Title: Fate
Author:
slayerkittyGenre: Romance, Angst, AU
Rating: PG-13 for language (For now, rating may be upped later.)
Characters: Luke/Reid
Disclaimer: As the World Turns and it's characters are not mine, no matter how much I enjoy playing with them. :)
Summary: Luke is in car accident on the way home from a business trip. Reid saves him in more ways than one.
Author's Notes: So, this was sort of inspired by sripley's "It's the What If Factor." I was re-reading it, reveling in her ability to change up the story so awesomely and still keep it true to the characters, and thought to myself, I can do that. So this is me trying another take on the the Luke/Reid relationship with a different beginning, and we'll see where we end up. Story starts in January 2010. If it isn't said enough, the medical stuff I am making up as I go.
You guys....I just love you guys. Thank you so much for all of your comments. I'm so glad everyone loved the last chapter, I was really worried about how it turned out. You guys rock!

17 Luke felt someone jostling his shoulder and he startled awake.
“Shhh, it's just me.” He heard Reid whisper.
“Reid?” Luke mumbled, confused.
“Yeah?”
“Did I fall asleep?” His voice was rough.
“You snore.” Luke lifted his head, and realized that he was pretty much lying on Reid. Blushing, he tried to pull away. Reid gently pushed him back the way he was, Luke's head back on his shoulder. “It's fine, Luke.” Reid smiled. “You needed to rest.” They were quiet for a second, the droning of the television the only sound.
“I don't snore.”
“How do you know?” Reid asked, sounding amused. Luke looked up at him.
“I have no idea.” He said, and then grinned.
“I didn't want to wake you, but your phone has been going off for about fifteen minutes now.”
“Oh, crap.” Luke pulled his cell phone out of his pants pocket and flipped it open. Five missed calls and two missed text messages. Four of the calls and the text messages were from his parents, and the most recent call was from Noah. “How long was I asleep?” He wanted to know.
“A couple of hours.” Reid answered, turning Luke's phone so he could see.
“They're all probably freaking out right now.”
“Well, you did just get out of the hospital.”
“I should call and let them know where I am.” Luke sat up, reluctantly pulling away from Reid. He pushed a button on his phone, started to put it up to his ear, and then suddenly flipped it shut.
“What was that about?” Reid stared at him.
“I have no idea what to say.” Luke replied, holding the closed phone to his lips, thinking.
“You could try the truth.” Reid looked at Luke, gauging his reaction.
“That's not the kind of thing I can tell my mother over the phone.” Luke sighed. “You know how she is.”
“Sadly, yes.” Reid said, getting up. “Just tell her that you and Katie convinced me to stay, and Katie forced you to celebrate with us.”
“Lie?”
“You already said you can't tell her the truth.” Luke's phone chirped again, indicating another text message.
“It's from Noah.”
“They really are freaking out if their recruiting him.” Reid grabbed a beer from the fridge and walked back towards Luke while opening it. “Just call your mother.” Luke's phone rang. “Or you could answer that.”
With a sigh, Luke opened his phone and put it up to his ear.
“Hi, Mom.” He said, staring at Reid. “Yeah, I know.” Luke paused. “I'm fine, I swear.” Another pause. “I just fell asleep at Katie's.” Luke put his hand to his forehead. “I said I was fine.” He pinched the bridge of his nose, and Reid knew his headache was bothering him again. “Yeah, if that's what you want. Please tell everyone to stop calling me. I love you too.” With that, Luke hung up.
“Your mother is a bit high maintenance, isn't she?” Luke glared. “What?” Luke just shook his head, and stood up.
“I should go.” Reid set his beer down on the coffee table as Luke stuck his phone back in his pocket. Luke grabbed the open ends of Reid's shirt and pulled the older man to him. “I've gotten so used to seeing you everyday.” He murmured, meeting Reid's gaze. “When will I see you again?”
“The next few days are going to be crazy. ” Reid said quietly. “With all the stuff for the new wing.”
“And I will be lucky if my mother lets me out of the house in the foreseeable future.” Luke muttered, and Reid chuckled. “Hey, I know.” Luke said.
“What?”
“Casey Hughes is having a bachelor party Saturday night. Come with me.”
“I don't know, Luke.” Reid replied, cupping Luke's face in his hands.
“Please?” Luke asked. “It's going to be weird enough as it is, with a bunch a 'close' friends and family that I don't remember in a bar where I can't drink.”
“Well, when you put it that way.” Reid pressed his forehead against Luke's.
“Is that a yes?”
“Yes, it's a yes.” Reid shook his head. “How do you talk me into these things?”
“It's a gift.”
“Now you sound like me.”
“I learn from the best.” Luke smiled.
“Don't you forget it.” Reid leaned down and kissed him. It was soft and slow, different from their earlier lust filled kisses. Luke slid his hands under Reid's shirt, carefully avoiding his wound, to wrap them around the older man. Reid inhaled sharply, and Luke smiled into the kiss.
“If you don't stop that,” Reid whispered against his lips. “Then I'm not going to let you leave.” Luke laughed at that, breaking the kiss. He felt almost giddy.
“Listen, about Saturday...” Luke began, suddenly looking worried.
“You're not canceling already?” Reid asked with a laugh.
“Of course not.” Luke replied. “I was just going to say that maybe we should keep this,” He gestured from Reid to himself, “quiet for now.”
“You aren't suggesting we sneak around, are you?”
“No.” Luke bit his lip. “It's just that it's Casey's night and I don't want to do anything to take the attention off of him.” Reid stared at him for a second.
“And Noah will be there.”
“That too.” Luke said. “Just because I'm not with him anymore doesn't mean I want to hurt him.”
“You are a better person than I am.”
“So does that mean we can keep it low-key?” Reid nodded after a moment. “Thank you.” Luke leaned up and kissed him again. Reid pulled away reluctantly, and let go of Luke long enough to pull out his wallet. He opened it and pulled out a business card, and smiled at Luke's questioning gaze. Reid flipped it over and showed it to him.
“This is my cell phone number.” He said, handing to Luke. “Just because we can't see each other doesn't mean we can't talk.”
“Gee, Dr. Oliver, you shouldn't have.” Luke teased, staring at the card for a second before pulling out his own wallet and slipping it inside.
“I know.” Luke snorted, and then his phone chirped again. “Your mother again?”
“No.” Luke sighed, checking his phone. “My grandmother's driver. Mom insisted.” He put his hand over Reid's mouth just as he started to speak. “Not a word.” Luke kissed him again, quickly this time.
“I'll see you Saturday.”
“Yes, you will.”
Reid watched as Luke opened the door and threw him a little wave before he left.

Okay, informal poll time. In one of the upcoming chapters, Luke and Reid will be attending Casey's bachelor party (effectively and finally moving this story into mid-February). I am toying with the idea of having the boys at the party play 'I Never'. For those who don't know what that is, it's a drinking game, where one person says something they have never done, and everyone who has done it has to take a drink(usually a shot). If I decide to this route, I need some suggestions for things that the party guests have never done - preferably things that actually happened on the show and can be presented in a funny light. Party guests will include Casey (obviously), Luke, Reid, Noah, Will, and Chris. Other guests may be added as I think of them.
Suggest away!
