain saw less of the football team due to projects and classes and barely saw Josh past class. DG felt bad for him, because she knew that he really enjoyed spending time with the guys. And, really, the only time she saw either of them was the few times they'd popped into the library at the Huntington.

The big news, of course, was Cain's test results. They got the tests back the following Tuesday and DG was making dinner when Cain got home that evening. He dropped his bag in the usual spot, moved into the kitchen to get a bottle of water from the fridge and held the paper in front of her as she drained the spaghetti noodles.

"Oh my God, Cain!" she smiled and set the strainer down in the sink and snatched the paper from his hand. He leaned against the counter and opened the bottle of water, smirking as she read over his answers.

"It's not a pass," he shook his head and pointed to the pages with bottle. DG scoffed and continued reading his answers.

"It's a ninety-one, Cain. That's a pass." She shook the pages and bounced in place for a second before spinning around and pulling one of the magnets free from the front of the fridge.

"What are you doing?" Cain asked, making a face as she held the pages up and slapped the magnet back to the fridge. She turned to him with a confused expression and nodded to the test.

"On this side, when you do good... it goes on the fridge. You draw a picture in art class and I'll put it up there, too," she added with a tinge of sarcasm. Taking another look at the test, DG bit her lip and smiled before looking back to Cain. "You know what this means," she said with a nod.

Cain's jaw clenched slightly and a smile slipped free. "You're gonna hug me, aren't you?" DG smiled again and held her arms out. Cain huffed and pushed off the counter, holding his arms open. DG took a step toward him and threw her arms around him.

"You did so good, Cain." She gave him a slight squeeze and pulled back. Throwing up a finger, she nodded once and raised an eyebrow. "Next one better be a hundred." Cain stared at her and breathed a laugh.

Josh rushed in to the lecture hall on Thursday afternoon and nearly dropped the stack of books and papers he hadn't shoved into his bag before leaving his last class. Sitting down next to Cain, Josh gave him a rushed smile and began shoving the stack into the main pocket of his bag. Once everything was in the bag, he reached into another pocket and pulled out his notebook and a pen and sighed heavily before looking at Cain.

"Hi." Cain nodded and scratched at his jaw for a moment before shaking his head. "So, can I ask you a favor?" Cain blinked at looked to Josh again.

"I'm not doing your homework, Josh," Cain said with a grin. Josh made a face and shook his head.

"No. Well, actually-" He shook his head for a second and reached back into his bag, pulling out a DVD. "I have to write a paper for Musicals on a musical." He passed the DVD to Cain and Cain looked at the back of the package then flipped the cover open. "Anyway," Josh said, pointing to the case. "I picked this one because it is awesome, and no one else had picked it yet. I'm just glad I didn’t get stuck with something weird, like Cabaret. Anyway," he said, shaking his head.

"I've seen it about a million times, so my opinion is gonna be slightly biased. I kinda figured, since you've never seen anything," he said sarcastically. "Maybe you would give it a watch and be my focus group. I've got a list of questions, y'know, that I can ask you about 'how you felt' or 'what you think it means', and all that crap."

"Sure," Cain said, looking over the case again. "Is this something I have to watch myself or-" he asked, wondering if DG had seen it.

"Naw, Dee loves this one. Actually, might come in handy for the 'seen it a million times', 'seen it never' and 'seen it enough'," Josh nodded. "You sure?" Cain nodded again and glanced up as the professor began passing out a stack of papers. Josh tapped his arm and pointed to the DVD with his pen.

"Dude, Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse dancing... It's like sex. With music." Cain raised and eyebrow and Josh nodded.

Cain was about ten minutes into the movie when DG came home from work. She walked is as the music was playing over the montage of Don's stunts and she dropped her bag in the doorway and looked to Cain.

"You're watching Singin' in the Rain without me?" she gasped just before the voice-over began. Cain raised an eyebrow and leaned forward for the remote and paused it.

"You got that from the music?" he asked, not sure if he should be impressed or afraid. DG took the few steps between the door and the couch and plopped down next to Cain.

"Will you start it again?" She gave him that wide-eyed, lost puppy look and his eyes narrowed. "Please? It's like... ten minutes," she shrugged. Cain huffed and handed her the remote.

The movie began again and DG kicked off her shoes. A few minutes in, she jumped up and moved to the kitchen for a drink. She smiled at the sight of Cain watching the first dance sequence - his eyes were glued to the screen, following the motions of Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor.

When Lena started talking, Cain actually flinched, which made her laugh. She tried to force herself not to quote the movie or poke him and say 'Hey, watch this.' It was a lot harder than she expected. Cain laughed at the comment about Lena not getting a hint; it reminded him of trying to avoid Diana three weeks before.

DG excused herself for a few minutes to change out of her work clothes and came back into the living room when Cain yelled: "Glitch!" DG looked at him with a raised eyebrow and looked around the room, expecting to see their friend standing there. "He's Glitch," Cain nodded, pointing to Donald O'Connor, then went back to watching the movie.

DG nodded and shook her head and she moved back to her seat on the couch. Cain jumped at the sight of the vehicles and pointed to the screen, but said nothing. He knew the movie wasn't filmed in the Zone, but it sure looked like the streets of Central City. The clothes were different, of course.

"She's sixteen," DG said a few minutes later, pointing to the screen. Cain made a face and shook his head. "Yes," DG nodded. "When they filmed this movie, she was sixteen."

"He's probably my age," Cain replied, pointing to the screen.

"Probably. What’s you point?" Cain looked from the screen to DG and back again.

When it got to the floor show, DG nudged Cain. "That the kind of dancing you're used to, Tin Man?" He gave her a dirty look and shook his head, focusing on the screen. He had to pause the movie for a minute to stop laughing when Lena got hit in the face with the cake.

DG laughed, knowing which scene was coming up and tapped Cain's knee. "You thought Cosmo was Glitch before-" She pointed to the screen and tried not to watch Cain watch the scene. He turned to DG with an open mouth when Cosmo ran up the painted wall, but said nothing and turned back to the screen.

DG just smiled.

When the montage of the talking pictures began, Cain's eyes went wide and he slowly turned to DG. She smiled again and shrugged. She was most entertained by the faces he made at the clothes in the 'Beautiful Girls' montage.

"Please tell me those never hit the Zone," DG asked, grimacing slightly. Cain shook his head.

"Not that I ever recall," he said, eyes still on the TV. "That one's not bad," he said a moment later, pointing to Kathy's purple dress. DG nodded.

"I like that one. And her pink one at the end." DG looked back to the screen and smiled at the rest of the scene. Cain half-watched the scene and half-watched DG, intrigued by the look on her face. He was going to have to watch this one a few times to be of any use to Josh, that much he knew.

Both of them sat through the musical number in complete silence, each considering the irony of the song with their respective feelings. The diction scene started up and DG forgot she wasn't quoting the movie, which made Cain laugh. As the scene changed, DG ignored her own rule and smacked Cain's arm.

"Best scene in the history of ever," she nodded and pointed to the screen. Cain watched DG - her eyes were glued to the screen and she whispered every word with Cosmo and Don. He noticed that her breath caught as they jumped up on the desk and he wanted to keep watching her, but he was completely sucked into the screen.

He'd never seen anyone move like that... and at the same time, no less.

____________
I admit that Josh and DG's biases toward Singin' in the Rain are actually my own.
You'll deal. Or not.
