The morning of the final exam, Cain found DG in the kitchen, staring at the fridge. He placed a hand on her arm and narrowed his eyes slightly. "Morning," she said with a nod and shook her head slightly. "Sorry," she said with a laugh. "Kinda zoned there for a second."

"You okay?" Cain asked, reaching for the plated pecan roll sitting on the counter.

"Yeah, just trying to remember everything I have to do today," she said, giving him a grin. Cain took a deep breath and his eyes moved away, but she saw the look. "You are going to do just fine, Tin Man," she assured him, giving his arm a squeeze.

"I am, huh?" he asked with a smile and pulled her into a hug. "And how do you know that?"

"Because I know you," she said simply. He smiled again and pressed a kiss into her hair and dropped his hand slightly.

"You best get a move on, Princess. You're going to be late for your last day of work," he said with a smirk and gave her a slight pat on the rear.

"Yeah, yeah," she said with a wave and moved around the counter as he moved to the cupboard for a glass.

"Well, that wasn't so bad," Josh said as he and Cain stepped out of the lecture hall and headed for the main entrance.

"Did she even cover question four?" Cain asked, raising an eyebrow and frowning.

"No," Josh snorted.

"Well, I guess it pays to read the book," Cain mused as they reached the door. Josh saw DG first and sighed; the football team had a big goodbye for Cain on Tuesday, but he was still in denial about the whole thing. He tapped Cain's elbow with his and nodded to DG and they both gave her a wave.

"So?" she asked. Cain shrugged and Josh shook his head.

"It was okay," Josh said, giving her a grin.

"You know you aced it," she said, giving him a dirty look which became a smile when she started laughing.

Josh threw a look between his two best friends and took a deep breath. "So this is it," he said with a single nod. Cain looked down to the sidewalk and DG forced a smile.

Cain pulled Josh into a hug and slapped him on the back. "You take care of yourself, kid." He let go and DG stepped over to hug Josh.

"You promised you would come back for a visit," Josh reminded her.

"Absolutely," DG nodded. She ran a hand along the side of Josh's face and inhaled sharply. "I'm gonna miss you, Gilligan," she said quietly.

"I'm not Gilligan," he said with a pout and pointed to her. "I'm the Professor." DG laughed and hugged him again. "You're square?" he asked Cain, nodding to the building behind them.

"Paid in full and address changed," Cain replied. All correspondence from the school would go to Simon and Jeanie, the few bills DG had had been dealt with appropriately and a few boxes had been moved across the street because Jeanie refused to let DG get rid of the items.

"Still leaving tomorrow?" Josh asked, glancing down to DG with a pout. She gave him a smile and planted a kiss on his cheek. He gave them both a heavy sigh and took a step back. "This still sucks," he said with a nod.

"Totally," DG agreed, also with a nod.

"But you gotta do what you gotta do, right?" The three of them shared another smile and Josh looked at his watch. "Crap." He looked up to them again and shrugged. "Got another test in twenty." As he started to back away, Josh threw his hand up again. "I swear: you don't come back, I will find you."

DG stuck her tongue out and Cain just shook his head. They both gave Josh a wave and he turned, hurrying down the sidewalk and disappearing into the sea of students. Cain took another look at the campus and turned to DG.

"The landlord would let us stay a couple more days if you want to," she nodded. Cain gave her a slight smile and shook his head.

He put an arm around her and pulled her to him. "Let's go home."

She nodded and they turned. "Walk or bus?" she asked. Either way, they would get to the same place. Cain sighed and took in the activity in the vicinity. He'd gotten so used to it after six months that he wondered if he would miss it at all.

"Let's walk," he suggested. DG smiled and her hand found his. "That went better than I thought it would," he offered a few minutes later. When DG looked up with a raised eyebrow, Cain nodded back toward the campus. "After the production you two made two weeks ago," he suggested.

DG bit her lip and smiled. She and Josh had turned in Oscar-worthy performances in the epic argument of why Josh couldn't go to the Zone. As she watched a sleek, red sportscar drive past, DG nodded slightly. "Y'know, there's really no reason Josh couldn't come visit."

Cain snorted and nodded. "You're clearing it with his mother." She nodded and they continued down the sidewalk. Both of them knew that saying goodbye to Simon and Jeanie was going to be much more difficult.
