BLOOD ON THE SUN
Lex studied the reports on the Kryptonian experiments. With the news about the Alpha Colony raid, he had become skittish.
He rubbed his face, suddenly weary. He didn’t like the idea of a bunch of superpowered Kryptonians running around without any sort of control, like some galactic wild card. Wild cards made him very nervous.
But even all the events of recent days could not compare to the thought running around in his brain: Bruce’s Prize is Kryptonian. Clark is under a Hunt Decree.
“Master?”
Lex looked up, glad to see Jamie standing there. He took his slave’s hand and squeezed.
“What is it, Precious?”
Jamie smiled at the nickname. “Are you all right?”
Lex sighed. “Not exactly.” He cocked his head toward the couch. “Let’s go sit.”
They settled on the comfortable couch, Jamie’s legs tucked up as he leaned into Lex, who put his arm around him. Lex loved the scent of his slave’s strawberry-scented shampoo. He remembered washing all that blond brightness this morning in the shower and smiled.
Jamie rested a hand on his Master’s chest and settled his head there. “The Rebels taking the Kryptonite troubles you.”
“Very much.”
“But not as much as what Clark might be.”
Lex wasn’t surprised at Jamie’s insight. His slave was highly intelligent. Lex not only made sure that the blond had access to all the great literary classics so that he could discuss them with Lex, but he was teaching him certain subjects in science and mathematics, delighted that Jamie was keeping up. He would probably never reach genius level, but he asked intelligent questions and Lex enjoyed their discussions.
Jamie also possessed a slightly disconcerting habit of coming out of left field and delivering a brilliant insight, often without any underpinnings of logic but he was often right.
“You’re right,” Lex sighed.
“Do you think that Bruce knew all along, if Clark is a Kryptonian?”
“No. Otherwise why would he have been so frantic when Caldwell had him?”
“I suppose that could prove that Clark isn’t one, if he couldn’t get away from Caldwell.”
“Except that if it’s true that he had no memory, he wouldn’t remember that he had powers.” Lex stroked Jamie’s hair.
“Because of the serum suppression, and the Rainbow K.”
“That’s right. Clark had the powers to get away but didn’t know it.”
Jamie shivered. “I guess that’s why Bruce was so interested in you proposing that some of the Hunt Decrees be removed from the books.”
“Yes, that’s probably the reason.”
“Except he didn’t specifically request the Decree against the Kryptonians. He mentioned a few others, like the Roma.”
Lex abruptly sat up and dislodged Jamie, who blinked in surprise. He was glad that he always took the precaution of a daily sweep for listening devices in here. What use his father could make of this information, he shuddered to think.
“Lex?”
“He did mention other Decrees, didn’t he?”
“Yes, probably to throw you off.”
“But he mentioned this before Clark was ever kidnapped, so it’s unlikely he knew about Clark’s heritage yet, if he even knows now, or if we’re right about this.”
“So that means he had another reason to want a Hunt Decree taken off the books.” Jamie’s mind quickly processed the Decrees he knew of, and his green eyes widened. “The Roma!” Lex looked at him intently. “That was one of the Decrees he mentioned. Roma are known for many things, but the rumor that persists about them is that they have a way to mask their DNA. Also that many were renowned circus performers.” He and Lex looked at each other with the realization at the exact same moment.
“Dick.” Lex’s throat was dry. “Bruce possibly has two slaves under a Hunt Decree.”
Jamie nodded numbly.
“What’s this about Hunt Decrees, son?”
Lex’s blood froze as Lionel sauntered into the room.
When did he get home, and more importantly, what did he hear?
With the skill of a lifetime of practice, Lex schooled his features into blandness as he faced his father. “Jamie and I were discussing the various Decrees still on the books.” Since Lionel didn’t know about the Rebel raid, as the Empire was keeping it tightly under wraps, he didn’t find it odd that they were discussing Decrees after the robbery.
Lionel smiled at Jamie with a gleam in his brown eyes. Lex squelched his irritation. He knew that his father would like nothing better than to drag Jamie over to the desk, bend him over, and fuck him senseless. Still, he considered it better discretion to let it go. Getting his father in a hostile mood would make it harder to deflect him.
Lex stood, stretching his legs while Jamie remained seated. Lionel took a seat in front of the desk, crossing his legs.
“So, how are we on this fine autumn day?”
“Just fine, Dad.” Lex leaned against the desk, crossing his arms. “What’s up?”
“Who says anything’s up?”
“C’mon, Dad. You’re dying to dish.”
Lionel laughed. “Possibly. All right, word is that the Slave Protection Law will pass through Congress with less of a fight than expected.”
“That’ll make a lot of people happy.”
“Just as many it’ll make unhappy.”
“Well, that’s true.” Lex tapped his chin with his finger. “Looks like Martha Kent and Company have been making inroads.”
“I’m not surprised. Martha is a determined woman.”
“Still got a crush on her?”
Lionel laughed again. “I have great respect and admiration for her, except in her choice of husbands. Imagine choosing a farmer over a billionaire!”
“Well, Dad, love is rarely logical.”
Lionel smiled. “Well said, son.” He slapped his knee. “Love never is.” He looked at Jamie, who was gazing down at his folded hands.
“I suppose Edmund Caldwell is a bit put out.”
Lionel snorted. “A tad.” He ran a hand through his mane, voice slightly distant. “He must be putting his slaves through their paces.”
“You mean because he’s forbidden to be near anyone else’s slaves?”
“Yes.” He picked up a letter opener. “Perhaps it isn’t as bad as it could be, though.”
“How?” Lex asked, thinking that if not for Bruce, his Jamie would be suffering right now in the hands of Edmund Caldwell.
“He’s not allowed to buy new ones, or rent the services from brothels.”
“Why couldn’t his sons just procure slaves for him?”
“They’re not allowed to do so. So if Edmund damages his slaves too much, he can’t replace them.”
“Well, I guess you’re right.”
Lionel stood. “Lunch in ten minutes.”
“We’ll be there.”
Lionel smirked at Jamie’s inclusion but refrained comment as he left the room.
Jamie immediately jumped up and whispered, “Do you think he heard us?”
“You can never be sure with my father, but I’d say no. We have to be more careful, though.”
Jamie nodded, trying to clamp down on his fear for his friends.
“Let’s go to lunch,” Lex said, putting his arm around Jamie’s shoulders as he led them out of the room.
