Title: Fate
Author: slayerkitty
Genre: Romance, Angst, AU
Rating: PG-13 for language (For now, rating may be upped later.)
Characters: Luke/Reid
Disclaimer:  As the World Turns and it's characters are not mine, no matter how much I enjoy playing with them.  :)
Summary:  Luke is in car accident on the way home from a business trip.  Reid saves him in more ways than one.

Author's Notes: So, this was sort of inspired by sripley's "It's the What If Factor."  I was re-reading it, reveling in her ability to change up the story so awesomely and still keep it true to the characters, and thought to myself, I can do that.  So this is me trying another take on the the Luke/Reid relationship with a different beginning, and we'll see where we end up.   Story starts in January 2010.  If it isn't said enough, the medical stuff I am making up as I go.

You guys....I just love you guys.  Thank you so much for all of your comments.  Randomly - can anyone explain to me how to 'hide' my links to previous chapters?  For example, if I want to go to chapter 1, I would just click on the number 1, etc.   This fic is starting to get long, and I don't want the previous chapters taking up a bunch of room.

Luke took in Reid’s puzzled expression as the doctor entered his room. Their encounter the day before had left things strained, and when Reid had shown up for his usual morning visit, they didn’t even speak.

Luke glared at him, and then at his parents, who were standing off to one side.

“The nurse said you wanted to see me.” Reid said stiffly, looking from Luke to his parents.

“Don’t look at me.” Luke replied, crossing his arms. “This wasn’t my idea.”

“What’s going on?” Reid asked, setting Luke’s chart down.

“Luke remembered something.” Lily spoke up.

“Okay.” Reid replied, glancing back at Luke. “Did you have another panic attack?”

“A small one.” Luke answered. “I was able to get through it.”

“When was this?”

“Last night.” Reid’s expression hardened.

“You should have told me about it this morning.”

“I didn’t think you’d want to hear about it.”

“Luke, that’s enough.” Holden interrupted. He turned to Reid. “Luke has asked Noah here to talk about whatever it is he’s remembered. He doesn’t want to talk about it until Noah gets here.”

“And why am I here?” Reid wanted to know.

“We’re concerned about our son’s health.” Lily said. “We thought his doctor should be here in case he panics again.”

Luke sighed. He’d fought his parents on this all morning, but they had been relentless about it, and he’d finally conceded.

Reid looked like he was going to say no, but then Noah knocked on the door.

“Hey.” He greeted, walking in. He looked around at everyone’s tense expressions. “What’s going on?”

“I needed to talk to you about something.” Luke said. “Something I remembered.”

“Sure.” Noah replied, sitting down.

“I want to make sure I’m remembering it correctly, and my brain isn’t making stuff up.” Luke added. Reid snorted, leaning back against the counter. Luke glared at him. Reid gestured for him to continue. “So last night, Damien came to see me.”

“Are you okay?” Noah asked, worried now.

“You knew he was in trouble?”

“It’s sort of been all over the news.” Noah answered. “He didn’t hurt you, did he?”

“No.”

“He shot me.” Reid interrupted. Startled, Noah looked up at him.

“You’re kidding.” He said. “I hope you’re okay.”

“I’m fine.” Reid answered through clenched teeth.

“After he left, I was thinking about what happened, playing it back in my head, and I think I remembered something.” Luke resumed his story.

“What?” Noah turned his attention back to Luke.

“This might sound insane.”

“You might be surprised.”

“Did your father try to kill me?”

“Of all the things for you to remember.” Lily spoke up. Shocked, Luke looked at this mother, and then back to Noah, who looked pained.

“He did.”

“He took us camping?” Noah sighed.

“It was a fishing trip.”

“He threatened me with a gun.” Luke said.

“Yes.” Luke closed his eyes, the memory playing out in his head. He could hear his mother sniffling, and he glanced at Lily.

“Mom, please don’t cry.”

“It’s not fair!” She exclaimed, moving to his bedside. “You shouldn’t have to relive this again.”

“I have to know the truth.” Luke told her. “I can’t live a lie.” Lily sighed, smoothing Luke’s hair. Noah’s expression was unreadable. “He pushed me and I fell.”

“Yes.” Noah’s voice sounded hoarse. “You were just lying there, and not moving and…”

“Did he shoot at me?”

“Yes. He missed.”

“I was hoping it wasn’t true.” Luke said quietly. “Is that how I was paralyzed?”

“Yes.” Noah looked tortured. “Did you remember anything else?”

“Just one other thing.” Luke answered. “Before your dad attacked me.” He paused. “We were happy?”

“We were.” Noah looked hopeful at Luke’s words, and leaned forward to take his hand. Luke let him, catching his mother’s blinding smile out of the corner of his eye.

“And that’s how we got together?” Noah nodded.

“We started dating just before that. My dad…kind of went crazy when he found out.”

Luke could only imagine the expression on Reid’s face.

“Well, this is touching.” Speak of the devil. “You’re fine, so I’m going to go.”

“Re - Dr. Oliver, wait.” Reid turned around.

“I think we’re done here, Luke.” He said, and then left.

Luke only had a moment to wonder about Reid’s abrupt exit. Noah and his parents were talking, and he tried to focus on their conversation.

“Is it okay if we talk alone?” Noah asked.

“Sure.” Luke replied, looking to his parents.

“We’ll get out of your way.” Lily said, dropping a kiss on Luke’s forehead. The two men watched them walk out.

“I wonder if they’ll get back together now that Damien’s gone.” Luke mused.

“Well that hasn’t changed.” Noah smiled. “You always wanted them to work it out and stay together.” Luke smiled back at him.

“What did you want to talk about?”

“There’s something I have to tell you.” Noah’s looked serious now.

“What is it?” Luke kept his voice soft, but he was suddenly filled with dread. He wasn’t going to like what Noah was about to say.

“You said you couldn’t live lie, and you’re right.” Noah began. “That’s kind of what I’ve been doing.”

“What are you talking about?” Luke didn’t like where this was going.

“Do you remember when you asked me how long we’d been together?”

“You said ‘off and on’ for years.” Luke quoted.

“I kind of left out a detail.”

“We’re not together anymore, are we?” Luke stared at him, realization setting in. That was why their relationship had felt so off.

“No.”

“Noah!” Luke exclaimed. “How could you lie to me like that?”

“I don’t know.” Noah answered. “You were hurt, and I love you, and I wanted to be together with you again.”

“The fact that I didn’t remember was just a perk, right?” Luke snapped.

“Don’t be like that.”

“How else am I supposed to be, Noah?” Luke practically growled. “God, I don’t even know what to say to you right now.”

“I’m sorry.” Noah whispered.

“You’re sorry?” Luke repeated, incredulous. “Well, that just makes it all better.”

“Why are you getting so upset?”

“How can you ask me that?” Luke paused a second, staring at him. He’d thought for a second that he was getting to know him, remembering him. He’d been so wrong. “There was someone else, wasn’t there?” Noah’s gaze flew up to meet his in shock.

“How…” Noah trailed off. “We never talked about that.”

“But there was.”

“There could have been.” Noah closed his eyes, looking ashamed. “We never…”

“I can’t do this right now.” Luke said, feeling his blood pressure rising, and dizziness start. “I’m getting too worked up.”

“I’ll go.”

“I think that would be best.”

“I really am sorry.”

“Just go, Noah.” Luke ordered, trying to take deep breaths.

He waited until he heard Noah get up and leave before opening his eyes to an empty room.
