Title: Fate
Author: [info]slayerkitty
Genre: Romance, Angst, AU
Rating: PG-13 for language (For now, rating may be upped later.)
Characters: Luke/Reid
Disclaimer: As the World Turns and it's characters are not mine, no matter how much I enjoy playing with them. :)
Summary: Luke is in car accident on the way home from a business trip. Reid saves him in more ways than one.

Author's Notes: So, this was sort of inspired by sripley's "It's the What If Factor." I was re-reading it, reveling in her ability to change up the story so awesomely and still keep it true to the characters, and thought to myself, I can do that. So this is me trying another take on the the Luke/Reid relationship with a different beginning, and we'll see where we end up. Story starts in January 2010. If it isn't said enough, the medical stuff I am making up as I go.

You guys....I just love you guys. Thank you so much for all of your comments. This is the first time I have used html, I hope I didn't screw it up. :)

“Pack your bags, Luke.” Reid said, walking into Luke’s hospital room.

“What?”

“You’re going home.” He told Luke, who was silent for a moment.

“And so are you.” Reid turned back to the chart in his hand.

“Yes.”

“You’re really going to leave?” Luke slid off his bed, and stood up.

“Don’t do this.”

“You’re going to give up everything you have here for your ‘life’ back in Dallas.”

“I’m not giving anything up.” Reid denied. “I’ve wanted out of this village of damned since I got here.”

“Then why did you stay?”

“You know why.” Reid paused. “I was responsible for what happened to you.”

“Here’s what I want to know.” Luke said, approaching him. “If you have such a great life in Texas, then why was it so easy for you to drop everything and spend the last month here?”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Don’t I?”

“No.”

Luke smirked.

“Don’t look at me like that.”

“Like what?” Luke asked, sounding innocent. Reid started to say something, and thought better of it.

“Never mind.” He finally said. “It’s done, Luke. My flight is already booked for tomorrow morning. I’m done here.”

“Reid, please -,” Luke began, but was interrupted by a knock on his door. They both looked over and saw his mother standing there.

“Hi honey.” She walked into the room. “Dr. Oliver called and said they were discharging you today.” Lily smiled. “I’m here to take you home.”

“Great.” Luke muttered with false cheerfulness. He forced a smile.

“Thank you so much for everything you’ve done for Luke, Dr. Oliver.” Lily held out her hand for Reid to shake. He took it reluctantly.

“I was just doing my job.”

“Listen, we’re having a little welcome home lunch for Luke. You should come.” Lily invited. “Invite Katie too.”

“Dr. Oliver won’t be able to make it, Mom. He’ll be too busy packing.” Luke snarked, glaring at Reid.

“Packing?” Lily repeated. “Are you leaving so soon, Dr. Oliver?”

“I have to get back to Dallas.” Reid mumbled.

“Well, that settles it then.” Lily told him.

“What?”

“You are coming over for lunch, I won’t take no for an answer.” She answered. “It’ll be a combination welcome home for Luke and a going away party for you.”

“I really…”

“Luke’s Grandma made tons of food. Please come.” Lily said earnestly.

Reid knew he was caught, and agreed with a sigh.

Luke’s eyes widened as he took in his mother’s house. They were walking up the walk.

“So we have money.” Luke commented.

“We’re luckier than most.” Lily smiled at him.

“That’s one way to put it.” Reid muttered under his breath, still trying to figure out how he’d gotten suckered into this.

“Will Katie be joining us, Dr. Oliver?” Lily asked as they slowed to a stop on the porch.

“I left her a message.” He answered, looking uncomfortable.

“Good.” She said, and then looked at Luke. “You ready?”

“As I’ll ever be.” Luke said.

Lily pushed the door open and walked in first, taking Luke by the hand and pulling him inside.

“Luke!” A young male voice shouted, and then hands were wrapped around his leg. Luke bent down and came eye to eye with Ethan.

“Hi, Ethan.” He greeted.

“Are you all better now?” Ethan asked.

“I’m getting there.” Luke answered, smiling.

“I missed you.” Ethan threw his arms around Luke’s neck.

“I missed you too.”

That was the start of a round of hugs with family members Luke knew he would have a hard time keeping straight unless more memories came back.

He could see Reid on the fringes of the crowd, standing next the food table, looking like he’d rather be anywhere else. His Grandmother, Lucinda, was talking to him, and he was giving her a wide eyed ‘are you for real?’ stare.

Luke hoped she would take it easy on him. He’d heard from various people that she was intimidating, though their conversations had always been pleasant. Holden hugged him last, telling him quietly that his brother Aaron and his sister Abigail had both called to welcome him home, and they would call again later if he felt up to it. Luke nodded, glad he hadn’t had to talk with them himself. It was hard enough to carry on conversations with people he didn’t remember face-to-face. Based on the awkward phone conversations he’d already had with his brother and sister, he wasn’t looking forward to more.

Noah was there too, Luke saw. They exchanged an awkward greeting, conscious that everyone was watching.

Lily hovered constantly, making sure he had plenty of food and that he didn’t have to get up for anything. All while doing that, she made a toast to Dr. Oliver, embarrassing him thoroughly.

Luke waited until she had ducked in the kitchen to refill his drink before making his escape. He just needed five minutes to himself. He gestured to his dad that he was going to run upstairs, and snuck up when no one was looking.

He remembered where his bedroom was, which he took as a good sign.

It felt right, being in his room. Empty though, like something was missing, and Luke wondered if he and Noah had lived here together.

He went walked slowly around the room, touching things, trying to spark something. The memories were coming back slowly, but Reid had said that some things might never come back. Luke hated to think there would be something he wouldn’t remember. He drifted over to his desk, seeing a picture of his family next to the light. Luke picked it up with a smile, the memory of that day suddenly blazing into his brain.

Putting it down, his finger brushed the edge of a tie hanging off his desk chair. He curled the fabric in his fingers, lifting it up. It was a green striped tie, pretty non-descript. So why did it feel so important?

“I’ve always loved that tie.” Noah said, startling Luke. He turned and saw Noah standing in the doorway. He looked from Noah, back to the tie and gasped a little.

The memory of their first kiss was suddenly there.

“Me too.” He said, smiling a little.

“So you do remember.”

“I do now.” Luke replied. He hung the tie back on his chair. “But it doesn’t change the way things are right now.”

Noah swallowed hard and then nodded.

“Look, I know you’re pissed.”

“That’s an understatement, Noah.”

“I didn’t come here to make things worse.” Noah held out a DVD case in his grip. “I just wanted to give this to you - I made it.”

Luke gave him a long look, frowning a little.

“What is it?” He asked, finally taking it from Noah.

“I edited together your family’s home movies.” He shuffled nervously. “I thought at least if you couldn’t remember it, you could see some it.”

“Wow.” Luke said, opening the case and looking at the DVD inside. “Thank you.”

“I didn’t intend for things to turn out this way, Luke. You have to know that.”

“Part of me does.” Luke replied. “But you lied about our relationship and you knew I didn’t remember. Who does that, Noah?”

“I can’t excuse it.” Noah was upset. “I was just so scared of losing you.”

“You had already lost me.” Luke pointed out. “We broke up.”

“I know that.” He muttered. “I thought that this was a second chance for us.” Noah paused. “I’m sorry, Luke.”

Luke crossed his arms over his chest, scuffing the toe of shoe across the floor.

“I know.”

“Do you think after some time has passed…?” Noah looked hopeful.

“I honestly can’t answer that right now.” Luke looked up at him. Noah moved closer, and took one of Luke’s hands. He reached out a hand and stroked Luke’s cheek. Leaning down, Noah pressed his lips to Luke’s forehead, resting them there for a second. Luke closed his eyes, suddenly overwhelmed.

Noah eventually pulled away, sniffling a little.

“Good-bye, Luke.” He whispered, before turning around and walking away.

“Good-bye, Noah.” Luke said.
