"WELCOME TO GOTHAM..."
Diana sat demurely on the library couch, her legs crossed. Bruce walked in, smiling as he saw her.
“A beautiful morning,” Diana said, sunlight streaming in through the bay windows.
Bruce noticed how the light kissed her skin and highlighted her hair. He could understand what Hal and Steve saw in her.
Though there was something else about her besides her beauty.
“I hope you are having a good time.” He sat down behind his desk.
“Oh, very good. You have a beautiful place here, Bruce.”
“Thank you.” He glanced out the window. “It’s in my blood.”
She nodded. “Once home does, it never leaves us. And if your home is by the sea, it’s even more in your blood.”
Bruce smiled. The bond between them shimmered in the morning light, then Dick entered the room.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I thought the library was empty.” He bowed and started to back out.
“No, stay,” Diana said, holding her hand out.
Dick looked at Bruce, who smiled and nodded. Dick’s face broke into sunshine and he took Diana’s hand, sitting beside her on the couch.
“I gave Mistress Diana a tour of the gardens,” Dick said.
“That’s great. We’re really proud of the gardens here.”
“As well you should.” Diana absently petted Dick’s hair. “Do you have a professional landscaper?”
“They do the work under Alfred’s supervision. He’s got a great eye for beauty.”
Diana looked out the window. “I agree.” She looked back at Bruce. “Dick tells me that there is trick-or-treating in his future.”
Bruce laughed. “Oh, yes. My boy loves costumes, don’t you, Dick?”
Dick grinned. “I guess it’s my circus blood, Master.”
“Ah, yes, the art of theatricality. It is a fine art.” Diana nodded firmly.
“The best!”
Bruce and Diana shared a smile. She said, “Hal and Steve helped me choose a costume for the Harvest Ball.”
“Excellent. It’s one of the biggest social events of the year.”
“I find myself intrigued by this holiday and its Pagan roots.”
“It is a fascinating holiday. Some of the more conservative Christians dislike it."
"Ah, yes. Anything not of their tradition is to be trusted.”
“Pretty much.”
Diana frowned and she looked down at Dick. “When you spoke of the Indians, you said that they had assimilated to some degree?”
Dick nodded. “In the past. Now they’re all herded onto reservations and the Government owns them.”
“All Indians?”
“All Indians.”
“I see.”
“There was a half-Indian paramedic who treated Alfred when he got sick a little while ago! He and his partner Roy were really nice.”
“But I thought you said all Indians were on the reservations. Was his half-heritage a key to freedom?”
Dick shook his head. “Half-Indian means he’s automatically a slave. Johnny is just a rare guy that the Fire Department allows to work for them. He’s proven himself, I’m sure.”
“He has.” Diana and Dick looked at Bruce. “I looked into his unusual background once I learned who had treated Alfred.”
Dick grinned. “Always thorough.”
Diana laughed. She could tell that there was easy banter between these two despite their status differences.
Bruce’s head turned toward the kitchen. “Mmm, I smell fresh pumpkin bread.”
Dick grinned. “That’s my cue to go and get some.”
“You’re very perceptive,” he said dryly.
Dick winked and hopped off the couch, hurrying out of the room, bowing to Diana before he left.
“What a delightful child.” Bruce acknowledged Diana’s statement with a smile. “He is quite intelligent.”
“He is.” Bruce looked toward the kitchen. “A rare ray of sunshine.”
Diana nodded. “I find myself liking that pumpkin flavor.”
“It’s one of my favorites. Alfred will be making pumpkin muffins and pie eventually, too.”
“You rule your castle wisely, Prince Bruce.”
Bruce smiled again. “Thank you.”
“It seems that costumes are important to those who are superheroes. This city has two of the most powerful symbols in Batman and Robin.”
“Symbolism must be important in crimefighting.”
“In any area of life.”
Bruce laughed. “Talking about symbolism, one of my favorite heroes when growing up was Captain America. He was star-spangled symbolism incarnate. And now we have this new heroine, Wonder Woman.”
“She certainly is star-spangled.”
“An interesting choice of costume.” Bruce leaned back in his leather chair.
“She must believe in America and its ideals.”
“She also sounds like an Abolitionist.”
Diana re-crossed her legs. “Does that not fit with the ideals of America?”
“Do you think so?”
“I believe it is at the core of what America is.”
“That’s very generous.” Bruce rested his hand on his leg, smoothing out his pants crease. “But the country practices slavery, just like any other country on Earth.”
“They can remedy that.”
“I hope you’re right. I’d like to see that in our lifetimes.”
“So you do not disapprove of Wonder Woman’s championing of the cause of freedom?”
Diana’s voice was light but her expression harbored shrewdness.
“I welcome it.”
Diana smiled. “You are a wise man.”
“Ah, high praise.”
Which Bruce truly appreciated.

The night was cold as befit an October evening, his cape flowing out behind him.
The Batman watched the revelers below as he and Robin leaped over rooftops. They would meet up with the Arrows at midnight.

Black Canary landed on the roof, closely followed by Speedy. Green Arrow was leaning over the edge of the next roof, a smile on his face. The Canary shook her head.
“G.A. likes the party, huh?” Speedy asked.
She laughed. “He does. Ah, well. It’s one of the things I love about him. Better a partier than a brooder.”
“Wow! Look!”
Black Canary followed Speedy’s pointing finger, her eyes widening.
“Hola!”
The star-spangled Wonder Woman glided along the air currents, landing lightly on the rooftop.
“Hola, Sister!”
“Welcome, Wonder Woman.” The Canary held out her hand and the Amazon shook it. “What brings you to Gotham?”
“I wished to see the celebration.”
“Well, you’ll see plenty of that.”
Laughter floated up from the street below, punctuated by horns and noisemakers. People in gaily-colored costumes roamed the streets as costumed heroes leaped from roof-to-roof.
It seemed the perfect combination.
“Welcome, Wonder Woman,” said Green Arrow as he landed on the roof.
“Thank you. And you are Speedy, correct?”
Speedy nodded, a big grin on his face.
Wonder Woman looked even more impressive in person, the Canary thought. Truly statuesque, she was over six feet tall, her body strong and curvaceous, shown off to good advantage by her glittering costume.
“Gotham is an unusual city.” Wonder Woman looked down at the crowd, hands on her hips.
“That’s for certain.” The Canary put a booted foot on the ledge, her fishnet-clad leg an attractive sight.
Her pulse raced slightly. A woman who claimed to be an Amazon would appreciate female beauty, of that she was certain.
She knew herself, and she knew that she was attracted to women as well as men. This woman was…exciting, exotic…beautiful.
She noticed Green Arrow smiling at her. He knew. Well, that would make things easier.
“You should visit Star City sometime,” she said.
Wonder Woman put her boot next to Black Canary’s. “I would like that.”
The Canary smiled.
“Welcome to Gotham, Wonder Woman.”
Batman and Robin swooped in with a rush of air, capes fluttering out behind them.
Wonder Woman turned. “Thank you, Batman. And this is Robin?” The Boy Wonder smiled and nodded. “I find the All Hallows’ Eve celebration to be of interest.”
Batman strode to the edge of the roof, cape swirling around him. “It is the time of year when Gotham shines best.”
& & & & & &
Wonder Woman observed the dark-clad Bat, power emanating from him even standing still. He was strong, confident, and Gotham’s symbol. Robin was bright and sparkly, his every movement light and blessed. The Batman’s movements were spare and economical, while Robin’s were grace incarnate.
The two of them were an unusual pair.
But the Arrows were just as fascinating. Speedy was a bright, quick boy who flitted around his mentors, while Green Arrow projected supreme confidence, walking with a swagger.
And the Canary?
Her womanly charms were extremely attractive.
A scream from below alerted the heroes. Batman turned to his colleagues as gunmen below hit the streets.
