The sky twinkles,
Star-dusted,
As blue turns to
Violet
And deepens
As day turns to
Night.

STAR-DUSTED

Leaves fell as the weather grew colder. Dick enjoyed running free on the farm, delighted at the variety of faces the pumpkins sported on the porch and lining the walk. The smaller pumpkins were placed in the windows with candles to transform into eerie Jack O’Lanterns.

Alfred was exchanging recipes with Martha and everyone else were the beneficiaries as they held cook-offs and bake-offs.

Clark, of course, was soaking up every minute. He was remembering more every day, and even went into Smallville, though only in the wee hours of the morning and too quickly to be caught on any security cameras.

“Good to see Mr. Hawkins still running the general store,” Clark said to his parents after his visit.

“Lana’s got shares in The Talon,” Martha said. “When she went to Washington she sold the coffeehouse to Pete, who is doing a great job.”

“I wish I could see him.”

“Well, dear, if you decide to be Clark Kent again, you can.” Martha patted his hand.

Bruce enjoyed seeing Clark in the home he had grown up in, happy to see the joy in Clark’s eyes. He liked the fresh country air and Martha’s cooking (though he stayed loyal to Alfred, as they were a tie in his eyes) but kept tabs on Gotham. Through a special communicator, he kept in touch with Batwoman, who could also call him. So far all was well, but Bruce knew he would have to get back soon. He was just reluctant to pull Clark away from the farm and parents that he had just re-discovered.

& & & & & &

Clark and Bruce lay snuggled in Clark’s bed one evening, gazing out at the stars. The views were great back at Wayne Manor, but the stars somehow seemed more plentiful here.

“I wonder if we can see Jovara from here,” Clark said dreamily.

“Maybe.” Bruce watched as the stars twinkled. “Everything looks fresher here.”

“You’d be right, it does.” Clark snuggled close. “Everything is always clearer here.”

Bruce felt a prick of unease but continued gazing at the sky, Clark’s body warm against him. He tightened his hold a little more.

“You’re happy here.”

“Oh, yes.”

Bruce watched a pinpoint of light arc across the sky, probably a plane or shuttle heading out of Earth’s atmosphere. He rubbed Clark’s back as his lover sighted happily.

& & & & & &

Crisp days made everyone feel hale and hearty. One of the best times of day for Bruce was dusk. He liked to sit on the porch swing and watch the violet of dusk deepen to the indigo of twilight as the stars came out, dusting the sky. He liked the peace of approaching evening, especially since he had no patrol.

He did miss the action, and regretted that he had an announcement to make. Clark came outside and joined him on the swing while his parents and Dick sat the kitchen table inside playing cards.

Clark joined Bruce in silence. He seemed outwardly content but Bruce could read tiny telltale signs of nervousness. That was fine, since he was feeling a little nervous himself. He pushed the swing a little harder with his foot.

For several moments they watched the darkness descend, the silence mostly comfortable between them. Bruce reveled in the stillness as much as he could, then he knew that he had to speak.

“Clark.”

“Hmm?”

“I think it’s time to go home.”

Clark stiffened, looking down at his feet. “I know.” He looked up to meet Bruce’s eyes. “But I think I need to stay here.”
