I spent quite a number of years living in Thessaloniki. It's a beautifully sized city, but I'm a big city girl and I have the bug of big cities - complete with alienation and giant distances - so I left. In any case, it's a port city. Most greek cities are port cities.
Thessaloniki has a nice long - very very long if you actually do the whole thing - seafront promenade, starting from the passenger port proper and passing through all sorts of land-marks and central squares and meeting points and going out and out passing by parks and more landmarks and important buildings. The port, and the sea front promenade, and always full of people doing all sorts of things. And one of those things is fishing.
