This is a rather simple touristy photo, and not one of my best either, but one that holds a lot of memories for me. For about a year and a half, in 2004 and 2005, I lived in Paris. Finding an apartment there was one of the hardest things I have ever done (so far it has only been trumped by the impossible difficulty of finding a job in recession-era London). When I eventually managed to score a little studio-flat of my own it was in the ninth quartier, a short walk under Montmartre.

When walking home from the Grandes Boulevards this was one of my views: the heavy classicist building of my local church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Lorette below with the whimsical white confection of the basilica of Sacre-Coeur looming behind it from its hill. I kept on telling myself I needed to take a good photo of this view, and I kept on putting it off until all I had in the end was this quick snap.

The view at night was even more magical, because everything else was dark except for the lit churches that seemed to glow and hover magically in the air. I will never forgive myself for never taking a night time photograph.
