THAT SPECIAL LOVE

Jonathan and Martha watched as the old truck bounced down the road.

“Like old times,” Jonathan said as he pushed the swing with his foot on the porch.

“Mmm.” Martha watched the truck until it disappeared from sight. “I can’t believe we’ve gotten our boy back.”

“I know.” Jonathan grasped her hand and squeezed it. “I never gave up hope, but sometimes it was hard.”

“Me, too.” Martha sighed. “And to think he was here on Earth most of the time! And we were in the Manor, with Clark right down the hall!”

“Yeah, didn’t Bruce say he was sick?”

Martha nodded. “I hope it wasn’t too bad, but I’m sure he was well taken care of.”

Jonathan sighed. “I wish we’d found out then.”

“Maybe it was better this way. Clark didn’t have his memory then. He would have been terribly upset and confused.”

“True, but we could have been a trigger for his memory despite that drug he was given.”

“We’ll never know, but I’d like to think we could have.” Martha smiled at her husband and rested her head on his shoulder as he put his arm around her.

“Do you think he’ll stay, re-connect with his roots?” Jonathan asked.

“I don’t know.” Martha watched a robin fly from one tree to another. “He was leaving to start his new life before, and he has a new one now.”

“As a slave,” Jonathan growled. “I hate seeing that collar and manacles on him.”

“Me, too.” Martha rubbed her eyes. “But he’ll have to continue wearing them if he stays with Bruce.”

“With his powers back, he shouldn’t need to play slave.”

“Yes, but technically, he still is Bruce’s slave.”

Jonathan muttered, “Is it the petition thing?”

“Yes. Since Clark is non-Human, he can be freed, but his Master has to petition the proper planetary authority for permission to free Clark. Since there is no more Krypton, there’s no Kryptonian authority to petition.”

“But he’s passed as Human. A freeborn Human sold into slavery can be freed.”

“Too risky. The Government would get involved, probably with a physical, and if Clark’s true heritage comes out…”

“…he’ll be subject to the Hunt Decree.”

They both sighed.

After several minutes of silence, Martha said, “We have to trust our boy’s instincts about Bruce. He’s in love with him.”

Jonathan stared up at the clouds in the sky: fat and fluffy, perfect for an autumn day.

“How can he fall in love with a man who literally owns him?”

“We’ve read the case histories. It’s not socially acceptable, but there are Masters and Mistresses who fall in love with their slaves, and vice versa.”

“I know.” Jonathan rubbed the bridge of his nose. “I guess I should be happy that Clark as found someone to love. It’s just…”

“Yes.” Martha sighed.

Their gazes traveled down the dusty road.
