“Kara!”
Kara grimaced at Val-Kor’s yell. Things were not going well. She ran toward him, his longish brown hair in disarray as he pointed toward the base. The rays of the red sun beat down on them.
“Kan-Zee says the cache is in the circular building.”
“Then that’s where we go.” Her dark-blue cape billowed out behind her in the hot breeze and she pulled her hood lower.
The buildings were methodically laid out in the compound. As she and Val-Kor slipped through the shadows in their hooded cloaks, Kara’s blood sang. This could be a major coup if they could pull it off. Her eyes scanned their surroundings, nodding as Val-Kor silently signaled her. They split up and stealthily approached the target.

Kara was a little nervous at the lack of a security presence. Surely the one in charge of this outpost would know that this was the goal? She gripped her laser pistol tighter and slipped into the cool interior of the duracrete building, listening for any presence at all.
Superpowers sure would come in handy right now.
She heard a noise and tensed, relaxing when she saw Val-Kor. He quickly came to her side. “This way,” he said in a low voice.
They swiftly went down a corridor and reached a room with a huge vault set in one wall. It was a circular door and made of bluesteel.
“Going to be a tough nut to crack,” Val-Kor said.
“We knew that. That’s why we brought the proper tools.” A loud explosion rocked the room, tiny bits of duracrete raining down on their heads. “Those weapons we smuggled are paying off.”
“And will cover our explosion,” Val-Kor said as he quickly and efficiently set the charges.
“Hey!”
Both Rebels turned to see a soldier standing in the doorway, holding a laser rifle.
“The Commander was right. Once our surveillance system was knocked out, he knew something was up.” The soldier aimed his rifle at the Rebels. “Get away from the vault.”
Kara and Val-Kor moved away, their eyes locked on t he soldier. He licked his lips and looked terribly young. Kara’s eyes flickered and Val-Kor’s right hand moved fractionally.
It all happened so fast in the next minute. Kara gasped and crumpled to the floor as the soldier was distracted and Val-Kor threw a smoke bomb. Crying out, the soldier coughed as Val-Kor tackled him.
Kara grabbed the rifle. “Hurry! There will be others to follow.”
Her companion nodded. “Set the charges.”
Kara obeyed, then she ran from the room to join Val-Kor in the hall with their prisoner. They hurried as far from the room as possible, the explosion loud as the building shook.
“Our troops are on the way,” sneered the soldier. His nametag read ‘McKinney’.
“Well see about that,” said Val-Kor. He injected McKinney, who slumped to the floor. “He’ll be out six hours.” He led Kara back to the room, the vault’s door twisted open. They hurried to look inside, smiling at each other.

The atmosphere was grim in the conference room. Outside the windows, rain fell on a dreary day, matching the mood of the men around the table.
“Damnit,” Mario Tortelli said. “We’re under investigation by our own Government, with Jeremiah banned from serving pending the outcome of his trial for slave-smuggling, yet I had to call this meeting.”
Lex could feel Jamie’s apprehension radiating from the chair behind him. The call had come early this morning with a summons to Washington. Something serious was up. Was it war?
Mario blew out a breath. “The Empire’s cache of Green Kryptonite is gone.”
“What?!” Del Crowell exclaimed.
“It’s true.”
“How?” Lex demanded, his mind already racing over the possibilities.
“An attack on Alpha Colony.” Mario took a sip of water from his glass.
“So the attackers took all the Green K? Why was it all in one place?”
Del shrugged. “Why were all the planes lined up wingtip-to-wingtip at Hickam Field the day Pearl Harbor was bombed?”
Mario grimaced. “Other holding places had been compromised and so all the Green Kryptonite was sent to Alpha Colony for re-distribution.”
“Brilliant,” growled Elmer Juneau.
“Yeah, not a great plan.”
“So who attacked? And how did the previous sites get compromised?” Lex asked.
Mario sighed. “There are rumors.” At the expectant look of his colleagues he said, “There may be a Rebel movement among Kryptonians.”
Juneau swore while Del and Ron Mc Bride blanched. Lex felt like joining them.
“A Rebellion? Great.” Del shook his head. “Rogue Kryptonians living under a Hunt Decree gathering together as Rebels, and now stealing the one thing that can bring them down when they use their powers!”
“Yeah, someone wasn’t too bright,” said Ron with a grimace.
“Do we have any Green K here on Earth?” Lex thought of the test subjects that the Rebels would probably be interested in freeing.
“We have a small amount,” said Juneau. “But not as much as I’d like.”
“Damn,” Del said softly.
Lex silently agreed.
They were all in big trouble.
