Title: Fate
Author: slayerkitty
Genre: Romance, Angst, AU
Rating: PG-13 for language (For now, rating may be upped later.)
Characters: Luke/Reid
Disclaimer: As the World Turns and it's characters are not mine, no matter how much I enjoy playing with them. :)
Summary: Luke is in car accident on the way home from a business trip. Reid saves him in more ways than one.

Author's Notes: So, this was sort of inspired by sripley's "It's the What If Factor." I was re-reading it, reveling in her ability to change up the story so awesomely and still keep it true to the characters, and thought to myself, I can do that. So this is me trying another take on the the Luke/Reid relationship with a different beginning, and we'll see where we end up. Story starts in January 2010. If it isn't said enough, the medical stuff I am making up as I go.

You guys....I just love you guys. This is the chapter you've been waiting for. :) Hope I did it justice.

Luke headed downstairs after a few more minutes to himself. He wanted to give Noah time to leave and avoid any awkwardness.

He came across his mother at the base of the stairwell, looking like she was just getting ready to come up and search for him.

“There you are, honey.” She said. He glanced out into the living room.

“Everyone gone?”

“Just about.” Lily answered, smiling. “Did Dr. Oliver find you?”

“What? No.” Luke replied, confused. “What are you talking about?”

“He went upstairs to find you before he left.” Lily said, concerned now. “You didn’t see him?”

Luke shook his head, his stomach dropping. No, he hadn’t seen Reid. There was a damn good chance, however, that Reid had seen him…with Noah.

*

Reid paid no attention as he threw his clothes back into his suitcase. It didn't really matter to him if his clothes were wrinkled, if his socks were matched.

He had to get out of here.

Out of this hellhole.

He'd been crazy to even entertain the idea of staying, but that's what he'd done. He'd gone upstairs to talk to Luke, to tell him maybe. Maybe he would stay.

But Luke had been with Noah.

His cell phone was pressed to his ear as he zipped his suitcase closed with one hand.

“I don't care what you have to do, just get me on a flight out of here tonight!” Reid shouted into the phone, glancing around frantically to make sure he had everything. “Yes, that's fine.” He snapped the phone shut, sliding it in his pocket.

He picked up his suitcase and went into the living room.

Reid paused, and then sighed. Running a hand over his face, he pulled his phone back out, and sent a quick text message to Katie. She'd be pissed that he was leaving without saying good-bye.
He didn't care. He just had to get out.

*

Fighting the urge to panic, Luke brushed past his mother and went into the living room. Holden was just letting Katie in.

“Katie.” Luke hurried over to her.

“Hi, Luke.” She said, looking happy. “Is Reid still here?”

“No.” Luke answered, upset. “You haven’t talked to him?”

“Not yet.” Katie replied. “And I have some really good news.”

Just then her phone beeped.

“Maybe that’s him.” Luke said, as she checked her phone.

“It is.” Katie pushed the button to open her text message.

Katie,

Managed to get moved to flight out tonight. Will miss you. Hug Jacob for me.

“What?!” Katie exclaimed. “No!”

“What is it?”

“He’s leaving tonight.” She snapped her phone shut. “I have to stop him.” She looked at Luke. “Bob Hughes is going to make him an offer to stay here and run a brand new Neurology wing.”

“You’re kidding?”

“I have to go.” Katie whirled around and opened the door. Lily and Holden were still standing there, dumbfounded by their frantic conversation.

“I’m coming with you.” Luke said, startling everyone.

“Luke, are you sure you should get in the middle of this?” Lily tried to stop him. “You just got home from the hospital.”

“Mom, you have no idea.” Luke answered. “Let’s go.” He told Katie, grabbing his jacket and following her out.

*

Katie tore in through her front door, Luke on her heels. Reid was standing in the living room, suitcase in his hands.

His mouth dropped open in shock at their entrance.

“Did you break a land speed record getting here?” He finally asked, looking from Katie to Luke and back.

“I had to stop you.” Katie said, taking the suitcase from Reid’s hand and setting it down on the couch. She took both of his hands in hers. “Do you remember what we talked about the other day? About what it would take for you to stay?”

“Katie…” Reid protested.

“I talked to Bob Hughes and I talked to Henry, and I think I’ve got it worked out.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Henry is going to donate his inheritance to the hospital to build a new neurological wing in Brad’s memory.” Katie had an earnest expression on her face. “They want you to run it.”

“You’re kidding?” Reid was shocked.

“I believe that’s what you said it would take for you to stay.” Katie smiled. Reid smiled back at her for a half second, and then glanced at Luke. The blond was just standing there, hands in his pockets, looking hopeful. Reid’s expression fell, and he backed away from Katie.

“I can’t, Katie.”

“What? Why not?” She cried.

“Reid, don’t be stupid.” Luke finally spoke up.

“I don’t recall asking you, Mr. Snyder.” Luke looked upset at that.

“Don’t call me that.”

“You’re not my patient anymore.”

“Don’t throw away this opportunity because of me.” Luke moved closer. Katie was clearly startled, but kept silent.

“This has nothing to do with you.” Luke laughed a little at that.

“This has everything to do with me.” He said. “At least admit that much.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.” Reid denied. Luke sighed.

“Katie, could you give us a minute?” Luke asked.

“Yeah.” She agreed, looking back and forth between the two men.

“Katie…” Reid trailed off, trying to stop her, but she had left the room.

“Swear this is not about me, and I’ll go.” Luke said simply, taking another step closer.

“It’s not about you.” Reid’s voice was monotone and he was looking everywhere but right at Luke. Maybe that was how he failed to notice exactly how close Luke had gotten.

“Reid?” Luke whispered his name, and Reid finally looked at him. Luke was standing in front of him.

“What?” Reid blinked at him, unable to catch his breath.

“Shut up.” He said, raising his hand up and sliding it along the side of Reid’s neck. Slowly, his eyes never looking away, Luke leaned forward and touched his lips lightly to Reid’s. It lasted a brief second, and then Luke reached up with his fingers to play with the hair at the nape of Reid’s neck.

“Stay.” Luke asked quietly. His eyes searched Reid’s face, looking for an answer.
