Title: Fate
Author:
slayerkitty Genre: Romance, Angst, AU
Rating: PG-13 for language (For now, rating may be upped later.)
Characters: Luke/Reid
Disclaimer: As the World Turns and it's characters are not mine, no matter how much I enjoy playing with them. :)
Summary: Luke is in car accident on the way home from a business trip. Reid saves him in more ways than one.
Author's Notes: So, this was sort of inspired by sripley's "It's the What If Factor." I was re-reading it, reveling in her ability to change up the story so awesomely and still keep it true to the characters, and thought to myself, I can do that. So this is me trying another take on the the Luke/Reid relationship with a different beginning, and we'll see where we end up. Story starts in January 2010. If it isn't said enough, the medical stuff I am making up as I go.
You guys....I just love you guys. Thank you so much for all of your comments. This is quite possible my favorite chapter so far. :)

community.livejournal.com/lure_atwt/560348.html Reid was sitting on the end of a hospital bed, grimacing while some second-rate intern finished bandaging him up.
“It was just a slight graze, Dr. Oliver.” The young man said. “You should be fine in a few days.”
“I could have told you that.” Flustered, the intern stammered his reply, and made a hasty exit. Reid looked around for his shirt, and spotted it on the chair.
He was just leaning over to pick it up when a hand appeared into his line of vision and lifted the garment.
Luke held out the shirt, and Reid took it from him slowly. Their fingertips brushed and his mouth went dry.
“I just wanted to see how you were doing.” Luke said, staring at him.
“Aside from the fact that I could have done a better job if I had stitched myself up, I’m fine.”
“Are you?”
“Yes.”
“Good.” Luke replied, crossing his arms over his chest.
“What are you doing out of bed?” Reid wanted to know. “You should be resting.”
“Dr. Hughes checked me out, said my blood pressure was back to normal.” Luke began. “So I charmed my way out of my IV, and came to check on you.” He smiled a little. “Besides, they’re getting me a new room. Mine is a ‘crime scene’ now.”
“Well, I’m fine.”
“So you keep saying.” Luke watched as Reid shook out his shirt and then threw it down disgust. It was ripped and covered in blood.
“Look.” Luke said, turned around and shutting the door. Reid watched him warily. “There’s another reason I wanted to see you.”
“What?”
“To say thank you.”
“You really don’t have to.” Reid replied, avoiding Luke’s gaze.
“You risked your life for me.” Luke went on like Reid hadn’t spoken, approaching him slowly. “It’s my fault you got shot.”
“It was nothing, Luke.” Reid protested.
“You realize that’s the third time you’ve saved my life?” Luke was moving ever closer, and Reid knew he should move away. Get up and leave the room. His body didn’t seem to be listening to the warning message from his brain.
“I’m a doctor.” Reid managed to say. “It’s what I do.”
“Don’t give me that.” Luke cut him off, stopping in front of him. “You didn’t have to pull me from my car, or try and take out my father.”
“I couldn’t just leave you there.”
“I know.” Luke reached out and slowly put his hand on top of Reid’s. “Thank you.”
“Luke, please.” Reid whispered, making the mistake of looking up at him. His breath caught it his throat and he couldn’t look away. Luke shifted closer so that he was standing between Reid’s legs. “I…we can’t…”
“Shhh.” Luke replied, his free hand coming up and caressing Reid’s cheek. Reid swallowed hard, unable to look away as Luke leaned in, his lips just inches away from his own.
Sanity prevailed in the second before their lips touched.
Reid pushed him back gently, but firmly.
“We can’t do this.”
Clearly upset, Luke glared at him.
“Why not?”
“Where should I start, Luke?” Reid stood up slowly. “First, I’m your doctor, you’re my patient.” He sighed. “It’s completely unethical.”
“I’ll get a new doctor.” Reid glared.
“You’ve been through a series of traumatic incidents, and you’ve lost your memory.”
“So?”
“God, Luke, do you even know what you want right now?”
“I know that I want you.” Luke said, walking towards him. Reid held out a hand to stop him.
“Don’t do this.” Reid pleaded. “Because I can’t. I won’t.”
“Reid, I…”
“No.” Reid interrupted him. “This is just a combination of gratitude and guilt talking.”
“It isn't.” Luke denied.
“I mean it, Luke.” Reid sighed. “I’m only going to be in town until you’re discharged from the hospital. Once you go home, I’m going back to Dallas.”
“What?” Shock appeared on his face.
“You heard me.”
“But why?”
“My life is in Dallas, Luke.”
“Your life?” Luke repeated.
“Yes.” Reid answered. “And your life is here, with your family. With Noah.”
They were silent for a moment, the few feet separating them suddenly feeling like the Grand Canyon. Reid cleared his throat. “I’ll have a nurse get you set up in a regular room. I don’t think you need to be in the ICU at this point.” He finally spoke. “I’ll check on you in the morning.”
“Why bother?” Luke snapped.
“Don’t be a brat.”
“Don’t be a cold-hearted bastard.” He paused, biting his lip. “I thought you were different…with me anyway.” Luke’s voice cracked a little.
“You were wrong.” Reid muttered, stepping around Luke and opening the door. Luke was silent as he watched Reid walk out, slamming the door behind him.
It made a loud crack, echoing in the hallway, and reminding Luke of the gunshot that could have killed Reid. That moment played over in his mind, the feelings of realizing that Reid had been shot and it was his fault nearly overwhelming him.
Something was tugging at the edge of Luke’s mind. Something about a gun. Someone was shouting, and then pushing him? He was falling, and then a gun went off.
Luke slid to the floor, gasping. He had to keep it together. Concentrating on his breathing, he kept his head between his knees until the dizziness passed.
Once he felt like he could stand, he got up and headed for the door.
He needed to talk to Noah.
