24 Author's Note: This story starts the night that Noah finds Luke in Olde Towne and takes him home. It picks up right after Noah leaves. In my head, that makes Luke 19 and Reid 30,(using the DVD of Reid around 12 yrs old as being taped in 1990). This might end up being the dirtiest thing I've ever written. *hides* Huge thank you's to my official beta for this fic,
stl29tide, and
alissablue for all her EPIC research. :)
Basically, I'm hijacking the Paul/Josie/Dusty plot for my purposes. Don't know who Josie is? If you visit Dusty's Wikipedia page
here, you can read up on it. I'm changing mostly just the dates for the plot, so it runs alongside Luke's plot line. I will probably AU it a lot. Also, in my fic, Dusty/Josie have known each other for a few weeks, and it was Paul's idea to call in Reid (He told Dusty that it was prove Josie was faking, but in reality he wants Reid to keep his scheme going).
Heh, bachelor party fun...
Luke walked into Yo’s and glanced around.
“Luke!” His dad called, and Luke made his way around to the pool tables where his dad was standing. “Glad you came.” Holden smiled at him. He forced a smile back.
“Anything for Jack.” Luke said. He sighed, glancing around. He didn’t see Noah anywhere, and wondered if he was still going to come. He tried not to think about what happened the last time he was here as he eyes trailed over the door in the back of the bar, the one that led to the alley.
*
Reid hesitated outside of Yo’s debating about whether or not to go inside. Memories of the night with Luke washed over him, and he knew that the younger man was supposed coming tonight. He sighed, wondering yet again how Katie had managed to talk him into doing something he didn’t want to do.
He almost turned around and went home…and then he saw Brian heading inside. Reid’s feet were moving before he’d really decided, walking up alongside Brian.
“Brian.” Reid said, getting his attention.
“Oh, Dr. Oliver.” Brian replied, pausing and turning around. “So you got wrapped up into coming too.”
“I did.” Reid agreed. “There’s something I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Okay.” Brian sounded cautious now.
You should be, you son of a bitch.
He was going to take care of Luke’s problems with Brian once and for all, if he had anything to say about it.
“I know what you’re doing to Luke.” Reid’s pleasant expression transformed into a glare. “And it stops now.”
“I beg your pardon?” Brian gasped out.
“You’re a smart guy, Brian.” Reid continued. “You know exactly what I’m talking about.”
“Really, I don’t…” Brian sputtered.
“I have eyes. I see how you are with him, even if no one else - including your wife - does.” Brian’s eyes were wide now.
“What do you want from me?”
“Just leave Luke alone. He has enough to deal with.” Reid turned to walk away when Brian called after him.
“Why do you care about Luke anyway?”
Reid kept walking, disappearing inside the bar.
*
Luke took his soda from the bartender and took a sip.
“That better be soda.” He heard Reid’s voice behind him. Luke closed his eyes for a second, steeling himself, before he turned around.
“It is.” Luke replied. “The only promises I break are the ones I make with myself.”
“Keep it that way.” Reid said, stepping around him and ordering a beer.
“I thought you didn’t care.” Luke moved so that he could see Reid’s face. Reid didn’t say anything for a moment.
“You made a promise.” He finally spoke. “I expect you to keep it.”
With that, he picked up his beer and walked over towards the pool tables. Luke watched as his father greeted Reid and bit his lip. Brian walked by him, headed for the bar.
“Brian?” Luke said his name. Brian glanced at him. “What are you doing here?”
“Your father invited me.”
“Great.” Luke replied, his voice laced with false cheerfulness.
“Have you been spreading lies about me, Luke?” Brian accused after he’d ordered a scotch from the bartender.
“What?”
“I had a little talk with Dr. Oliver outside.” Brian went out, pausing to down his drink in one gulp. “Another.” He told the bartender before turning back to Luke. “He seems to think that I’ve been coming on to you.” Luke didn’t say anything, just glared at Brian. “Where would he get an idea like that?”
“I don’t know, Brian.” Luke snapped. “Maybe because it’s true.”
“I told you, you don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“What ever.” Luke shrugged. “I can’t deal with you right now.” He wandered over to where his father was, trying not to look at Reid.
This night just needed to be over already.
*
It didn’t take long for Brad and Henry to drag Jack into the bar, Jack looking confused until Brad spelled out that it was his bachelor party.
They all gathered around Jack, introductions being made.
Reid sighed, wishing he’d never come.
Luke looked practically edible, and almost happy, and it was novel to see that expression when he wasn’t drunk. He took another glance at him and watched as his face lit up. Reid followed his gaze.
Fuck.
Noah had arrived.
Just fucking great.
*
“You came.” Luke said, giving Noah a smile.
“Thought I should be here for Jack.” Noah replied, glancing at the glass of soda in Luke’s hand.
“It’s straight soda, I promise.” Luke told him, knowing what he was thinking. “I’m done drinking.”
“I’ve heard that before.”
“I mean it this time.”
They were interrupted then, by the other men in their group as Brad gave a toast to Jack, torturing his brother with his many marriages. Reid snorted, and Luke gave him a quick glance, smiling. He figured the older man was probably biting his tongue to keep from commenting.
There was lots of laughter, and then they were all raising their glasses to Jack.
*
“So you’re the brilliant neurosurgeon that Bubbles has been going on about.” Henry said, coming to stand next to Reid. Reid nearly choked on his beer.
“Bubbles?”
“My nickname for Katie.”
“Ah.” Reid replied. “That would be me…and I’m not interested.”
“Excuse me?” Henry sounded confused.
“I mean, if that’s your way of trying to pick me up, it’s not going to happen.”
“I am not gay.”
“Could have fooled me.”
“Brad!” Henry exclaimed, grabbing the man’s arm as he passed by them. “Tell Dr. Oliver that I’m not gay.”
“He’s not gay.” Reid smirked, and Brad shot him a grin.
“I stand corrected.”
“Your damn right you do.” Henry snapped. “I’m not gay, I’ve never been gay. I'm in a relationship with a beautiful Swedish woman. And! I’ve been married and divorced, thank you very much.”
“To a woman?” Reid asked, riling him up further. Brad snorted into his beer glass, in mid drink.
“Yes, to a woman. Katie, in fact.”
“Well, if there was any woman to go straight for, it’s Katie.”
“Okay, that’s not funny.” Now Brad was frowning.
“I’m pretty sure it was.”
*
The expression on Jack’s face when he realized that Brad and Henry had gotten him a stripper was priceless. Luke let out his first genuine laugh in weeks.
And then Brian, who’d clearly had too many, went a little crazy. Luke watched as the stripper danced for him, while Brian made lewd and suggestive comments and generally overcompensated for the fact that he was not as interested in the stripper as he should be.
Luke sighed, the fun going out of the party for him. He felt Reid’s eyes on him, and decided to ignore him. He searched for Noah, and spotted him playing pool.
With another sigh, Luke walked over to talk to him.
*
Reid watched as Luke went to talk to Noah. Luke put his hand on Noah’s arm, and they smiled for a minute. Then Luke gestured towards Brian and the spectacle he was making of himself. Reid wasn’t sure who the little display was for - Luke or himself. Noah’s smile fell away, and Reid felt momentarily satisfied.
Noah and Luke would not be reuniting tonight, a thought that made Reid really, really happy. Happier than it ought to.
He took a long drink of his beer. He didn’t want to feel this way.
Reid kept watching as Noah practically stormed out and Luke looked after him sadly before walking over to the bar. Brian was now slumped down on a bar stool, still drinking. Luke picked up a beer from the bar and Reid’s heart skipped a beat.
No.
He moved, ready to stop him, but Luke just set the beer aside and sat down next to Brian. Reid held himself still as they talked quietly.
Reid hoped Brian wasn’t too drunk to remember what he’d said.
A confused look crossed his face as Luke and Brian got up from their seats, and Luke followed Brian out of the bar.
Fuck.
