Title: Fate
Author: slayerkitty
Genre: Romance, Angst, AU
Rating: Shades of R, to be safe(this chapter is pretty much G)
Characters: Luke/Reid
Disclaimer: As the World Turns and it's characters are not mine, no matter how much I enjoy playing with them. :)
Summary: Luke is in car accident on the way home from a business trip. Reid saves him in more ways than one.

Author's Notes: So, this was sort of inspired by sripley's "It's the What If Factor." I was re-reading it, reveling in her ability to change up the story so awesomely and still keep it true to the characters, and thought to myself, I can do that. So this is me trying another take on the the Luke/Reid relationship with a different beginning, and we'll see where we end up. Story starts in January 2010. If it isn't said enough, the medical stuff I am making up as I go.

You guys....I just love you guys. Thank you so much for all of your comments. This chapter covers the rest of February, so we'll be moving some time along. :)

Reid hated it when he was wrong. He hated it even more that he was wrong about this and Luke was right.

It really was going to be March before he would see Luke again. The last two weeks had flown by, a blur of meetings and patients, quick phone calls and text messages to Luke.

Casey’s wedding had gone off without a hitch, and now Reid’s favorite nurse (not that he’d ever admit it anyone) was on her honeymoon. Luke had called him after the ceremony, practically gushing about how it went. Reid had teased him mercilessly about it since.

With Luke going back to work at his foundation, his time was limited. If he wasn’t working, he was resting, under his family’s watchful eye. They were determined that he not over do it.

The Wednesday after the wedding, Reid called Luke while getting ready for bed.

“You know, this would probably be easier if you just told your parents about us.” Reid said, getting a grumble from Luke.

“You know how they are.”

“I know.” Reid sighed. “We agreed when this started that we weren’t going to sneak around, Luke, but that’s exactly what’s happening.”

“I’m sorry, I just…I’ll tell them soon.” Luke promised. “The last thing I want is for them to accuse you of being unethical.”

“Considering you pursued me, that’s appreciated.”

“See?” Reid could hear the unspoken ‘I told you so’ in his tone.

“What about Sunday?” Reid asked.

“That might work.” Luke replied. “I’ll let you know.

The next few days had been nothing but text messages back and forth, both of them looking forward to Sunday. They had planned to just hang out at Katie’s and watch basketball.

Until Sunday morning, when Luke texted him that he was at the hospital. He’d had a panic attack, and his parents had taken him to the ER.

Reid’s first urge was to drop everything, rush to the hospital and be there for him.

I’m on my way.
-R

He had his coat on, standing in the open doorway when his phone had buzzed.

No! Parents are here. Will be sent home soon.
I will call you.
-L

Reid had tried really hard not to get mad.

He’d waited until early evening with no word from Luke. A quick call to the hospital confirmed that Luke hadn’t been admitted.

He had been so out of sorts, he’d snapped at Katie and made her cry. Once he apologized, she took pity on him and called Holden. Luke’s doctor had put him on anxiety medication, and he was fine, but asleep.

Reid didn’t hear from Luke for two days after that.

Needless to say, he’d been grouchy when he saw who was calling.

“Hi.” Luke’s timid voice filled his ear.

“You remembered I exist.” Reid said.

“I’m sorry.”

“You’re sorry?” Reid was angrier than he’d realized. “Well, that makes it okay.”

“Reid, please.” Luke’s voice sounded weak, and Reid felt bad. “I miss you.”

“Yeah.” Reid sighed. “Did you tell your parents yet?” Luke was silent. “Of course not.”

“Don’t be like that.”

“I can’t do this, Luke.”

“Reid.” Luke protested.

“Do you know how worried I’ve been?”

“I know, I’m sorry, I…”

“Are you feeling better?” Reid asked, cutting him off.

“I feel a little strung out, but that’s the meds.” Luke answered him, sounding relieved at the change of subject. “When will I see you?”

“You could see me right now if you’d just tell your parents.”

“I can’t.”

“Luke, you’re a grown man.”

“I just want something that’s mine, is that so hard to understand?”

“No.” Reid replied after a pause. They’d made tentative plans for the weekend, before going silent. “I am, you know.” He kept his voice low.

“What?” Luke asked, sounding confused.

“Yours.”

It was Saturday. Reid was not having a good day. His plans with Luke had just been effectively canceled by a head-on collision and an emergency surgery waiting for him at the hospital.

He sent Luke a quick text letting him know, before rushing to the hospital. He was pulling into the parking garage when his phone buzzed.

Reid checked the text while he walked.

See, I told you. March.
Call me later.
-L

Reid sent a quick text back.

Okay, know-it-all.
-R

By Monday night - March first, though he'd refused to turn the calendar over and let it mock him - Reid was ready to just knock on Luke’s door, and let the chips fall where they may. He didn’t care how pissed Luke was about it. This was ridiculous.

His phone rang, and he picked it up with a sigh.

“Dr. Oliver.”

“I have the house to myself.” Luke's rushed voice washed over him, and it took him a second to realize what he’d said. “How fast can you get here?”

“Fifteen minutes.” Reid promised.

He made it in ten.
