Title: Fate
Author: slayerkitty
Genre: Romance, Angst, AU
Rating: PG-13 for language (For now, rating may be upped later.)
Characters: Luke/Reid
Disclaimer:  As the World Turns and it's characters are not mine, no matter how much I enjoy playing with them.  :)
Summary:  Luke is in car accident on the way home from a business trip.  Reid saves him in more ways than one.

Author's Notes: So, this was sort of inspired by sripley's "It's the What If Factor."  I was re-reading it, reveling in her ability to change up the story so awesomely and still keep it true to the characters, and thought to myself, I can do that.  So this is me trying another take on the the Luke/Reid relationship with a different beginning, and we'll see where we end up.   Story starts in January 2010.  If it isn't said enough, the medical stuff I am making up as I go.

You guys....I just love you guys.  Thank you so much for all of your comments.   Please keep in mind when reading this that I've only had two hours of sleep.  Any and all mistakes are definitely mine and please don't hesitate to point them out so I can fix them. :)

“You ready for lunch?”

Luke opened his eyes, upset that he’d fallen asleep again, to see a well muscled blond man in the doorway.

“Definitely.” Luke said, smiling.

“I’m Casey.” He introduced himself, coming farther in with a lunch tray in his hands.

“Allison’s fiancé.”

“That’s me” Casey smiled. “I came to visit after your surgery, but you were out of it. Sorry I haven’t made it before now.”

“That’s okay.” Luke replied. “I’ve had plenty of company.”

“I’ll bet.” Casey set his lunch on the wheeled table in the room and pushed it across Luke’s lap. Luke stared down at the food, and tentatively picked up the sandwich. Grilled cheese.

He took a bite, and nearly moaned with delight.

Luke had no idea if he’d liked grilled cheese before, but this was positively heaven.

Before he knew it, he’d polished off his entire lunch - grilled cheese, tomato soup, and a small salad.

“That was the best thing ever.” Luke said, as he finished up. Casey had kept him entertained with small talk, and complaints about his upcoming wedding while he ate.

There was a knock on the open door. Noah was standing there, smiling a little. He was holding a single red rose in his hand.

“Well, that’s my cue.” Casey got up, looking uncomfortable. He grabbed Luke’s empty tray and promised to come back and visit soon.

“Hi.” Noah said, sitting down in the chair. He handed the rose to Luke. Luke took it, blushing.

“Thank you.” He told Noah, his voice quiet.

“How are you?” Noah asked.

“Okay.” Luke answered. He was tired of everyone asking him that.

“They finally let you have some real food.” Noah commented.

“Yeah.”

There weren’t enough ways to describe the awkwardness, as Luke laid the rose on his bedside table and looked at everything else except Noah.

“That’s good.” He said. “Because your Grandma Emma just happened to send you some of your favorite cookies.”

“Oatmeal Raisin?” Luke turned to look at him now.

“Yeah.” Noah replied, getting the cookies out while staring at him. “How did you know that?”

“I just…did.” Luke answered, reaching out to take the bag of cookies from Noah with shaking fingers.

“Have you remembered anything else?”

“No.” Luke paused. “Well, not exactly.” He told Noah about the incident with the wheelchair.

“That doesn't surprise me.” Noah said, reaching out and taking his hand. “You hated being in the wheelchair.” He smiled at Luke. “We worked on your physical therapy every day. I've never seen anyone so determined.” Noah cleared his throat. “It's one of the things I love most about you.” He moved closer.

Luke's breath caught in his throat and he knew what Noah was about to do. Noah's hand reached out and gently stroked his face. Their eyes locked and Luke knew Noah was asking for permission. A wave of dizziness washed over him as Noah moved even closer, his lips just a hairsbreadth away from Luke's. One of the machines monitoring Luke's vitals began beeping loudly, and they jumped apart.

Allison was the first one in the room.

“Luke?” She asked, walking over the beeping machine. Allison read the stats and then looked at Luke. “How are you feeling?”

“Dizzy.” He managed to gasp, the room starting to spin.

“What's wrong?” Noah demanded.

“His blood pressure spiked.” Allison said. “I'm going to get Dr. Oliver.” She put a hand on Luke's shoulder. “Just concentrate on your breathing.” Then she was gone.

The room was spinning, and Luke moaned.

Suddenly Dr. Oliver was there.

“Luke?” Reid called his name. Luke tried to focus on his voice. “Luke, you need to calm down.” The cold touch of a stethoscope on his chest made him flinch. He could hear Dr. Oliver ordering medications. He felt Dr. Oliver lifting his eyelid and a bright light shined in his eye. He tried to turn his head away, but Dr. Oliver wouldn't let him.

“Look at me, Luke.” He said. Luke struggled to open his eyes, the dizziness ebbing a little. “Keep your eyes on me.”

“Is he all right?” Luke heard Noah ask.

“Well, I think it's safe to say he's overdone it.” Dr. Oliver replied. “I think it's best if you leave.”

“I can't leave until I know he's okay.”

“Your being here is not helping matters, Mr. Mayer.” Reid snapped. “Don't make me throw you out.”

“Don't...fight.” Luke gasped. Slowly the room ceased spinning and Luke felt a lethargy steal over him.

“We're not fighting.” Dr. Oliver assured him. “Your boyfriend was just leaving.”

“Yeah, I should go.” Noah muttered after a second. “I'll see you soon, Luke.” Noah squeezed his hand and walked out of the room.

“How are you feeling now?” Dr. Oliver asked him.

“Tired.” Luke mumbled. His arms felt like lead weights.

“That's to be expected.” Dr. Oliver turned to Allison. “Thank you, Nurse Stewart. I can take it from here.” She nodded.

“I'll come check on you later, Luke.” She promised, and then Allison was leaving, shutting the door behind her.

Luke was struggling to keep his eyes open, watching as Dr. Oliver made notes on his chart. As if he felt him looking, Reid glanced up at him.

“You should try to rest.”

Luke nodded slowly, looking at him expectantly. With a sigh, Dr. Oliver sat down in the chair, and relaxed.

“What do you want to hear about today?” He asked. Luke smiled.

“I just realized I don't know your first name.” Luke whispered, his eyes closing.

“Reid.” Dr. Oliver finally said after a pause.

“Reid.” Luke repeated. It looped in his head as he fell asleep, listening to Dr. Oliver talk about a patient that had flown up from his Dallas practice for an operation.

Reid.

It was a nice name.
