Crime lab, Miami

“Eric, I’m gonna say this as gently as I possibly can.” Valera sighed. “If you don’t stop that, I`ll go get an axe, chop off your head, grease it up with butter and shove it up your ass.”

“Valie….!” Eric tried to put on his best puppy eyes.
“And don’t call me that! You’re driving me nuts!”
“I was just sitting here.”
“You’ve been sitting there tapping the table for the last half an hour, and I have a report to finish. I can’t focus!”
“I don’t have anything to do. I finished my case and there’s half an hour left before the end of the shift.”
“But I’m still trying to work here. Do what you usually do when you’re bored: Go chat up that little bimbo in the cafeteria.”
“Ryan’s not here so he can’t punish me for it, so what’s the point?”
“What’s your normal punishment for flirting?”
“I’m not gonna tell you.” Eric grinned. “Let’s just say it’s the only reason I flirt anymore.”
“That good?”
“Oh yeah….”

“Good for you.” Valera gave up her typing and leaned back in her chair. “I need some dirty details after the date I had last night.”

“Bad?”
“You know what it’s like to date guys in Miami?”
“You’re talking to a newly coupled man in a committed relationship.”
“Sorry, it takes a while to get used to it. I still think of you as our very own loose-limbed man-whore.”
“Really touching, Val.”
“Anyway, half the guys in Miami are over fifty, and practically everyone with more than three gold chains is a drug dealer. I had a date with this really cute guy. It started well: He came to pick me up in clean clothes, with flowers and without his mom.”
“Where did he take you?”

“To that new seafood place. When we got there I started to notice the warning signs.”
“What kinda signs?”
“First he asked where I bought my scarf. Then he complimented my top.” She sighed. “Then came the final straw. He said I had nice shoes.”

“And ?”
“And he asked if the store carried them in his size. I escaped as quickly as I could, it wasn’t easy in five inch heels….”
“That’s the best part of dating in Miami: Nothing is normal.”
“That’s true. What about you? Did Ryan already tell you not to call him all the time?”
“Yep. And I didn’t even call him that often!”
“How often?”
“Twice a day?”
“Eric….”
“Six times a day, but some of them were these really porny messages I left to his phone.”
“Eric, he’s been gone for two days!”
“And we’ve had phone sex just once! My libido can’t handle obstacles like this.”
“It builds self-discipline.”
“I already have enough self-discipline!”
“Eric.”
“I can feel the sermon coming….”
“Not sermon, just a good advice.”
“Okay, hit me with it.”

“Take a cold shower and read a good book.”

“Ready to go?”

“Yeah, I gotta stop by at the store on the way.” Danny closed the message on the screen of his cell phone and shoved it back to his pocket. “Lindsay needs some stuff.”
“But you can come with us, right?” Stella checked.
“Yeah, one beer and then I’m heading home.”

“She gave you a permission?”
“I didn’t ask her permission-”
“You did. I had no idea country girls could be so bossy.”
“She’s not bossy.”
“Okay.”
“Thanks.”
“Domineering is a better word.”
“What happened to solidarity between girls?”
“You’re not a girl.”
“I meant…. Forget it.”
“Come on, Don followed his quickie romance to Las Vegas after one week. Can you honestly say you don’t miss that spontaneity? Doing those funny little things you do when the relationship’s new and exiting? And when you can still make your own decisions….”
“Stella!”
“Sorry, I couldn’t resist.”
“Donnie travelling across statelines for some man-love has nothing to do with my life.”
“What if he wants to stay there?”
“He wouldn’t.”
“What if he decides to move there permanently and you’re stuck here?” Stella grinned. “And if I find someone and Hawkes finds somebody? Nobody will drag you out of the belly of the beast for a relaxing night at the bar with the guys….”
“You’re not a guy-”
“Here in the lab everyone’s a guy. Even the girls.”
“Can we just go now? We’re meeting people at the bar, right?”
“Yeah, but why are you in such a hurry?”

“No reason, I just wanna get home.”
“Why?”

“Stella…..” Danny squirmed like an embarrassed schoolboy. “Please don’t do this….”

“You know I’ll get it out of you so just tell me.”
“Lindsay’s waiting for stuff.”
“What stuff?”
“Ice cream, doughnuts and those little yoghurt things.”
“Didn’t she say just last week that she was trying to get rid of the baby weight?”
“Yeah….”
“You do know pregnancy cravings are supposed to go away when the pregnancy is over, don’t you?”
“Please, can we just-” Danny’s cell phone interrupted him. He pulled it out and checked the new message.

“Her Majesty beckons?” Stella guessed.
“Do you mind if I just skip the beers this time?”
“Don’t worry.” She comforted. “Everyone at the lab knows your situation. They’ll guess exactly what’s going on.” She pulled a small parcel from her locker. “The boys from the PD asked me to give this to you when you look particularly desperate. I think this is the right time.”

Danny took the parcel.
“What’s in here?”
“According to them, it’s a Life Saving device for a whipped colleague. They also said you better hide it carefully when you go home.”

He tore off the paper and pulled out several porn magazines.
“Tell the guys I’m grateful.”
“I’ll tell them. I’m usually against porn, but everyone has their limits. If you need them, go ahead. I wont judge.” Stella gave him a wink and walked out.
Danny stared at the stack of magazines. Then he looked at the message on the cell phone screen. His eyes went back and forth between the two.

Finally he gave up and locked himself into the bathroom.
