Disclaimer: As the World Turns and it's characters are not mine, no matter how much I enjoy playing with them. :)
Summary: Luke is in car accident on the way home from a business trip. Reid saves him in more ways than one.
Author's Notes: So, this was sort of inspired by
sripley's "It's the What If Factor." I was re-reading it, reveling in her ability to change up the story so awesomely and still keep it true to the characters, and thought to myself, I can do that. So this is me trying another take on the the Luke/Reid relationship with a different beginning, and we'll see where we end up. Story starts in January 2010. If it isn't said enough, the medical stuff I am making up as I go.
You guys....I just love you guys. All of your comments are awesome!

26 Luke let himself into the house, hoping his mother was not around. He knew the kids would already be off to school. The last thing he wanted was a replay of yesterday.
“Luke?” He heard her call, and sighed.
“Yeah.” Luke called back. His mother strode into the living room. She crossed the room in three strides and hugged him. It took him a second, but he hugged her back.
No matter what, he did love her.
“I’m sorry I just ran out last night.” He apologized, pulling back.
“I’m sorry too, Honey.” Lily said. “The last thing I wanted was to upset you.”
“I know you were angry about what you walked in on, Mom.”
“Well, I really wish your brother and sisters hadn’t seen it.”
“Me too.” Luke gave her a half-smile. Maybe this would be okay. He moved and sat down on the couch. She followed him, sitting down next to Luke and taking his hand.
“We need to talk about you and Dr. Oliver. I really want you to think about this, Luke.” His mother began. He sighed. Of course.
“Mom…” He protested.
“No, please, Honey, just listen to me for a second.”
“Fine.” Luke agreed. “But don’t count on changing my mind.”
“You’re going through such a rough time, with your accident and your memory loss,” Lily started. “And I know your grateful Dr. Oliver. We all are.”
“Mom, what I feel is more than just gratitude.” Luke replied. “Of course I’m grateful. He’s saved my life so many times now. God, Mom, if it wasn’t for him I would have gone crazy.”
“That’s what I’m trying to say, Sweetheart.” Lily interrupted. “I think with everything you’re just confused.”
“But I’m not, Mom.” Luke was getting a little annoyed.
“Are you sure about that?”
“Yes.” Luke shifted on the couch, taking off his coat. His t-shirt stuck to the lining of his coat and his neck was exposed for a second. Long enough.
“Luke!” Lily exclaimed, turning his head so she could see the marks on his neck better.
“Mom, please.” He pulled out of her grasp. “It’s none of your business.”
“You are my business.” She paused. “What about Noah?”
“What about him? We broke up.” Luke reminded her. “Before my accident. He’s done nothing but lie to me since I woke up.”
“Honey, he cares about you.”
“He’s got a fantastic way of showing it.”
“Luke, I just…I wish you’d give it some more thought.” Lily put her hand on her son’s arm. “I don’t think that Dr. Oliver’s the right guy for you. He’s just taking advantage of your situation.”
“He’s not taking advantage of anything, Mom.” Luke denied. “I went after him.” He sighed again. “Look, Mom, I said I’d hear you out, and I did. You didn’t change my mind. I want to be with Reid, and that’s what I’m going to do.”
A knock at the door interrupted them.
“I’ll get it.” Luke stalked to the door, and pulled it open. “Noah?” He said, startled to see his ex on the front porch.
“Luke?” Noah looked surprised. “I didn’t think you’d be here.” Luke cast a glance at his mother.
“Yeah, I’m going into the foundation late today.”
“Oh.” Noah looked uncomfortable. “Listen, I just really came to get the rest of my stuff from your room.”
“Sure.” Luke replied, letting him in. “I have no idea what’s yours or mine, so I guess…”
“I know where it is. Hi, Lily.” Noah greeted.
“Hi, Noah.” Lily got up. “I’m going to let you two talk.” She disappeared into the other room.
“I guess I’ll just…” Noah gestured to the hallway awkwardly.
“Yeah.” Luke replied, just as awkward.
*
“Did you find everything?” Luke appeared in the doorway to his room, holding a box. Noah had piled a few things on the bed.
“A few.” Noah answered, taking the box from Luke’s hands. He started stacking his stuff inside, a sweater, a few DVDs.
“Listen.” Luke began. “I watched the DVD you made it. It was great.”
“I’m glad.” Noah smiled a little. “We had some good times.”
“I saw that.”
“Listen, Luke.” Noah turned and looked at him. “About what happened at Yo’s. I’m sorry.”
“I know.” Luke replied. “It’s forgotten.”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Sure.” Luke sat down on the edge of the bed.
“I saw you and Dr. Oliver that night…after I kissed you.”
“Oh.” Luke studied the pattern on his bedspread with interest.
“So you are seeing him.”
“Yes.” Noah gave him a hard look and then nodded. He walked over to Luke’s desk and glanced through the stack of CDs, taking one and putting it in the box.
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?”
“Noah, you don’t really get a say.”
“Relax, Luke.” Noah sat down across from him on the bed. “I’m not about to beg you take me back.” He sighed. “You’ve made it pretty clear you’re not interested.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be sorry.” Noah dismissed his apology. “I just want you to be sure he’s what you want. He was your doctor, Luke. Isn’t he violating some kind of ethical code or something by getting involved with you?”
“He’s not my doctor anymore, and no he’s not.” Luke answered, angry.
“Hey, I was just asking.” Noah said.
“My mom’s been spouting the same line. I guess I’m a little on edge.”
“So, Lily’s not a fan of ‘the great Dr. Oliver’?”
“Not so much, no.” Luke told him. Noah got up and picked up his box of stuff.
“Just…think about it, Luke. Make sure he’s what you really want.”
“He is.” Noah nodded after a moment, before turning and walking out.
Luke got up, trying to keep his anger in check. He needed to find his mother.
*
“Did you plan that?” Luke demanded, busting into his mother’s home office. She did a lot of foundation stuff there.
“Plan what?”
“Don’t give me that.” Luke snapped. “You ambush me when I get home, tell me that I’m letting myself be manipulated by Reid, and then Noah just ‘drops by’?” He exclaimed.
“It was a coincidence, Honey, honest.” Lily put down the documents she was working on.
“Mom, I love you, but you can’t keep interfering in my life.”
“You’re my son, Luke.”
“I know that, but I’m old enough to decide what I want.”
“And you want forever with Reid Oliver?” She asked, and Luke paused.
“I…I don’t know.” Luke answered, startled by the question. “Maybe.”
“Oh, Luke.” Lily got up, and approached him.
“Don’t Mom.” He warned. “Seriously, just stay out of it.”
“I can’t do that, Luke. I love you too much to watch Dr. Oliver hurt you like this.”
“He’s not the one hurting me, Mom, you are.”
“I know it feels that way, but…”
“You know what?” Luke shouted, startling her. “I’m done. I’m done here.”
“Luke, what are you saying?”
“I can’t be around you when you’re like this.”
He turned and walked out.
*
Luke supposed he could have gone to his Grandma’s farm or even the Lakeview when he left his mother’s house.
He didn’t because his mother had easy access to both of those places. Luke needed some distance from her at the moment, and her unyielding insistence that this thing with Reid was all a lie.
He knew better.
It only took him a second to work up the courage to knock on Reid and Katie’s door, an overnight bag in hand. He was still angry with his mother, and his hands trembled. The door opened, and then Reid was standing there.
“Luke?”
“I didn’t know where else to go.” Luke managed to say.
