Title: Fate
Author: slayerkitty
Genre: Romance, Angst, AU
Rating: PG-13 for language (For now, rating may be upped later.)
Characters: Luke/Reid
Disclaimer:  As the World Turns and it's characters are not mine, no matter how much I enjoy playing with them.  :)
Summary:  Luke is in car accident on the way home from a business trip.  Reid saves him in more ways than one.

Author's Notes: So, this was sort of inspired by sripley's "It's the What If Factor."  I was re-reading it, reveling in her ability to change up the story so awesomely and still keep it true to the characters, and thought to myself, I can do that.  So this is me trying another take on the the Luke/Reid relationship with a different beginning, and we'll see where we end up.   Story starts in January 2010.  If it isn't said enough, the medical stuff I am making up as I go.

You guys....I just love you guys.  Thank you so much for all of your comments.  This chapter kicked my ass.  I hope it doesn't suck.  Also, I hope the Reid's reveal lives up to the one on the show.  :)

Luke sighed as his parents came in to see him.

“Oh, sweetie.” His mother said, reaching out to take his hand.

“Dr. Oliver told you what happened.” Luke said. He tried to smile. “On the bright side, at least I’m starting to remember stuff.”

“Dr. Oliver said you need to keep stress to a minimum.” Holden spoke up. “He doesn’t want to put you on more medication if he can help it.”

“He told us that if you don’t have anymore setbacks, you might be able to come home in a few days.” Lily held his hand tightly, smiling.

“Really?” Luke was looking forward to going home, sleeping in a real - albeit, unfamiliar - bed, but the thought of not seeing Dr. Oliver every day…

“We’ll just have to see how it goes.” Holden said. “I know that Faith, Natalie and Ethan are anxious to see you.”

“Do they know about…?” Luke trailed off, gesturing to his head with his finger.

“Some.” Lily replied.

“We tried not to go into too much detail.” Holden added.

“That’s probably a good thing.” Luke agreed, and then paused. “I know you guys haven’t brought it up, but I was wondering why my dad hasn’t been to see me.”

He watched as Holden and Lily exchanged a look.

“Dr. Oliver said no stress, Luke.” Lily reminded him.

“Talking about my dad is going to cause me stress?”

“Let’s wait until you’re a little stronger, until you come home, and then we can talk about it.” Holden promised.

Luke nodded after a moment, resigned to the fact that his parents were keeping stuff from him.

There was a knock at the door, and Noah poked his head in.

“We'll let you two talk.” Lily said, glancing at Holden. “I'll come by and see you in the morning.” She blew him a kiss and left, patting Noah on the shoulder on her way out.

“Remember.” Holden looked from Luke to Noah and back to Luke. “No stress.”

“I promise.” Noah said, and Holden nodded. He gave Luke a wave and followed Lily out. “How are you feeling?” He asked Luke.

“Like crap.” Luke answered, sighing.

“Your parents told me what happened...I had to come and make sure you were okay.”

“I'm okay, Noah.” Luke avoided his gaze.

“No, you're not.” Noah contradicted. Upset, Luke finally looked up at him.

“I'm so tired of people telling me how I should feel.”

“I'm not...” Noah began. “I didn't come here to fight with you.” He sat down.

“Why are you here?” Luke asked. “I figured after earlier I wouldn't see you for awhile.”

“That's...actually why I'm here.”

“Oh.”

“Before your accident, I was on a film festival circuit.” Noah paused. “I think that given everything, you just need some time.” He stopped again. “I'm going to go finish out the last week...and if you want to see me or remember anything...” He trailed off.

“I'll call?”

“You better.” Noah smiled sadly. “I'm gonna miss you.”

“I wish...I...”

“I know.” Noah took his hand. “I love you.”

“I know.” There was regret in his voice.

“What part of no stress are you not understanding, Mr. Mayer?” Luke and Noah looked over to see Dr. Oliver standing there.

“I was just leaving.”

“That sounds like a great idea.”

“What's your problem?” Noah asked, getting up while glaring at him.

“My problem?” Dr. Oliver repeated.

“Yeah.” Noah said. “You obviously have a problem with me and I'd like to know what it is.”

“My only problem, Mr. Mayer, is that you can't seem to follow simple directions when it affects my patients well-being.”

“No, no, it's more than that.”

“Well, I don't particularly like you.” Reid said, looking down at Luke's chart.

“Can you two not do this?” Luke interrupted.

“Is it because we're gay?” Noah ignored Luke. Dr. Oliver stared at him, one eyebrow raised in surprise.

“You think I would compromise the care of a patient because of his sexuality?” Dr. Oliver sounded offended.

“Of course not.” Noah snapped. “You've taken really good care of Luke.”

“I'm afraid I'm missing your point, Mr. Mayer.”

“When it's your patient, you don't care about anything but fixing them. You probably don't even see them as people.” He was shouting now. “And here I am, throwing it in your face.”

“You couldn't be further from the truth.”

“Well, then enlighten me.” Noah demanded.

“The reason that I don't care about your relationship, Mr Mayer, aside from the obvious part where I don't really like you, is because I'm gay.” Reid snapped.

“You're gay?” Luke asked, staring at him.

“Not that it's either of your business, but yes.” Dr. Oliver cleared his throat. “Now that we've gotten that out of the way, why don't you leave so I can get back to taking care of Luke.”

“Yeah.” Noah finally said, heading for the door. He turned around in the doorway and looked at Luke. “I meant what I said.”

Luke nodded and then he was gone. There was an awkward silence as Reid checked Luke's machines and wrote down the results. All Luke could do was stare at him.

“Cat got your tongue, Luke?”

“No, sorry.” Luke said awkwardly. He cleared his throat. “So, you told my parents maybe I could go home soon?”

“We'll see how it goes.” Reid adjusted Luke's IV.

“Is it weird that I don't want to leave?” Luke asked. Dr. Oliver looked at him.

“Not necessarily.” Reid answered. “This hospital is all you know. Going out into the world can be...”

“Terrifying.” Luke finished.

“Exactly.” They were quiet for a moment, and Luke still couldn't take his eyes off of his doctor.

“Seriously, Luke, take a picture.” Reid snarked.

“Sorry.” Luke smiled a little, embarrassed.

“Why do you keep looking at me like that?”

“I can't believe I didn't realize you were gay.”

“You did just have major brain surgery.” Reid reminded him. “Does it matter?”

“Of course not.” Reid smiled a little.

“You should get some rest.”

“Will you stay?”

“Not tonight, Luke.” Reid put Luke's chart down in the bin near the door, and moved to the doorway. “Get some sleep.”

With that, he left the room. Luke stared into the empty doorway long after he was gone.
