Ryan’s apartment, Miami

“I got another letter!” Eric announced and marched into the kitchen. “They wanna publish my article after all.”

“I thought they said it want their kind of stuff.” Ryan stated and emptied his mug with one gulp. He refilled it with coffee and leaned against the counter. “Did you rewrite it or something?”

“They’re starting a new magazine and they wanna buy my article for it. First issue is coming out in two weeks.” Eric waved the letter. “They’ll wanna do some changes to it, but I’ll get a free copy when it comes out. And I’ll get three hundred bucks as a writers fee.”

“Congratulations. What kind of a magazine is it?”
“It’s called Manly Man, I think it’s some kinda sibling magazine for Girly Girl.” Eric handed the letter over to Ryan and started tapping the keys of his cell phone. “This is the first time I’m being published, it’s a big merit on the resume.”

“You’re not going to put that on your resume?”
“Everyone does it.”
“When it’s about scientific articles that has something to do with their work.”
“Yeah, but in Miami even this is something to brag about.”

“Do as you want….” Ryan took a sip from his coffee.
“Is that the sound of jealousy?”
“No, as much as I enjoyed reading your smutty recollection of our courtship, I wouldn’t like to be know as the official pornographer of the crime lab.”

“Pornographer? All the sex-scenes in that piece were journalistically justified and were meant to enrich the views of readers sexual politics.”

“You’ve practised that excuse, haven’t you?”
“Yeah, but only because I knew you would say something like that.”

Crime lab, Las Vegas

“I got a question about Vegas.” Don slouched down on the break room couch. “Who do all the transvestites look like old prize-fighters?”

“Because Las Vegas is the only place where people can walk down the street wearing a ton of sequins without turning heads.” Warrick grinned. “Admit it. Vegas is a whole different kinda beast.”
“Not that different. Crooks are exactly the same everywhere. And the irregular hours.”
“Tell me about it…..”
“That bad?”
“Worse and I’m not going home anytime soon.”
“Part of the job.”
“Yeah. How did it go with your case?”
“That redhead is one fast mover.”
“Catherine?”
“Yeah. We were interviewing this lawyer. She took one look at the guy’s empty ring finger and start shoving her boobs in his face.”
“Literally?”
“You know what I mean.”
“Did she get anywhere with him?”

“No, but when we were leaving the creep slipped me his card and told me call anytime, day or night if I needed some assistance with my handcuffs.”

Two weeks later

“It’s here!” Eric announced and walked into the kitchen waved a thick large envelope.
“Can’t you just come in like a normal person?” Ryan sighed. “Those little entrances are becoming a habit for you….”

“I went to pick up my mail and I got my free copy!” Eric shoved the envelope over to Ryan. “Open it.”

“You don’t want to do the honours?”
“No, I’m too excited. Open it and tell me what my article looks like.”
“You don’t want to take the first look?”
“Nope.” Eric turned around and pressed his eyes shut.
“Okay.” Ryan tore the envelope open and took a good look at the magazine.
“What does it look like? Good?”
“Yeah, pretty good.”
“Glossy?”
“Yeah.”
“Pretty bimbo on the cover?”
“Almost…. A pretty himbo on the cover.”
“Do they list my article on the cover?”
“Yeah, they do…. Along with some other interesting topics….”
“What about the article?”

“Wait a sec…. Page thirty-six….. Okay, I found it. They switched the headline.”
“Well, they said they wanted to do some changes. What’s the new title?”

“Behind the Badge: The sordid Sex Adventures of the Miami Crime lab.”

“Really?”
“Yep. And the illustration is interesting too.”
“They illustrated it?”
“Apparently you are now a blue-eyed blond and I’m a six foot five black guy.”

“Maybe they couldn’t find suitable models.” Eric shrugged. “They could have called us, we could have done the pics.”
“Not this sort of pics.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well… in the first picture….Remember that part of your text when you talk about that little session on the slab in the morgue when we were waiting for Alexx?”

“How could I forget?”
“They apparently decided to illustrate it. With very graphic details.”
“There’s something funny about this whole thing but I can’t put my finger on it….”
“I can.” Ryan sighed. “Manly Man is a porn magazine.”

“What?!” Eric swirled around like a merry-go-round and grabbed the magazine from him. “They took my article and they turned it into a porny story about CSIs who can’t keep their hands off each other long enough to solve crimes!”

“Are you okay?”
“I… I…. I feel dirty. Sleazy. Cheap. Common.” The look on Eric’s face brightened. “Actually that’s kinda hot. Hurry up.”

“What?”
“Bedroom, I feel inspired.” He grabbed Ryan and started pulling him to the bedroom, but suddenly he froze. “Wait.”

“What?”
“What day does the department newsletter come out?”
“It came out last week.”
“Oh shit….”
“I don’t like that look on your face…”
“I asked the editor to put in a line about my article and the date when the magazine would be in the mag-stands.”

“You think anyone will buy it?”

“I don’t know, but Valera said she’ll frame it and hang it to the locker-room.”
“She’ll probably do it.” Ryan grinned.

“It gets worse…” Eric groaned. “My mom said she would buy the mag the first day it’s out.”
