Unexpected "You all right, boy?" Simon asked, moving over to Cain. Cain looked away from the window and up to Simon, who was holding out a fresh cup of coffee. Cain didn't respond, but looked again to the window. "Girl troubles, I'm guessing," Simon sighed and pulled out the chair across from Cain and sat down.
"Been there myself." Cain smiled slightly and glanced back to the older man. "Still haven't told her, have you?" Cain frowned slightly, not sure what Simon meant. Actually, he knew exactly what Simon meant. He just didn't want Simon to know that.
"Boy, you can't fool me. I know you've got feelings for her." Cain said nothing, focusing his gaze on the coffee. "What I can't figure, is what's keeping you from saying it," he added, uncrossing his arms and leaning forward against the table.
"Unless you think she doesn't feel-" he said with a frown. He'd seen the look on DG's face before; how could Wyatt not see it?
"That's just it," Cain said quietly, glancing up to Simon. "She does." Simon blinked.
"She told you?" he asked, wishing he'd been there to see it. Cain shook his head.
"Not exactly." Cain told Simon about the letters. "-and her mother practically gave me her blessing, which was weird enough."
"So she loves you and you love her?" Simon asked, wanting to clarify the discussion.
"It would appear so," Cain said with a nod.
"Well, then," Simon said, leaning back with a wide grin. "Looks like we need to find you the perfect setting." Cain blinked and stared at Simon, partly wondering if he'd intentionally quoted Singin' in the Rain and partly surprised he was okay with the news. Cain had expected at least a comment about the age difference.
"I'm nearly ten years older than her, Simon." And that was just because of the suit. Technically, he was closer to twenty.
"Jeanie's got eight years on me," Simon said with a nod. "Age ain't nothin' but a number," he added with a shrug. Cain actually looked toward the door to the kitchen, trying to picture Jeanie plus eight years.
"So, this age gap is what's stopping you?" Simon asked, waving a hand in the air.
Cain shrugged. "Just doesn't seem like the kind of thing to say over the dishes. And I don't want her settling on me. There's... stuff," Cain said with a sigh and glanced at the table.
Simon nodded. "You're worried about kids? Bein' an old man when they hit Kindergarten?" Simon asked with a laugh. It took him a second to realize Cain wasn't laughing.
Cain leaned forward and rested his elbows on the table. "She's in line to be Queen; the people will expect an heir..." Simon noticed Cain's gaze move back to the table and he realized why Cain was holding back.
"You can't have kids," Simon said quietly. Cain breathed deeply but didn't look up.
"Effect of the suit. Gain eight years-" he started and finally looked up to Simon. "She can do better than me, Simon. She deserves better."
"But it's you she loves," Simon pointed out.
"Only because I'm always there. If I hadn't shown up, hung around..."
Simon snorted. "I saw her the day before you showed up, and then after your little hike. And every day since. She wouldn't notice another man in a hundred miles. That girl is yours, Wyatt, your honor be damned." Simon leaned back again and scratched his head.
"Besides, add a few years and a set of rings," he said with a wave. "You two are me and Jean." Cain couldn't not smile, as Josh was constantly referring to them as an old, married couple. "What's your boy say?" Simon asked, glancing to the lighter skin on Cain's left hand.
"He told me to stop making excuses," Cain said, holding up his hand slightly. "He took the ring."
"I noticed it was gone when you came back," Simon said. "'course, neither of you changed habit, so I was beginning to wonder."
"I don't think she even knows it's gone," Cain said with a laugh, shifting in his chair.
"Well, you two are so obvious to everyone but each other, I'm amazed either of you can get dressed without help," Simon said with a grin. Cain gave him a forced grin in response. "All right, what we need is a plan," Simon said, leaning forward again.
“A plan?" Cain asked, raising an eyebrow.
"To get you two to the right spot so you can tell her and stop driving us all crazy with the 'when already?'" Simon smiled. Cain could only smile. "Jean's birthday is Thursday. Usually, we just have dinner at home. How 'bout I tell her you and DG want to do something - the four of us - and we'll go out? My treat."
Cain shook his head. "No, Simon. We shouldn't go along on her birthday. That's your time."
Simon threw up a hand. "Every day is my time. She'll love it. We haven't gone out in a while, anyway. We'll go someplace with dancing, she likes to dance. You like jazz? We'll figure it out," he rattled off and waved to Cain. "Just tell DG it’s for Jeanie."
"We split the bill," Cain demanded. Simon wanted to protest, but if it would finally get the two of them together, he could accept the deal.
Reaching across the table, Simon offered his hand to Cain. "Deal."
-*-
DG could see Cain through the window of the bakery as she crossed the street from the bus stop. Glancing both ways, she stayed closer to the wall and stuck her head in the open door. "What are you guys talking about in here?" she asked.
Simon turned in his chair and gave her a big grin and Cain smiled and waved as he reached for his coffee mug. "We were talkin' about you, actually," Simon said as he stood up to give DG a hug.
Cain nearly choked on his coffee and threw a glare to Simon as DG looked at him. "Talkin' about me, huh? Why?"
"We were wondering what kind of music you like," Simon said a moment later, nodding toward Cain.
"Music? I like all kinds of music. May I sit here?" she asked with a slight snap, pointing to the chair between them. Simon held a hand out to the chair and Cain smiled, knowing it probably had something to do with the wedding drama.
"They married?" he asked as she sat. DG nodded and reached for his coffee, giving it a sniff before she took a sip.
"They are. Thank God." She passed Cain's coffee back and raised a hand to Simon, who was starting to stand up to get her a fresh cup. "So, why music?" she asked again, glancing between the men.
"Jeanie's birthday is on Thursday and we're going out," Cain said quickly, throwing another look to Simon. DG looked at Simon and he nodded.
"Then shouldn't you be thinking about music she likes?" DG asked, cocking her head to one side. Cain looked at Simon and raised an eyebrow before reaching for his coffee again.
Simon shifted in his seat and threw a glance over his shoulder and leaned against the table. "There's a jazz place we used to go to... dinner, dancing. What do you say?"
Cain looked at DG and she nodded to him. "Party music."
"Oh, definitely," Cain nodded.
DG rubbed her forehead lightly and nodded. "Count me in."
"You feelin' any better?" Cain asked.
DG turned to him and smiled. "Much. Thank you."
"You feelin' under the weather, darlin'?" Simon asked with a frown.
DG turned to him and shrugged. "Had a pretty rough migrane yesterday. But, I'm feeling much better now." Simon frowned and Cain made a face then wagged a finger at DG. She shook her head but knew better than to argue with either of them. She leaned toward Cain, who leaned toward her, and his hand moved to her forehead.
"Better," he said with a single nod and sat back in his chair. Cain and Simon's eyes locked for a second and, while Simon's expression was blank, Cain could see the look in the older man's eyes.
