Rainbow's Freedom Series (Superman/Batman)
I decided it was time to get back to my long series writing. I've written novels in zine form and long series on-line, but hadn't really attempted that yet in DC fandom.
I chose to tackle a subject that has long fascinated me, issues of freedom and slavery. I've written on that subject in another fandom but that was set in a primitive, warrior-like world in which slavery would be pretty much expected. This time I chose to write it in a different setting: what if a technologically-advanced society (in this case, Earth of the 23rd Century) practiced slavery? What if it was just a routine, mundane part of life? What kind of society would simply accept such a state of affairs? What would their history be like? Would there be an abolitionist movement? How would Earth fit into a Galactic Empire in a perpetual state of Cold War? And how would superheroes fit in?
On a more intimate level, how would the owned and the owner navigate through codes of honor and obedience, and could love flourish? Would the owner be as enslaved as the owned? Would the characters grow and learn, questioning old assumptions and facing new truth?
I chose to frame these questions around a central theme of a complex relationship between Bruce and Clark, as I deemed their strength of character could survive such a world. The series will range from drama to angst to romance with some humor sprinkled in. Some original characters and a whole lotta DC characters will make appearances (yes, you *know* Dick will appear at some point! ;) ). I wanted to dust off and polish my skills of foreshadowing, plotting, and AU creation while keeping Bruce and Clark the focal point of the whole enterprise.
