Author's Note: This story starts the night that Noah finds Luke in Olde Towne and takes him home. It picks up right after Noah leaves. In my head, that makes Luke 19 and Reid 30,(using the DVD of Reid around 12 yrs old as being taped in 1990). This might end up being the dirtiest thing I've ever written. *hides* Huge thank you's to my official beta for this fic, stl29tide, and alissablue for all her EPIC research. :)

Basically, I'm hijacking the Paul/Josie/Dusty plot for my purposes. Don't know who Josie is? If you visit Dusty's Wikipedia page here, you can read up on it. I'm changing mostly just the dates for the plot, so it runs alongside Luke's plot line. I will probably AU it a lot. Also, in my fic, Dusty/Josie have known each other for a few weeks, and it was Paul's idea to call in Reid (He told Dusty that it was prove Josie was faking, but in reality he wants Reid to keep his scheme going).

Sorry this is so late today, you guys. I had to take my son trick or treating, and then I had dinner at a friends. :D And now we turn from Halloween to New Year's....

Luke walked into his house to find his grandmother and Brian in the middle of an argument. Feeling awkward, he tried not to overhear (which was hard, as Lucinda Walsh did not take affront quietly), and looked over at the flowers Brian had said had been delivered for him.

A small smiled played at the corner of his lips as he examined the bouquet in the vase, leaning over to smell them. It was such a Noah thing to do. He glanced at the card, seeing it was an envelope that read ‘Do not open until 2009’.

He debated opening it, but put it back down on the table next to the flowers as his grandmother stormed out of the room.

Luke sighed as he turned to look at Brian.

Reid walked into Metro, dreading the night to come. He didn’t have any reason to celebrate the new year. Luke was still with Noah, and any attempts that Reid had made in the last week to talk to him had been rebuffed.

Luke was clearly feeling guilty about what had happened at Christmas.

Reid was taking the hint.

Luke didn’t want him.

He was going to tell Bob in the morning that he would turn the job down, and he would be on the first flight back to Dallas as soon as he could.

Katie was upset that he was leaving, insisting he stay until after the holiday, to have one last night with her and Brad before he left. Paul’s care had been turned over to one of the neurologists on staff at Memorial, so he was ready to pick up and leave as soon as he told Bob the news, something else Katie had insisted could wait until the after the holiday.

He spotted Katie, Brad, Henry and a striking woman sitting a table in the corner. Katie saw him at the same time, and waved him over.

“Reid, you made it!” She chirped, excited.

“You twisted my arm.”

“It only hurt a little, you big baby.” She grinned, gesturing for him to sit down. “You remember Henry.”

“Hank.” Reid said.

“It’s Henry.” Henry snapped, putting his arm around the beautiful woman at his side. “And this is my girlfriend Vienna.”

“Well, there’s no accounting for taste.” Reid said, once the shock had passed. “I’m going to get a beer.”

He walked up to the bar, leaving Henry and Vienna sputtering after him. His path took him directly past Noah, who was watching as Maddie twirled for him, showing off her dress. Reid shook his head. He didn’t get it.

Reid wondered where Luke was, if Noah was here. Did that mean Luke would be joining them?

He ordered his beer, watching as Noah leaned down and kissed Maddie’s cheek, the girl kissing him back before leaving.

Luke ran a hand through his hair, upset as Brian snapped at him and then left the room, hopefully to go upstairs and make up with Lucinda. Luke couldn’t believe that it had come to this. Brian was still insisting he could make Lucinda happy, but his grandmother was not a fan of the “hands off” approach Brian was taking.

He ducked upstairs, glad to avoid meeting his grandmother or Brian and changed his clothes. Luke glanced in the mirror, arranging his hair, and tried to focus on the night come.

Anything to keep his mind off Reid and what had happened at Christmas. Noah had been so concerned that Luke might have gotten hurt, even offering to help Luke “change” his clothes. Luke had never felt so horrible in his life. He’d cheated on Noah, something he’d sworn he’d never do.

He didn’t want to be like his parents, but suddenly he understood them so well.

Luke had been avoiding Reid all week. He didn’t want to talk about it, didn’t want to think about it. Reid was leaving soon, and it was over between them. He’d refused to answer any of Reid’s calls, and the one time they’d run into each other at the hospital (Luke had gone to get his test results - thankfully normal), he’d turned and headed the other way without a word.

It was a fluke. Just a fluke.

So why did Luke feel like he was lying to himself?

“So have you given any more thought to Bob’s offer?” Brad asked, leaning back in his chair, his arm around Katie’s shoulders. Henry and Vienna were feeding each other little bites of food from their plates and generally making Reid ill, so he was trying to ignore them. Unfortunately, Brad’s question had gotten Henry’s attention.

“What offer?”

“Bob wants Reid to be the new head of the neurology department.” Katie answered.

“You mean you’d be staying in Oakdale?”

“Are you an idiot?” Reid asked him.

“I’m not going to answer that.”

“Well, that just opens us up to hours of speculation, doesn’t it’?” He paused and then glanced at Brad. “I’m going to turn it down, and get the hell out of Podunk as fast as I can.”

“I’m going to miss you.” Katie said, her eyes looking a little misty.

Oh, hell.

“Holy co-dependency!” Reid exclaimed with a laugh. “You really don’t want me to go, do you?”

“You’re my friend, Reid. I think you could be really happy here.” She put a hand on his arm. A new song came on and Vienna pulled Henry up to dance.

“I’m going to get another beer. You guys want anything?” Brad asked, standing up. Katie and Reid shook their heads, and he headed for the bar.

“Have you heard from Luke?”

“Nope.” He stared down at his empty plate, having eaten everything on it well before anyone else had finished.

“You just need to…”

“I’m done trying, Katie.” Reid told her. “Luke’s made it pretty clear he doesn’t want to talk to me.” He said. “He’s happy with Noah, and I’m sure they’ll be together for many years to come. They’re like the gay Bob and Kim.”

“Oh, Reid.” She looked sad.

“It is what it is, Katie.” He sighed. “It’s just better for everyone if I leave Oakdale and never look back.”

Luke was just slipping his coat on when Jade walked in the front door.

“Hey.” He greeted her. “Why don’t you come with me and Noah tonight?”

“It’s your big night, Luke. I don’t want to play third wheel.” She replied. “Besides, I’m not dressed to go out.”

“You are not a third wheel. And you never know, you might find some hot guy to kiss at midnight.”

“Are you sure?”

“Completely.” Luke told her. “Go get ready. I’ll wait here.” She let out a little shriek of excitement.

“Give me ten minutes.” Jade dashed out of the living room, and Luke smiled. He wandered over to the flowers Noah had sent, smelling them again, and running his hand over the card.

He hoped tonight went as planned…that he and Noah would…they would finally be together.
