Author's Note: This story starts the night that Noah finds Luke in Olde Towne and takes him home. It picks up right after Noah leaves. In my head, that makes Luke 19 and Reid 30,(using the DVD of Reid around 12 yrs old as being taped in 1990). This might end up being the dirtiest thing I've ever written. *hides* Huge thank you's to my official beta for this fic, stl29tide, and alissablue for all her EPIC research. :)

Basically, I'm hijacking the Paul/Josie/Dusty plot for my purposes. Don't know who Josie is? If you visit Dusty's Wikipedia page here, you can read up on it. I'm changing mostly just the dates for the plot, so it runs alongside Luke's plot line. I will probably AU it a lot. Also, in my fic, Dusty/Josie have known each other for a few weeks, and it was Paul's idea to call in Reid (He told Dusty that it was prove Josie was faking, but in reality he wants Reid to keep his scheme going).

No NOAH anywhere in sight. :D

“I do not.” Luke said to Jade as they went inside.

“Ok, that might be a little extreme, but you don’t look as over the moon as I thought you would be.”

“I saw Reid today.”

“Oh, really?” Jade raised her eyebrows, clearly surprised at the direction the conversation had taken.

“And he saw me kissing Noah.”

“Ouch.”

“It didn’t seem to faze him at all.” Luke said, staring at his hands. He slipped his coat off and threw it on the chair, slumping down on the couch. He wasn’t sure why Reid’s lack of reaction was bothering him. “It was like it was just another day at the office.”

“That’s cold.” Jade agreed, sitting down next to him.

“But that’s kind of how he is.” Luke tried to explain. He’d only known Reid a few weeks and he knew that much about him. “I don’t know if it’s because he’s a doctor or if it’s because he’s older…” He trailed off.

“Or because he’s ass?”

“Jade.”

“Why are you defending him?”

“You don’t get it.”

“Explain it to me.” Luke’s phone rang, interrupting them and he dug it out of his pocket with an apologetic glance.

“It’s my dad.” Luke answered the phone and spoke to his dad quickly before hanging up.

He got up and grabbed his coat startling Jade.

“What’s going on?”

“My dad’s at the hospital with Aunt Meg.” Luke said, putting his coat back on. “Paul’s been shot.”

*

Luke walked briskly through the hospital hallway, looking for his dad. He heard a sudden keening wail as he rounded the corner and saw his dad holding onto his Aunt Meg as she sank to the floor.

This is bad.

He headed for them, startled to see Reid standing near by. Luke met his dad’s gaze as he held a sobbing Meg, and approached Reid.

“What the hell happened?”

“Dusty Donovan took your advice.” Reid said, closing what Luke assumed was Paul’s chart and meeting his gaze. “He found Paul.”

Luke ran a hand through his hair as his stomach dropped.

“I didn’t mean for…”

“No one ever does.” Reid said. Luke couldn’t tell from his tone whether he was actually blaming Luke for what happened. Reid glanced over at his dad and aunt, before gesturing for Luke to follow him. Luke indicated to his dad that he was going to follow Reid, and let the older man lead him in an exam room.

“It’s bad, isn’t it?” Luke asked once Reid had shut the door.

“Paul’s in a coma.”

“Fuck.” Luke sat down on the exam table, guilt churning in his gut. The urge to drink surged inside him, and he forced it back. He promised Reid, whatever they were to each other, and he intended to keep it. Noah wouldn’t be too thrilled about it either.

“Luke?” Reid got his attention, speaking quietly. “It’s not your fault.”

“If you say so.” Luke replied, his tone bitter and angry.

“I do say so.” Reid sat down next to him, and Luke stiffened, surprised that he would sit so close. “Paul was playing a dangerous game and it backfired.”

“Literally.” Luke added, staring at his shoes. They sat quietly for a moment, and Luke resisted the urge to take Reid’s hand.

Reid wasn’t his, not anymore, if he ever was. He couldn’t just touch him, even just to feel better.

“Your eye looks bad.” Reid snorted and then grimaced.

“It’ll heal.” He said, his voice quiet. Luke nodded.

“I shouldn’t have gotten in Dusty’s face.” He lamented. “I know you didn’t want him to know, but I just couldn’t stand there and let him…”

“What’s done is done, Luke. We can’t change it now.”

“I guess this means you’ll be going back to Dallas now that the truth is out.”

“Not right away.” Reid answered, and Luke glanced at him. Reid was staring at the wall. “There’s some legal stuff to be cleared up, but after that...”

Luke nodded, his chest aching at Reid’s words. He knew this was coming, and he didn’t understand why it was bothering him so much.

It was just hard to picture Oakdale without Reid.

It was hard to picture his life without Reid. Reid had turned his world upside down, and taught him so many things - not just about sex - but about himself, in such a short amount of time.

He forced those thoughts away and got up, leaving the exam room with out another word.

*

Reid made his way down to the locker room to change, his mind filled with Luke. The blond’s anguished face during their conversation wouldn’t leave him.

Reid sighed, pushing the door to the locker room open, and sighing again as he caught sight of Dr. Hughes hanging up his lab coat.

“Dr. Oliver.” Bob greeted, turning to see him standing there.

“Dr. Hughes.” He said, moving to take of his lab coat and pull his scrub shirt off over his head, replacing it with a black sweater.

“I heard about Paul Ryan.” Bob continued.

“Good news travels fast.”

“I’ve also heard the rumors about what happened to him, and how he got you to come to town.” Reid froze, bent over to retie his shoe.

“And?”

“And my point is that this hospital could use a doctor like you.”

“What?” Reid turned around at stared at him in shock. Maybe Bob really was going senile.

“The surgery you performed on Paul was risky, a one of a kind operation.” Bob said. “We need those kinds of doctors here at Memorial. We’re prepared to offer you a good contract.”

“Even though…” Reid trailed off, referring to the mess with Paul.

“Even though.” Bob confirmed, not letting Reid finish his sentence. “Take the next week to think it over and let me know by the first of the year.” Bob patted Reid’s shoulder in a very fatherly manner and Reid found he almost didn’t mind.

Stay? In Oakdale? A month ago he wouldn’t have even considered it.

And then Luke happened.

*

When Reid got home, Katie was waiting for him, half asleep on his couch.

“What are you still doing here?” He asked her.

“Waiting for you.” She mumbled. “I wanted to make sure you were okay.”

“I’m fine.” He said, sitting down next to her. “Thanks.”

“Aww, Reid.” Katie smiled, tapping his arm lightly. “That might be the nicest thing you ever said to me.” He couldn’t help but chuckle.

“You should go home.” He told her.

“We aren’t done talking.”

“Are you really bringing Luke up now?”

“You better believe it.” Katie answered. “You told me you love him. That’s huge.”

“That’s not…exactly what I said.”

“You need to tell Luke how you feel.” Reid looked at her like she was crazy.

“He’s with Noah, Katie. He’s told me several times that he loves him.”

“And yet he had sex with you, more than once I’m assuming.”

“Katie.”

“I know Luke, Reid. Once maybe might have been a mistake. But multiple times? Not Luke. Not unless feelings are involved.”

Why does everyone keep saying that?

“Can you drop this please? Luke is with Noah, and he and I are over.” She sighed, glaring at him. Desperate to change the subject, he blurted out the first thing he thought of. “Bob Hughes offered me a job.”

Katie let out a squeal, leaning forward and throwing her arms around him.

“That’s fantastic.”

“I didn’t say yes.” She pulled back, frowning.

“You turned it down?”

“I told him I’d think about it.”

“That’s not a no.”

“It’s not a yes, either.”

“Katie.”

“Stop saying my name like that. I’m going to start thinking that you don’t like me.” She kissed him on cheek and got up, putting her coat on. “I better go.” She gave him one last glance as she headed for the door.

“You’ve got some decisions to make.”
