A WHITER SHADE OF PALE
It was a bright, moonlit night, rays of silver shining down onto the headstones of St. Angus Cemetery, which bordered the Wayne estate.
Batman hid in the shadows in the branches of a towering oak tree. Once the blackmailer came for the money, he would swoop in. With no signs of a police presence, the blackmailer would make his move.
He had diverted Robin to a stake-out at Briarwood, a stately mansion that had been broken into last week, and there were signs that another break-in would be attempted.
Batman’s muscles were coiled, hoping to catch the blackmailer. It needed to end tonight.
The wind howled through the woods, mournful as the trees bowed down. A light snow began to fall, the flakes swirling around as more gusts blew, Batman’s cape flapping out behind him. His gloved clenched and un-clenched as he thought of what would happen to Dick if his secret ever came out.
He’d kill him first before he let that happen.
The keening sound sang in his Old World blood, the ancient sound reverberating as he waited by the light of the moon for the person who could destroy his family.

Clark silently made his way through the woods, his boots gliding over the snow. Bruce had ordered him to stay in the Cave but he could not sit around with so much at stake. Batman’s presence could be explained by saying that Bruce had called him in, and he could be explained as Bruce’s representative. Slaves often were involved in such unsavory dealings, according to Bruce.
He would not allow anything to happen to Dick. Even though he was just slave, he would find a way.
He carefully hid in a copse of trees several yards away, lifting his night vision goggles to his eyes and scanning the headstones, finding the old oak tree where the drop would take place.
He knew that Batman was out there somewhere.

Robin was bored. He wished that he could talk to Batman, but his mentor had decreed radio silence, so that was out.
A rustling in the trees alerted him, and he crouched forward on the large branch he was perched on.
There!
He swooped down, laughing as the two burglars cried out in surprise. Lights flooded the driveway as Robin punched both men, their guns flying out of their hands. He quickly tied up the two, the security guards rushing over.
“Hey, great work, Boy Wonder.”
“Thanks.”
“We’ll take care of things from here.”
Robin nodded and swung away through the trees on his grapple line.

The bats squeaked high up in the rafters of the Cave, Robin writing his report on the computer. He had ‘flown’ home, and relaxed as he absorbed the familiar atmosphere.
Finishing his report, he showered and dressed in a fluffy yellow robe and sandals and headed upstairs.

Batman gritted his teeth. The blackmailer was not coming.
Why the hell not?

Clark sighed. He had hoped it would be over tonight.
Dick was still in deadly danger.

Carl smiled. Bruce Wayne had left the money, so he really cared. That was useful information.
Wayne was a hostile victim and would set a trap. Caldwell, if he decided to pay, would not even bother with a trap. The information would be too intriguing.
If Caldwell declined to pay, he would hit up Wayne again.
In the meantime, let the Prince squirm.

Dick yawned as he emerged from the grandfather clock. He was looking forward to some of Alfred’s warm chocolate chip cookies and then bed.
First, though, he had to find that report Bruce had on Arkham security. The GCPD website had headlined a disturbance at the asylum tonight. It would be best to head off trouble.
He headed for the study. Bruce kept a copy of the report in his desk.
Dick took the key out of the small decorative tin on the bookshelf. Unlocking the drawer, he started to search for the report.
He saw two pale yellow envelopes. Why was Bruce keeping letters locked away?
Oh, well, none of my business.
He kept searching, one of the letters falling out of the drawer. He bent down to pick it up.
He froze as he read the letter.

Bruce Wayne,
I know that your Squire is a Gypsy.
Further instructions to follow.

Dick felt cold seep through his fingers as the letter fluttered to the floor.
He stood frozen as the mantel clock ticked loudly in the silence, then suddenly burst into movement, clawing at the drawer for the other letter. He read it and bit his lip.
The drop had been tonight. He was sure of it. That was why the splitting up in this neighborhood, the radio silence…
He heard the grandfather clock open in the next room.

“Clark, never disobey me like that again.”
“Bruce…”
“It was dangerous for you to be alone out there!”
“I can’t just sit back here and wait, Bruce. I love Dick, too. He’s in such danger.”
“I know.” The voices grew louder as they got closer. “But I…”
“Please, Bruce. I need to be in on this.”
Bruce sighed. “I know.” The two of them entered the study and Bruce unlocked the drawer, taking out the letter. “The date, time and place were all correct. Why didn’t the blackmailer show up?”
“Maybe he feared a set-up.”
“He couldn’t have made us.”
“I didn’t see anyone around.”
“Neither did I.” Bruce rubbed his eyes. “I don’t know what the next move will be.”
“We’ll have to wait for the blackmailer to contact us again.” Clark crossed his arms. “But until he does, we have to try and be proactive.”
Bruce smiled. “I like your style, ka-tare.”
Clark grinned for a moment, then grew serious. “We should make sure all of our contingency plans are in place. If the truth comes out about Dick, we’ll all have to leave Earth.”
“I’ve got it all set up. We’ll get Dick away and leave ourselves, but it’ll have to be separately. Eventually we can reunite…”
Pain reflected in Clark’s eyes. “If we have to be apart to keep Dick safe, then we will. And we’ll get back together again. I promise that.”
Clark drew Bruce into an embrace and caressed his back as they held each other tightly. When they broke apart, Bruce said, “Let’s go to bed.” They left the study.
Dick emerged from behind the couch, marble-white.
He knew what he had to do.
