I have always lived near water of some kind. I would probably feel the distinct lack of it if I ever lived in a city that didn't have any. Athens and Thessaloniki had their seafronts and Paris and London had their rivers. Rivers are not quite the same as the sea, granted, but when they are as big and their shores as interesting as the Seine or Thames they make a pretty good substitute.
The Thames in particular is a rather funny river. It changes quite a bit along the length of it, and while it doesn't have a fancy pedestrian pathway low down along it's bank like the Seine, it does have sandy and pebbly beaches at places where you can listen to the lapping of the waves.
These two photos were taken on either side of Tower Bridge. Is it me, or do the two locations feel quite different despite being so close?
