Warrick made a surprise stop, and Nick almost ran into him.
“Hey, warn me before you do that!”
“I think I’m in an alternative reality.”
“Is my nose bleeding? You got some kind of a condition that causes hardening of the spine or something?”
“Keep your eyes open, man, and shut up.”
“I can feel the cartilage moving-”
“Because you’re twisting it!”
“I have to make sure there’s no damage-
“Shut up and look.” Warrick pointed to the direction of the DNA lab. On the other side of the window Greg was leaning over his desk, talking with Brass. “Since when does Brass get DNA results from the lab?”
“Maybe he dropped in for a chat.”
“With Sanders?”
“Yeah, maybe not…”
“And look. No results anywhere. Sanders’s hasn’t checked anything from the logs, he hasn’t passed any prints, Brass is definitely not there for DNA results.”
“Too bad Grissom isn’t here, he could lip read.”
“You can’t?” Warrick shot him a frustrated glance. “What kind of a Grissom Wannabe are you, if you can`t even lip read?”
“The kind that thinks you should ask Greg, if you’re so curious. Brass just left.”
Warrick turned to make sure the route was clear and walked into the DNA lab. Greg looked up and grinned.
“Two more guys, just when I got rid of the last one. I’m a man-magnet… if I could project the same allure to women, me and Sara could have lived our From Here To Eternity love story a long time ago.” He gave Nick a crooked smirk. “Not that I would switch our Spartacus love story for that.”
“Spartacus?” Nick parroted. “Not even Brokeback Mountain?”
“Are you kidding? That flick was way too sad for my taste, I had to leave half an hour before it ended, because I couldn’t watch it. Spartacus is a lot better. Hot guys in in small skirts, and that guy from Psycho getting out of a bath… Mmmmm…”
“Greg?”
“Wait a minute, I need to get rid of the mental image…”
“Greg-”
“Not yet.” Greg glanced down. “Okay, it’s gone. And anyway, maybe we’re more like a couple in an episode of The Love Boat. The original one, not the remake.”
“We’re not on a cruise ship, we’re in the middle of the desert.”
“It’s totally like something form that show. A conservative stuffy Texan comes to start a new life away from his mink-like family-”
“Hey!”
“Check you family tree, honey. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: You relatives have no sense of family planning.”
“Greg!”
“I’m not done. The Texan comes on board, in this case to the lab and meet a sexy wild child from Frisco. The sparks are instantaneous.” He batted his eyelashes at Nick. “And there’s the know-it-all captain-”
“Grissom?”
“Who else? And the perky cruise director would probably be Sara, but she’s not really that perky or chirpy… Maybe Archie’s a better McCoy…”
“Archie’s a guy.”
“So? And the mouthy bartender would be Ricky-boy here.”
“I’m a bartender?” Warrick stated. “I don’t even get a uniform?”
“Well, you both don’t know when to stop and you both know things or two about addictions.”
“What about Brass?”
“Brass? I think he would be that grumpy technician who got kicked out.”
“I don’t remember that.”
“He was in just one episode.”
“What about the original?”
“Technician or Brass?”
“Brass.”
“You just missed him-”
“I know, we saw him. Why was he here?”
“He jus brought a copy of the new PD newsletter. It doesn`t really come out till next week, but he knows a guy who knows a guy who lost his shirt in poker and didn`t tell his wife...” Greg pulled a small leaflet from the top drawer of his desk. “And we`re all having a celebratory beer after the shift at Murray’s.”
“Celebrating what and why didn’t I know about it?”
“I didn’t know about it either.” Nick commented. “We’re still working on our case, and Sara and Cath are-”
“Not a case. And Brass picked the place, they still keep his fave record in the jukebox.”
“You know his favourite record?”
“Sure. The Hillbilly Quartet plays Sinatra. Page two, right after the PD weight loss challenge.”
Warrick took the leaflet and opened the page.
“Who won it?”
“Adams from the drug taskforce. Although someone made a protest, claiming he had used forbidden substances to win.”
“Drugs?”
“No, leftovers from the cafeteria. Everyone knows that when they reach the mature age of two days, no one can eat them without vomiting. They’re postponing the ceremonies till they can figure out if he really cheated.” Greg was too busy to notice that Warrick had found the article in the bottom of the page.
“Sanders.” Warrick groaned and waved the leaflet in front of his face. “You knew about this.”
“I knew about what?” Greg tried to sound innocent, but failed badly. “You mean the guy who got the job in the PD now that Lowe’s gone?”
“You knew Don applied for it and you didn’t tell me!”
“Don’t yell at me, Nicky knew too!”
“Stokes…” Warrick turned to glare at Nick. “Start explaining and fast.”
“I didn’t lie! I told you the deadline for application had come and gone and that was the truth! You never asked if Don left his application on time.”
“Yeah, and we didn’t know if he would actually get it.” Greg assisted. “And technically you knew Don was already handling Lowe’s place temporarily till his exchange period in the Vegas PD ends. Now he`ll just continue in that position permanently. No biggie.”
“It is big! This means he’s staying!”
“Well…” Greg shrugged. “Isn’t that a good thing?”
“Yeah.” Warrick slumped down on one of the chair and leaned against the desk. The crumbled leaflet was still in his hand. “It’s just… wow…”
Greg leaned closer to Nick and whispered theatrically.
“Is that a happy wow or an unhappy wow?”
“Happy.” Warrick stated and his lips curled into a small smile. “That was a happy wow.”
