26 Author's Note: This story starts the night that Noah finds Luke in Olde Towne and takes him home. It picks up right after Noah leaves. In my head, that makes Luke 19 and Reid 30,(using the DVD of Reid around 12 yrs old as being taped in 1990). This might end up being the dirtiest thing I've ever written. *hides* Huge thank you's to my official beta for this fic,
stl29tide, and
alissablue for all her EPIC research. :)
Basically, I'm hijacking the Paul/Josie/Dusty plot for my purposes. Don't know who Josie is? If you visit Dusty's Wikipedia page
here, you can read up on it. I'm changing mostly just the dates for the plot, so it runs alongside Luke's plot line. I will probably AU it a lot. Also, in my fic, Dusty/Josie have known each other for a few weeks, and it was Paul's idea to call in Reid (He told Dusty that it was prove Josie was faking, but in reality he wants Reid to keep his scheme going).
This chapter's kind of filler...I might post another one tonight...
Luke walked with Jade down one of the hallways at Memorial.
“Thanks for coming with me.” Luke told her. “I just couldn’t tell Mom or Dad that I was worried about my kidney.” He tried to smile, but his lip trembled. He wondered if she could see the fear he was fighting back.
Luke knew that the tests he was having done would be able to determine if he had a kidney infection, if he would need to be re-admitted to the hospital for treatment…if he would eventually need another kidney.
“It’s better to be safe than sorry, Luke.” She said.
“I know.” He replied. “It shouldn’t take too long; my doctor said he just wanted to draw some blood to run some tests.” Jade nodded.
“I’ll be here when you’re done.”
Luke disappeared into an exam room, and Jade saw Reid walking down the hall in her general direction. He hadn’t seen her, as he was reading a patient’s chart. She stepped into his path.
“Hello, Dr. Oliver.” She said. He stopped and glanced at her.
“Ms. Taylor.” He replied, moving to walk around her. Jade stepped in front of him a second time. “Can I help you?” He snapped.
“You’re being a real shit to Luke, you know.”
“What are you, his mother?” She rolled her eyes.
“Don’t be an ass.” Jade told him. He stared at her. “What? Not used to people standing up to you?”
“Maybe one person.” Reid’s lips twitched, and Jade thought he might smile for a second, but then it was gone. “What’s between me and Luke is no one’s business but mine and Luke’s.”
“Until you treat him like dirt. That makes it my business.”
“I don’t owe you any explanations.”
“I’m not holding my breath.” Jade paused. “Luke loves with his whole heart.”
“What’s your point?”
“This thing between you two - it may have started off a drunken one-night stand - a mistake - but it continued because he let it.”
“And?”
“And that means he cares about you, Dr. Oliver. Probably more than he can admit to himself.”
Something flashed in Reid’s eyes and Jade smiled.
“If you’ll excuse me, Ms. Taylor. I have a patient.”
Luke walked out of the room just as Reid disappeared around the corner.
“What are you so happy about?” He asked, rolling down his sleeve.
“Nothing.” She took his arm. “Let’s go.”

Reid made his way through the double doors to the neurology dept of the hospital and sighed. Luckily, he’d only run into Jade. He couldn’t imagine facing Luke after the phone call the other night.
He didn’t know what he would have done had Luke not answered the phone.
Reid didn’t want to think about what Brian may have tried.
He dropped the patient chart down at the nurse’s station, giving instructions to the nurse before turning to head down the hall to the room they’d given him as his temporary office.
He stepped inside and paused. His office wasn’t empty.
“Mr. Donovan, we don’t have an appointment.” Reid said, shutting the door and moving to sit behind his desk. Dusty’s expression remained unchanged.
“I know.” He replied. “I’m worried about Josie, and I wanted to see what you can tell me about her condition.”
“I can’t tell you anything without her express written consent, Mr. Donovan.” Reid rolled his eyes. “It’s called doctor-patient confidentiality. Surely you’ve heard of it.”
“She’s been acting differently the last couple of days, and I wanted to know if there might a medical reason why.”
“Other than her amnesia, the trauma to her brain seems to be healing nicely. I’m not concerned.” Reid told him. “And I’ve already said more than I should, so I’m going to have to ask you to leave, unless you want to make an appointment for yourself.”
“Fine.” Dusty stood up and headed for the door.
Reid watched him go - hating the scheme he was a part of, hating this town, hating Paul fucking Ryan.
